Gonna have unmarked spoilers in this topic for Dangronpa 1 and 2, Ultra Despair Girls, and the anime.

I guess this is the follow-up to my previous topic, where I played the first two games and Ultra Despair Girls. Gonna play Danganronpa v3 now, which is confusingly not Danganronpa 3, but is either the third or fourth game, depending on how you view things. I know nothing going in except the Steam banner. I've seen the girl with the pink coat and goggles before in memes, which means she'll either be important despite being buried in the corner of the banner or she'll be pure waifu-bait.

This probably won't be as fast-paced as my previous topic, and it won't be super detailed, just me occasionally posting thoughts about it since people enjoyed the other topic. As before, I'll be posting predictions of who the killer is, etc, so we can all laugh when I'm completely wrong. Please don't post any spoilers from the game past where I'm at, obviously.

Also, I just finished watching the anime, and people might want to hear what I think of it, so briefly:
  • The twist where the killer is a program brainwashing people to commit suicide is good, and the forbidden action bracelets are good, but everything else in the anime is terrible. Like, really bad. This is a 2 or 3 out of 10, I'd say.
  • Changing the formula was a mistake, I think? The heart of this series is the class trials and the characters getting to know each other, then suspecting each other of wacky murders. The actual killing game is just a vehicle for that. I guess you can't have Makoto go into other high school killing game, but maybe that's a sign that this shouldn't have been made at all.
  • I'm still unclear on if the returning D2 cast that "died" in the game retain their memories of the game, or if they're again back to how they were as freshmen.
  • The writers obviously wanted to include every surviving character from the games, so it's comical how small some of their roles are (especially Yasuhiro, whose contribution to the plot consists of kicking a nameless henchman in the stomach).
  • Zero explanation is given for why Aoi had a fake out death with a toy knife. I guess it doesn't matter, but it's such a strange thing to put in there.
  • Translating the characters' titles as "Super High School-level" instead of "Ultimate" is hilarious, I have to assume that was to match lip flaps.
  • The final episode having unnamed bad guys show up with special weapons and powers for no reason except to have miniboss fights against the heroes is so stupid that it's funny.
  • The idea of a guy wanting to stay in the closet so badly that he lets the world be destroyed is... something? I have no idea what they were going for with that.
  • Junko's anime voice actress should be strangled to death.
  • There are obviously a million plot holes and stuff like that, I understand that this isn't the series where small details like that matter, so I can look past all of that. Special commendations to the subplot about the candy girl, knife guy, and medicine girl, three characters who weren't in the games, but who take up like 10% of the anime with a subplot that doesn't matter, affects nothing, and is quickly forgotten. Candy girl in particular has actions that are so insane and so obviously counter to her own survival that I think she deserved to die after a while.
  • The idea that the Tragedy wasn't just a social movement Junko started, but was instead the result of brainwashing is incredibly dumb and counter not only to how the games presented it, but also to the theme of the games. The theme was supposed to be people giving into despair, not literally having their choice stripped away. It's a shockingly bad way to handle the backstory to the games, made worse by the fact that the backstory didn't really need to be told. This is another MGSV situation where the more you explain, the less interesting things become.

I will probably start playing tomorrow, but I wanted to jot down my anime thoughts while they're still fresh.

You are basically correct about everything.

However, Junko getting glee out of making someone mad "cuz she dissed his waifus" is enough to bump the anime up to like a 5/10 for me. Also that very first killing game with the class officers was fucking brutal.

Oh good, you're continuing this. Now I can say something about this

I hereby dedicate the last five posts of this topic to a pure waifu ranking (characterization matters only so far as waifuness, subtracting 'murderer' as a factor):
Chiaki > Sonia > Kyoko > Ibuki > Aoi > Akane > Sayaka > Mahiru > Toko > Peko > Celeste > Mikan > "Junko" > Junko

I like how Sakura is so not a waifu that she doesn't get to be on the list

Not only is it awful, it's also a retcon, and a pointless one with no benefit whatsoever. I think it's the single worst thing in the entire Danganronpa franchise. There are really no words to express how horifically dissapointing this was, other than even outside DR it may be one of my most hated plot revelations in media.

You'd really just be better off reading even mediocre DR fanfic than watching DR3.

I guess I can accept that as a positive, so I'll relent. This is still nowhere near a 5/10 to me, though.

Unless something happens in v3 that's worse, I would agree that it's the worst thing. And I thought Junko needing to create an army of robot bears in UDG was bad!

Oh jeez, I made that list by looking at the Steam banners for the characters and just didn't register Sakura, I guess.

The one thing I liked about Despair Arc was Chiaki's death. They built her up as a likable and innocent character, and they gave her one of the most brutal and unnecessary deaths of the franchise. I'd rank her second for DR2 if we got THAT Chiaki in DR2.

No, "Ultimate" was a localization in the first place. Super High School Level is the literal translation of their title in Japanese, which was THANKFULLY changed to Ultimate in the game localizations.

Junko's anime voice actress should be strangled to death.

Oh my god, what. Junko's voice actress in DR3 is like the one thing I come to DR3 for, lol. It's absolutely incredible to me how she takes a character I find really stupid in the games and makes her fun and lively - she's legit one of my favorite characters in the franchise in DR3 only! Seriously, I just love what they did with her in DR3 where she seems to have... an actually coherent personality and character motivations, as opposed to the games where she just seems like she's doing a schtick the whole time and has no personality of her own.

Anyway, yeah, future arc is fucking terrible, and the brainwashing explanation for DR2 is also fucking terrible. Stuff I liked in DR3:

The forbidden action bracelets (I love how they foreshadow some of the forbidden actions, lots of clever stuff here)
Junko
Chiaki's death
The first killing game
Juzo, kinda
Chisa, kinda

Um, that's it. Everything else is a fucking nightmare, lol.

I like Kyosuke ironically and Chisa unironically. Chiaki and Hajime are real good in the DR2 portion. I also got to agree with DR3 Junko actually being a functional character.

I'm glad people like the forbidden actions. They're good. I also like some of the character designs of some of the future arc characters, mainly the candy girl.

Oh, did you see the version with that line LtM just mentioned? I believe it was taken out of the version on Funimation's website because it was never supposed to be in there in the first place.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNmXq85Tm2Q

It's here in the video at 0:31.

It was a barb by the voice actress at the bullshit the writers pulled with her character, and I guess through some kind of clever ploy, someone there was able to sneak the line in without anyone higher up noticing until it was too late.

I said I'd start tomorrow, but I guess I lied.

- Kaede is surprised to find herself in a classroom that's overgrown with vines. First, I'm a bit surprised we have a female main character, second, the vines imply that the school's been overgrown. I figured out last time that the game is just a simulation, so I guess my new prediction is that this game's plot twist is that it's set in the far future or something.
- Monsters chase me in the halls, oh my god this is so action-packed and exciting that I can't believe it.
- No Monokuma to be seen, but he's on the Steam banner, so I bet he'll show up eventually. Instead we have the Monokubs, or as I will refer to them, the Mono Rangers.
- Rantaro immediately figures out what's going on. Weren't the first two games publicly broadcasted or something? I assume we'll have an explanation for why no one else seems familiar with the killing game or Monokuma-lookalikes.
- Oh man, a magical musical clothing sequence, I can't possibly guess Kaede's ultimate talent.
- Kaede wakes up in the same classroom as before, and has amnesia again, this time not even remembering that she was kidnapped. What's going onnnnn
- HE IS ALL THAT REMAINS OF A ONCE POWERFUL YOKAI, I know I've heard this before, but I genuinely don't remember where.
- A different school than Hope's Peak, sounds like.
- Shuichi's another Ultimate Detective, eh? Huh. I honestly didn't expect any Ultimate talents to get reused besides luck. And I'm the Ultimate Pianist. Gonna be honest, "Ultimate Pianist" sounds harder to integrate into the story than Ultimate Luck or Ultimate Hope, but we'll see.
- "Ultimates are scattered all over, they're difficult to find." Dude, thirty-one out of thirty-two Ultimates so far have been from Japan. Ultimates are the easiest thing in the world to find as long as you're in Japan.
- Man, Kaede is taking this really casually. Only Yasuhiro was less concerned.
- "It makes sense, though, since magic doesn't exist." Kaede, did you not play Ultra Despair Girls? Did you not see the part where a ghost shows up?
- First game had all of the doors and windows bolted, second game was on an island, this game has a giant dome-cage. Alright.

Last time, I gave first impressions of each character and guessed their chances of being evil. I... guess I'm going to do the same thing again? I really wish I had done that for D1's cast.

Kaede Akamatsu: Ultimate Pianist
Obviously our protagonist. Her power is so much less impressive than Makoto's and Hajime's that it makes me wonder if she'll have a plot twist about her identity, but something tells me she won't.
Chance of being a victim: 0%
Chance of being a killer: 0%
Chance of surviving: 100%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 30%

Shuichi Saihara: Ultimate Detective
Extremely suspicious that he reuses a previous Ultimate ability. It's also extremely suspicious that his power kind of renders Kaede's power useless for class trials. This indicates that he might bite the dust early so that she can step up. And yet, his picture gets equal representation as Kaede's on the Steam banner and the Steam trading cards. I am declaring that he has a good chance of secretly being behind everything, or dying in the late game. However, this is an outside chance of a chapter 1 or 2 death and the heavy advertisement of him being a misdirection. I just don't know if these games are clever enough to do that! What I can say for certain is that if he dies, he will definitely not have a midgame death.
Chance of being a victim: 50%
Chance of being a killer: 30%
Chance of surviving: 40%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 40%

Tsumugi Shirogane: Ultimate Cosplayer
Completely fails to stand out in any way. I can imagine her cosplay powers being used in a convoluted murder where she impersonates someone else, though. This character screams early death to me.
Chance of being a victim: 55%
Chance of being a killer: 40%
Chance of surviving: 5%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 30%

K1-B0: Ultimate Robot
This guy gave his entire backstory in the first conversation, which is something that people who die early tend to do. I guess this is also a good time to say that the characters seem a little... wackier? We'll see how things go, but this cast seems at least as wacky as D2's. I said in the first topic that D1's slightly more grounded cast worked better for me.
Chance of being a victim: 60%
Chance of being a killer: 30%
Chance of surviving: 10%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 0%

Kokichi Oma: Ultimate Supreme Leader
Said a bunch of intentionally suspicious stuff. He'll definitely have some kind of secret, but he may or may not be behind everything. He won't have an early game death, but he has a good shot at a mid or late game death.
Chance of being a victim: 40%
Chance of being a killer: 50%
Chance of surviving: 10%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 30%

Rantaro Amami: Ultimate ???
He has the same hair spike as Makoto and Hajime, which is highly suspicious. I'm guessing his Ultimate power is luck. He also clearly knows what's going on and is lying about losing his memory the second time. I don't think he's secretly behind everything, but he'll obviously have some kind of secret. He cannot die until his Ultimate talent and secret are revealed (also known as the Kyoko Clause).
Chance of being a victim: 20%
Chance of being a killer: 20%
Chance of surviving: 50%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 10%

Tenko Chabashira: Ultimate Aikido Master
Hard to read. I can easily imagine her as a victim, killer, or survivor. Minor chance of being behind everything, but very low. I like how she reacts to girls and boys differently.
Chance of being a victim: 32%
Chance of being a killer: 32%
Chance of surviving: 32%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 4%

Himiko Yumeno: Ultimate Magician
Before I played this game, I actually thought to myself, "If I was going to write Danganronpa fan fiction, what Ultimate talent would I invent for a character that hasn't already been used?" ****ing nailed it. Anyway, this girl's gimmick is thinking magic's real. Not sure what to make of her. I can easily imagine magic tricks being used in a crime since Phoenix Wright went out of its way to drill every possible use of that shtick into my mind. If magic panties show up, I'm out of here.
Chance of being a victim: 50%
Chance of being a killer: 50%
Chance of surviving: 0%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 0%

Miu Iruma: Ultimate Inventor
See, I get that D1, D2, and D3 used up a lot of good Ultimate talents, but this is kind of stretching things. "Ultimate Inventor" is so nebulous. Of note: Miu's abrasive personality is the closest thing we have to a "non-team player" character like Byakuya or Fuyuhiko, both of whom survived. I'm wondering who the person who causes conflict in the group will be, and she appears to have the highest chance of being it. Still, this character screams 'mid-game death' to me. If she dies, I don't think she'll die early or late.
Chance of being a victim: 30%
Chance of being a killer: 20%
Chance of surviving: 50%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 0%

Ryoma Hoshi: Ultimate Tennis Pro
I hate to admit that I laughed at his super deep voice. Anyway, this is our "off-model" character, AKA Hifumi/Teruteru guy. Both of them died, so I think this guy is definitely dying. The question is if he'll be a victim or a killer, and he just feels more killer-y to me. He will die in the early or mid game, but not the late game.
Chance of being a victim: 40%
Chance of being a killer: 60%
Chance of surviving: 0%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 0%

Maki Harukawa: Ultimate Child Caregiver
... What the hell is this? Was "Ultimate Babysitter" already taken? Byakuya still holds the record for most awkwardly translated Ultimate title, but this is close. Anyway, she's sullen and doesn't like her talent, so I feel like she's going to die. However! I would have said that for Toko as well, and she lived, so I could easily be wrong here. Kaede being a girl is also throwing off my survival math.
Chance of being a victim: 30%
Chance of being a killer: 50%
Chance of surviving: 10%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 10%

Korekiyo Shinguji: Ultimate Anthropologist
Seems most similar to Gundham. This will be our wildcard character; I can't predict him at all.
Chance of being a victim: 25%
Chance of being a killer: 25%
Chance of surviving: 25%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 25%

Kirumi Tojo: Ultimate Maid
See, we can have two Ultimate Detectives and two Ultimate Lucky Students, but we need a separate Ultimate Maid from the Ultimate Housekeeper? Dubious. I am also shocked that they resisted the urge to go full French maid with her outfit. Her quiet personality gives me the impression that she'll be a killer, but her focus on duty implies a high chance of betraying everyone. Very low chance of survival here.
Chance of being a victim: 30%
Chance of being a killer: 50%
Chance of surviving: 10%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 40%

Kaito Momota: Ultimate Astronaut
See, this is hard. I would have said that this guy was definitely going to die, everything about him screams early-to-midgame death like Taka in the first game. However, we don't have a clearly defined "random boy who survives" like Yasuhiro and Kazuichi. Shuichi and Rantaro are clearly too important to be that character (if they even survive at all), and all of the other male characters seem a little too wacky to fill the role, so this guy defaults to being the male survivor. Now, let's watch him die early and make me look like an idiot.
Chance of being a victim: 30%
Chance of being a killer: 10%
Chance of surviving: 60%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 0%

Gonta Gokuhara: Ultimate Entomologist
Oh man, if I complained earlier about the characters getting wackier over time... Well, the most certain I ever was that a character would die was Hifumi, but this guy is pretty high up there. Almost certainly going to die, and he feels like a killer to me.
Chance of being a victim: 40%
Chance of being a killer: 60%
Chance of surviving: 0%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 0%

Angie Yonaga: Ultimate Artist
I'm sorry, is she supposed to be Japanese? Because she has a Japanese last name, but she talks about being from a wacky island culture. Low chance of being our surviving generic female friend, but I'll allow it.
Chance of being a victim: 60%
Chance of being a killer: 20%
Chance of surviving: 20%
Chance of being secretly behind everything: 0%

Just as a side note, shouldn't the "chance to being secretly behind everything" add up to 100% across everyone, assuming you aren't implying that there will be co-conspirators? Put another way, who are your top picks for #1 victim, #1 killer, and "mastermind?"

I'm way too lazy to make the math add up properly for that sort of thing. As for the most likely in each category...

Most Likely Victim: Tsumagi or K1-B0
Most Likely Killer: Maki
Most Likely to Die Period: Ryoma
Most Likely to Survive besides Kaede: Kato and Rantaro
Most Likely Mastermind/Spy: Suichi or Kirumi

I don't care if my "most likely" suggestions aren't actually the highest percentage in their respective categories!

oh man, love that prediction post. CAN'T WAIT.
I really regret not doing one for D1, because most of my predictions in that game were correct besides Taka and Toko, so I would have looked like a genius.

- We go to the gym, where everyone has gathered.
- I actually really appreciate how Monokid is all giddy to say that the students have to kill each other. I guess you don't get to run a killing game that often.
- Oh boy, Monkuma is back. That took less time than I expected... Is this a new voice? It's definitely not the same as his old voice. Now I'm wondering if this is just a normal recast or if we're doing a Persona thing where (mega Persona 5 spoilers) Igor being recast is actually important.
- "Daddy gets all his alternate facts from the most trusted names in fake news!" Gonna level with you, I did not expect Donald Trump political commentary in Danganronpa.
- I think my favorite moment of the game so far has been Kaede's text box saying "We'll never participate in a killing game," but her voice over line being "I'll do it!"
- And now we have a James Bond opening sequence. This took me off-guard. Extremely suspicious that everyone in the collage has normal clothing on, but Rantaro's shirt is all shiny and weird-looking.
- The fact that we have a new rule that says the trials continue until only two students remain is INCREDIBLY suspicious.
- Rantaro is really channeling Nagito in some of his stances.
- "An important hole near some bush!? Sounds familiar, am I right, ladies!?" I can see why this character is the most memed in the game.
- As I am exposed more to Kaito, his survival chance drops greatly.
- Tried the weird platformer minigame several times by resetting, never got close. Is there some alternate ending if you can actually succeed?

There is a special scene for clearing the minigame, but it's not actually something worth doing. Would actually advise against it.

Oh boy, Monkuma is back. That took less time than I expected... Is this a new voice? It's definitely not the same as his old voice.
Monokuma was recast in Japanese, but not English. Brian Beacock simply forgot how to do the role.

(Interestingly enough, Beacock also voices Monosuke.)

I thought he was new too when I played it.

After a while it started to sound like him again to me though.

I've watched several Let's Plays of DRV3 on YouTube over the years, and basically all of them get the initial impression that Monokuma has a new voice. You'll notice over the course of the game that he eventually kinda slides back into the correct voice. He starts off way too high-pitched and very slowly lowers it as the game goes on.

Regarding the in-universe implications of Monokuma sounding different (MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR CHAPTER 6):

Of course he'd have to be recast at some point. DRV3, at the earliest, takes place 30 years after DR1 came out in-universe.

- Found a "Mysterious Monument" with musical notes on it. I can't possibly guess who will be involved in interacting with it.
- We've never had a murder in the dining hall before, have we? I wonder if this game will break that record. Probably not.
- A new motive! "First Blood Perk," huh. This is actually really interesting, last game's motives were so weak that I don't even remember what they were.
- Now that I'm listening for it, I can tell that Monokuma has the same VA, but he's doing a terrible job of it.
- I legit thought Kaito was going to die for attacking Monokuma and that I'd look like an idiot.
- I still have no idea what this Reaction Voice thing is for.
- The globe in the library has Hawaii, but no Caribbean islands except Cuba and Peurto Rico. Poor Barbados.
- Shuichi's like "LOL THERE'S A SPY." Gotta say, this is the fastest we've learned there's a spy in any game so far.
- Monokuma threatens to kill us all with Monokuma robots if no one dies within two days. Dudes, I played UDG, I know you can kill those things with scissors.
- As "pink smears?" Every time previous to this that we saw pink blood, someone said it was really red. I guess Monokuma does sometimes break the fourth wall, though.
- Yeah, I figured Kokichi would be the one who runs off on his own.
- I appreciate how the camaraderie falls apart quickly. That was something that bothered me about D2, how even when things were at their craziest, no one ever seemed particularly suspicious of anyone else except Fuyuhiko and Nagito.
- God, this series loves the phrase "can't forgive," as if you'd ever forgive someone for throwing you into a high school murder game in the first place.
- I just noticed Rantaro's Likes are "Extraterritorial Rights." Mmmmmm, I should upgrade his chances of being the mastermind.
- Gonta is 6'6" and looks like a pro wrestler, but he weighs 207 pounds. Shut up.
- "I cannot imagine Monokuma having any sort of political agenda." Kirumi, we JUST HAD a fake news joke.
- "What do you and your pathetic tits want?"
- Miu's chances of dying first have risen now that she's become more important.

- I just realized Kaede's skirt has musical notes on it. Look, I'll allow the music note hair things, but the skirt's pushing it a little.
- Jesus Christ, Kaede organized a lot of books there.
- I just realized how much more time we've spent with cameras in a game that doesn't have the Ultimate Photographer.
- Rantaro's dead. GodDAMMIT the Kyoko Clause failed me, now I look like an idiot.
- "Violent crimes are almost always committed by violent, disgusting males!" Let's actually double-check that. Combining D1 and D2, counting Hifumi and Chiaki, but discounting Sakura, we have Male Killers: 5, Female Killers: 5. Yeah, nope.
- Don't think you can sneak that "political correctness" PC pun spoken by a robot past me, game.
- Wow, game, had to sneak in that "teenage girl with enormous boobs in nothing but a bra" shot, huh. And after Kaede said Miu had "udders." Ridiculous.
- Three possibilities, but one is much more likely than the others. I'm going 70% on Gonta killed Rantaro by throwing the shot ball through the slightly opened AV Room door, which is why Gonta can't be seen in the photos. However, I will allow a 15% chance that the killer was waiting in the vent the entire time we were setting up the cameras, which is why he can't be seen. If that's the case, Ryoma becomes the prime suspect. There is another 15% chance that the killer is Shuichi, who somehow set up the shot ball to fall over when Rantaro inspected the camera and he did something during the brief period when he left the classroom. If it's Gonta, he'll say he didn't admit to it because it's ungentlemanly; if it's not Gonta, I don't have an explanation for that part.

Actually, throw in an additional 5% chance that the killer is Miu, and she hid her drone in the vent somehow.

Actually actually, throw in another 5% chance that Rantaro killed himself for some crazy reason. I doubt it because that's what happened with Nagito, and I don't think we'd have another blond prettyboy do that, but who knows.

- Dammit, stupid Gonta not being the killer, makes me look dumb. I even looked at the picture to check if it would be possible to avoid this, but I just misread the picture, I guess.
- I just realized, has every single girl in these games worn a skirt or dress?
- Wait, Rantaro opened the door, then took thirty seconds to go check out the camera? Hm.
- Looking back, I should have known it was Kaede from the fact that I couldn't do more than two support conversations with Kirumi when I tried and the Hidden Monokumas not showing up in her room. I thought both of those things were weird, but didn't make the connection.
- Not gonna lie, I think Kaede's rationale for not taking the First Blood option seems kind of weak, but I'll allow it.
- The horror of Kaede's execution and everyone's reaction to it are dulled a little bit by the Monokubs goofing around, but so be it.
- At some point, I need to go back and rank the executions. Kaede's seems like it'd be higher up, though.
- After the trial, three mysterious people look at a picture of Kaede and talk about "that group." Gonta then reminds the audience that there are no bugs in the school. What does this meaaaaaaaan?
- Well, I'll admit that I got everything wrong, not just about the trial, but also my initial character reactions. I knew it was weird to have two people who look like protagonists, but I guessed the wrong one as a potential killer. The game got me! Not only on that, but also on Rantaro being the one killed. I'm sure his ultimate talent will still be revealed after a while and it'll be explained how he knew about the bookcase. Maybe he had Ultimate Intuition or something, I don't know. This was fun, although I wonder what someone who didn't play the first two would think of it. The game is off to a good start.

What's this back route mechanic the game mentioned? What does it do, exactly?
