CBS announced today that it will diversify its Reality TV casts to at least 50% black, indigenous and people of colour as WHITE people have dominated in WINNING the shows!!

The pledge was made for future editions of Surivvor, Big Brother, Love Island and The Amazing RAce starting in the 2021-2022 season.

The network has been slammed for casting a mostly white cast as a fan petition urged the network to diversity and inclusitivity for its content after several Survivor and Big Brother contestants spoke out against lack of diversity

George Cheeks, president and ceo of CBS said "The reality tv genre is an area that's especially underrepresented, and needs to be more inclusive across development, casting, production and all phases of storytelling"

Survivor Contestants, Sean Rector and Jolanda Jones formed a group called The Black Survivor Alliance with the goal of bringing light of implicit bias and racism on and off the show and had meetings with executive producer, Jeff Probst on more people of colour.

Black Contestants have longed been typecast on the show and have been known to be targeted early for elimination and are generally the sole minority on the tribe.

This past summer on Big Brother All Stars, all 3 black contestants were targeted early and banded together promising not to target each other...but in the end, all 3 were eliminated early as 2 white male contestants reigned in the end.

Big Brother is known to cast contestants who make racially charged jokes and the use of the n-word in past seasons

In fact, white males have dominated the shows and formed alliances early on which made it harder for minority and female contestants to compete.

Survivor and Big Brother have been accused of favouring white players, particularly males as winners for years as they say execs see them as ratings winners.

While it's a stupid policy and overtly racist, I don't bother with reality tv so I'm largely indifferent. Of course, the real policy test will be how this affects their numbers. If they're stable or improve, it could become an industry trend. If they go down, you can expect CBS to abandon its newfound "wokeness" because the company doesn't have any virtues or values.

Are they doing this as a desperate attempt to regain ratings? They don't give minorities any exposure until the ship is sinking. And when it sinks regardless they'll have scape goat to blame for the bad ratings.

I don't have a problem with it because it's reality tv and not something actually performance based (such as sports, the job market, etc.)

Having a 50% minority minimum in say, sports, is stupid and the best players should start regardless of race

If you have to rig it, the win is tainted and it's an insult to the minorities. It's basically saying "you can't win without the system helping you", which is super condescending.

That said, they can pick contestants however they want. It should be based on quality of the applicants but also reflective of every demo of the audience.

These people never manage to understand the rules of probability.

Everyone is is never going to get a fair slice of the pizza pie unless the population is even as well.

Around 77% of the population is white (includes light-skinned latinos like myself, because I guarantee you they never make that distinction, we are just more white people to them unless we have a distinctly spanish names or features), so probability is with white people just because theres more of them.

Yeah reality TV dosent bother me much cause I feel its scripted anyways but that shit bothers me in real jobs. Saw a hiring ad for a prison from another state and the physical requirements for women where less than a man. I feel if you cant do the job you shouldn't work the job.

The prison I work at is fair in the hiring process but tends to baby the women once hired and it kills me cause the women actually have a easier time making inmates do like they are supposed to just cause when its male on male egos tend to get involved. Inmate at least tries to put on a front with male officers even if hes ultimately gonna do what you say with a female 99% of the time its "yes mam" with no problem.

Id like to know where you get your data because if so that would be a lot more meaningful since sadly old people are kind of irrelevant especially in a a show like Survivor.
Though half are non-white =/= being half black

The problem with any quota system -- racial or otherwise -- is while it may reflect the population at large, it doesn't necessarily reflect the pool of applicants, etc. Then there's the sub-issue of the minority demographics. If you were going for straight representation (as opposed to treating all minorites as one block), you'd have some races who might only appear once every 5 or 10 seasons (thus in some cases you technically have over-representation there as well)

Oh, and speaking of straight representation, has there ever been a gay season of the Bachelor or Bachelorette?

I'm not sure what you are asking for. I showed you the plot and it says where their data came from. If you are asking for raw data, apparently from census.gov.
