I think pronouns being attached to voice style is a weird design choice and a valid complaint. Not a reason to drag and demonize the whole game, but it's still a legitimate choice to critique. Why not give us the freedom to be a feminine sounding man or vice versa?

I don't disagree with the reviewer voicing their opinion on the matter, and I am on board with the notion of more diversity and inclusion in games (in a broad sense, but not "forced", or implemented in such a way where "token" characters are wedged in just to check off some boxes), especially in games where you can create a character.

Where I take umbrage is how heavily the review leaned on this one facet of the game, at the expense of reviewing much else outside of that one issue. As a reviewer, your personal biases and preferences are going to be reflected in your review, but it's important to remember your audience and write for them, not for yourself necessarily.

Would've preferred a more straightforward review, with an accompanying opinion article. But I'm sure Polygon's editor will be happy with the clicks and ad revenue this review generates so

Yeah, I don't care one way or the other, maybe it has something to do with how the game is coded, but, that can be patched in.

I mean, all the negative reviews are because it's buggy as shit, but they're playing the pre-release version that doesn't include the 56 GB day one patch.
Early reviews just don't work for games anymore. Day one patches change too much.

Do they though? In my experience when a game gets a lot of criticism for being buggy before launch it remains buggy even after the initial patch. Several cases come to mind where it took weeks for glaring issues to be resolved. I'm having a hard time thinking of any titles that got flak for bugs before launch but played just fine on release day.

Mass Effect Andromeda was one that was just ridiculously buggy at launch but there was a patch at around 2 weeks after launch that fixed most of the problems the game became defined by

A patch two weeks post launch is very different from a day 1 patch and I'd argue that Mass Effect Andromeda is still a buggy mess today. They reworked some of the terrible animations people kept making meme videos of, but barely touched the rest of the issues.
