Outgoing Education Secretery Betsy DeHeifer took a swing at Joe Biden for his education plan which she calls the push for free college as a "SOCIALIST TAKEOVER of higher education" that will damage the nation's economy!!

Though she didn't mention him by name, she railed against politicians who want to cancel federal student debt or to make college free, one of the promises of Bernie Sanders campaign.

She said "Make no mistake: it is socialist takeover of higher education. Now depending on your personal politicis, some of you might not find that notion ass car as i do. But mark my words: no one of you would like the way it will work"

She has long opposed free college and has been accused of undermining federal programs that allow some borrowers to get their loans forgiven

Biden wants to make public colleges and universities free for families earning less than 125,000 a year as his education plan would expand existing loan forgiveness programs and backed proposals to cancel 10,000 in federal student debt for all borrowers as part of a covid-19 relief effort

Devos calls this an "insidious notion of government gift giving"

The Trump admin has pausd payments to the end of December but Devos has not said it will be extended and said free college would put burden on tax payers, especially those who do not pursue college to "pay their bills".

She warns "If the politicians proposing free college today get their way, just watch our colleges and universities begin to resemble a failing K-12 school with the customer service of DMV to boot"

This was a plan adopted by Bernie Sanders and when he asked Devos on that subject, she said "nothing is truly free. Somebody, somewhere pays the bills. And the bill is coming due."

Devos says personal responsibility on bill payments should be upon the student and to have taxpayers pay them is absurd and to pay for "lazy students" who don't want to work to pay off their debt will cause huge deficits

Which is why we used to have trade schools in lieu of high schools. (Well, technically some still exist.) In the case of trades, apprenticeships would work better anyway. The problem is that the government has largely enabled businesses to shift costs that they'd incur themselves onto workers and, in turn, those workers STILL need training anyway so it's mostly just government exploiting the common man yet again.

Certainly for a lot of majors. Many jobs traditionally never required a college degree -- and why would they? -- but as soon as we started handing degrees out like candy based on the early data that people with degrees made more money, every job under the sun now wants a degree.

Suggesting people pay for their own damn shit isn't "suppressing information" and, more importantly, the US government already pays for over a decade of education for everybody when the biggest beneficiary of that system isn't students but instead unions, bureaucrats, and teachers. And the idea that formal education is the only way to gain information is a dangerous ignorance of the highest order, particularly our rigid models for formal education which produce mediocre graduates.

Education is an investment that always pays off for the public. It makes no sense whatsoever to put people who pursue higher education into such hideous debt that they're never able to meaningfully contribute to the economy despite their increased productivity.

The thing is a lot of colleges get government money and still charge ridiculous rates for tuition. At my college they had to get rid of smoking areas about 5 years ago in order to keep getting public funding. At the very least they should minimize tuition, colleges shouldn't be for profit

I hate Devos, but college should not be completely government funded because just about everything government funded sucks complete ass. Plus, college is a complete and utter waste for tons of people in the first place.

Student loan debt should not be forgiven either. Maybe some for people who actually worked hard in school and got a real degree, but taxpayers should never have to pay for someone to spend 8 years partying and getting a useless sociology degree.

Just expand shit like HOPE and PELL. Only give help or forgive debts to people who need it and earn it.

Seems like everyone thinks people only go to college for a liberal arts degree. That seems to be the big talking point among the right who are generally anti-education. Having a liberal arts degree by the way does open a person up to a lot more opportunities for work. The trade schools are great and I think they should be promoted just as much as college degrees, but there is something to say about having a more well rounded education that you get from college.

Betsy DeVos is a nutcase to say the least. Free college isn't that far-fetched. An aunt of mine actually got her college degree in the 1970s in California because back then public universities and colleges in several states offered free college for in state residents.

Prior to that, the G.I. Bill offered free money for returning Vets to attend college after WW2 and the Koran War and many of those guys were blue collar hourly paid workers with no hope of attending college until the G.I. Bill was created so it isn't far fetched and America could do it if it chooses to but we have a certain faction in this country who frown on free college, maternity leave, universal healthcare etc and America is one of the few industrialized countries that does not have these amenities for its citizens and that's what tax dollars are for and I would rather spend tax dollars educating people versus putting them in prison for decades with those costs mounting annually.

With college that's roughly 4 years of costs that will end whereas someone in prison will need to be cared for at tax payer expense until they either get paroled or die.

America right now spend roughly $31,000 per year to house an inmate so magnify that cost with the half million of people incarcerated in America and I think spending that on college is a better return on that money versus keeping someone locked away with no return on the money.
