Oh yeah I've def been doing those, except for the subjob ones. I know I have to hit 30 in Thuma before unlocking Black Mage and subsequent White Mage, and I don't think I have a reason to do any of the other class starting quests or all these dozens of level 1-3 quests in the new area.

I mean more if I should be doing those green circle quests where you activate it yourself (forgot the name, Leves?) or if I should be queuing for stuff.

thaumaturge is to black mage what conjurer is to white mage. so you have to unlock conjurer to get white mage. which is done in gridania.

Yeah if you're queueing as DPS you generally either want to just get people to do it with you from your Free Company if available or do other things while you're waiting lol.

Honestly the queues are better now than they used to be though. ARR/HW queues would be like 30+ minutes for DPS on the regular.

Am I doing something odd here that's causing me to be level 29 and only now hitting the level 20 story mission, or is that par for the course?

Also...is there a reason to make a new character way down the line for my other roles, or does it not really matter other than aesthetics? It doesn't appear to me that there's anything inherently stopping me from making this dragon race into a samurai eventually and just swapping back and forth, though if the different starting zones or races had unique main quests I would want to try those out.

Yeah, speaking of which, I have had ZERO interaction with shops or even my own inventory other than that quest where I had to buy a Hi Potion. I guess I should sell some of this old stuff....but not stuff I may want to make into glamor, I think?

I need to do a deep dive on explanations for these systems. I find it difficult to keep track of this many things going on, but I guess this will help me get better at that in the end.

They did a rework of the leveling so that the main quests give more XP. You'll fall behind twice in the 40s, still, but before there was a lot more grinding.

It's better to play other classes on the same character for the most part since you get more XP.

Making a second character is actively detrimental, since you'd basically have to re-do the entire main quest, unlock everything a second time, etc. You're meant to use only one, really. The only different quests are the ones for the starting cities - there's nothing unique to race.

For stuff you might want to use for glamour, you can put it in the dresser.

First unlock glam at a quest in Vesper Bay. Then obtain some glamour prisms (if you aren't on the trial you can grab some off the market board). Then go to an inn room at any of the adventuring guilds and you can start shoving stuff in the dresser.

I would also suggest holding on to any dungeon drops (green and purple gear) because you will eventually unlock the ability to trade those in for rewards. But it takes a while to work up to so if it's clogging up your inventory just dump em.

Yeah they used to put long-ass cutscenes mid-dungeon for some reason. And as you can see the other players basically ignore them now which leads to that. They stop putting those scenes in once the base game ends

That I def get, it was the only dungeon so far that I was like....this kinda sucks.

So this is a while away, since I know(?) it's best to level your initial class super high before other to increase the experience bonus on the lower class, but what would be the easiest classes to pick up for the other roles once I max out Black Mage and Red Mage? Obviously White Mage is gonna be the highest priority healer to level since I know(?) that ties in to abilities Red Mage can use as well, but for tank, physical DPS, and physical ranged DPS I'm completely undetermined so far.

And now I'm REALLY getting ahead of myself, but how does Red Mage's role get determined in roll queue?

No, all classes only have to level themselves up for their own abilities now. It used to be this way but you might be working on old info. You can level up whatever you're interested in independently.

Also IIRC the exp bonus doesn't care about how high your main job is, just that it's higher, and then applies an even bonus to everything under it. What I would reccomend is to do the story on your main and do your leveling roulette on other classes, and then when your main gets to around 50 or so hopefully you will be able to continue doing the main story quests on a different class. You will approach this somewhat naturally though and I wouldn't worry about it too much.

UshiromiyaEva posted...

It's a pure DPS, with two healing abilities: a (bad) cure and a (good) raise. Same as Summoner. This game is super streamlined for balance purposes, it doesn't actually do hybrid roles.

The cure isn't bad on Red Mage. It's quite potent. It's not really the same as Summoner because Summoner's heal doesn't scale while Red Mage's does, so Summoner's heal actually IS bad. I would compare it more to Paladin's heal.

You just generally don't want to cast it unless things are going to absolute hell because your job is to DPS (or to pre-set up dualcasts when there are no targets, but yeah)

Right, but it's easier to say that's it's bad then throw out all these technically okay with all these qualifications on it because the bottom line is that you should not be approaching Red Mage with the mindset that you are actually supposed to use Vercure for healing. And that's a pretty common misconception!

Gotcha. Been watching a few videos that talked about how useful the instacast was for raise and heal, but I didn't realize those were the only two heal abilities.

Also WOW, so my info about subclasses is totally out of date, huh? There was a whole thing I read in a Reddit post about making sure to get Black Mage and White Mage up to swap between them as a subclass for Red Mage, but IIRC that was a few years old.

I should probably just go do all those class unlock quests now so I can get them out of the way, I suppose. Also didn't know about leveling roulettrle, will need to look into that <_<. I think I saw it once and misread it for Leve roullete.

I strongly advise against picking Gunbreaker for your first tank. I know the allure of starting at level 60 is very strong, but the problem with that is you can skip all the early game low-level dungeons and jump straight into more advanced content where your group members will expect you to know how to tank. If you've never tanked in FF14 before and especially if you've never tanked in an MMO before that's a recipe for headaches all around.

Paladin, Warrior, and Dark Knight are all fine for a first tank (DRK starts at 30 but you still have to go through a good portion of early-game stuff before getting to expansion content). All of them are equally viable and equally "fun" at low levels; pick whichever looks coolest to you.

This warning doesn't apply to other DPS - in general there's much less to learn on DPS than on tank/healer, so skipping early levels really only means you need to spend a few more minutes looking at your tooltips and learning how things fit together. Samurai and Dancer are fine to start with, for example.

Any information you find regarding jobs dated before July 2019 is out of date and does not apply to the current game.

They really need to make people level another tank to 60 before picking up GNB

I just healed Wanderer's Palace (Hard) with a tank I'm pretty certain had never tanked a dungeon before, and let me say that it was super fun having them single target one trash mob per pack and keep the last boss in the same place for the whole fight even after being told what to do differently multiple times

Looking forward to a similar experience with fresh Sages in 6.0...!

Not yet, but I'm already feeling the burn. I haven't even gotten myself into the mental habit of using L2 yet. It doesn't help that all those secondary black mage abilities are very similarly colored silhouettes of front facing dudes <_<

I also need to get used to using the D-pad for targeting enemies, which I haven't been using. I haven't been a healer in a party so not sure, but does up and down swap between ally targeting versus left and right being enemies?

  1. If there's more than 1 enemy, use your AoE.
  2. If you've pulled more than 1 pack, use a defensive cooldown. Reprisal and Arm's Length count as cooldowns.
  3. If someone in the party rips threat on a mob somehow, use Provoke or Tomahawk.
  4. Keep the boss pointed away from the party.
  5. If the boss uses an attack that drops your HP by a lot, use a defensive cooldown the next time they use that attack. (Arm's Length doesn't work in this situation; Reprisal is best combined with something else.)
Congratulations, you now know the basics of how to tank. People play it up in their heads as this big responsibility and really it's the easiest of the three roles to play once you know the basics. Hit the bad guys, make sure they're hitting you and no one else, don't die. Simple.

If you're worried about navigating dungeons, once you hit Heavensward content all the side routes in dungeons disappear and it becomes impossible to get lost. Walk forward, kill enemies, kill boss, repeat until victory fanfare plays.

Also yeah, a quick "Hi I'm new" in party chat when you zone in goes a long way.

Yeah I strongly recommend getting yourself used to the idea of multiple hotbars and using L2. The sooner you start training your muscle memory, the better.

The basic way I do it as a controller player is two hotbars for combat abilities, and a separate hotbar for non-combat commands like Teleport. You can set it up so that you automatically switch between the combat hotbar and the non-combat hotbar by drawing/sheathing your weapon.
