Sorry, but no. A lot of companies will either force employees to use valuable PTO and have the whole day off or, alternatively, punish employees who arrive even slightly late regardless of their reason. So if you take the time off to vote and the line is a bit long you risk getting punished or fired or, alternatively, have to use up one of your valuable free days in order to vote. A sacrifice many are not willing to make.

IMO companies should be required to provide at least 1 hour for voting if not forced to make it a half-day regardless of what they do or service they provide. If a person chooses to work a full day they get full overtime bonuses on that day.

How hard is it to go before or after work? Plus if anything you'd think Dems would love that it isn't a day off for everyone, most Dems don't work and live off the hard work of Republicans anyways.

Pretty hard considering some people have to wait in line for HOURS just to vote

I'm early voting this week. There'll still be a line I'm sure, but I can just imagine the nightmare waiting until the actual Election Day.

in canada it's not a holiday, but employers have to give you time to vote if you're scheduled longer than the polls are open (don't think they have to pay you for it though)

i think the bigger problem in the US is that there aren't enough voting stations and people have wait hours in line. i've never had a wait longer than a few minutes

I don't think it'd make much difference. A federal holiday won't change things for the people who have the hardest time getting out to vote. It's not like a federal holiday shuts everything down. Even on Christmas you still have people working.

An actual solution -- instead of something stupid like this -- would be early voting.

Neither have I, and I live in America. Everybody highlights the long lines, but those are outliers, not the norm.

How many people even get holidays off? Great for kids to get out of school, but I don't think it impacts that many people eligible to vote.

State and local governments target predominantly poor and minority neighborhoods to close polling stations since they tend to heavily lean Democrat. You haven't encountered this because you don't live in one of these neighborhoods.

Yes, it should be for a few reasons, but it won't solve all issues and most people that work retail or food industry would still have to work like most other holidays. However, having it a national holiday would increase turn-out, which I think most people would think is a good thing. Also, USA probably has the fewest national holidays, so adding another is not that big of deal, we probably should have more days off throughout the year.

Yes, and we should also move elections to Saturday for good measure.

Saturdays are literally the busiest days of the week for many businesses.

A largely bullshit claim considering that it overlooks that this isn't a problem in most places that also fit the description and that there are countless other factors influencing it (including turnout during non-presidential elections and the large amount of support). And, I should mention, I've lived in predominately minority areas where I didn't have any problem either because -- once again -- the stories about long lines are extreme outliers just like most things you see on the news.

It very likely won't do much to improve turnout.
