As far as I know the protest was due to the taking down of a Robert E Lee statue. Maybe it wasn't. I am under the impression it was. Donald Trump clarified his statements that the good people he were talking about were the ones who came to protest the Robert E Lee statue coming down and not those who were violent. And he condemned many of the violent groups you are against.

If he was wrong and no one was there to solely protest about the statues, then he didn't say there was good people on that side because those are the people he was referring to then.

The statue was a post-hoc pretext. The event was called "Unite the Right", and the point was to gather all of the neo-nazi, white supremacist, and extremist alt-right groups together as a display of unity.

The campaigns would have to agree to it. They had an argument over common-sense safety precautions in a pandemic where Pence has been around a bunch of the people. You think they (or any politician, really) would agree to a mute button?

The first debate was so bad that they started openly considering it but I don't anticipate them actually going through with it.

Something interesting in the New York Times report on Trump's taxes that I don't think has been emphasized elsewhere, is that Congress actually probably already has his tax returns.

Apparently Trump is under audit for a massive $70 million refund he received ten or so years ago, and any refund over $2 million is automatically reviewed by a special congressional subcommittee, with all of the identifying information scrubbed from the report. So there is a Congressional committee that has reviewed Trump's taxes; they just don't know it.

DOJ just lifted them with special attention to postal workers and military employees.

Ehh...I think it's their way of targeting Pennsylvania (which tends to have a lot of moderate voters who dislike extremists on either side of the aisle).

Normally states like Pennsylvania will swing against really extreme candidates like Trump (or sanders, going by the 2016 primary). Didn't happen in the 2016 general, but it's their default.

The Trump campaign seems to have decided that there's no way for them to avoid appearing extreme, so they're just trying to make their opponents appear extreme instead. And in particular try to tie them to rioting and looting, and just...generally lie and suggest they would be very disruptive (like saying they would ban gasoline). People who supported Bernie in the primary and called Biden "status quo Joe" for months aren't going to be fooled. But like...an undecided Pennsylvania voter who just wants calm...is typically anti-riot, and anti banning things that would disrupt their day to day lives.

Of course it only takes minimal research to show that Trump/Pence really are extremists, and that Biden/Harris are pretty moderate. But I guess they're banking on people not doing research.

And it's failing miserably. Because once again no one actually believes it outside of the type of people already planning on voting Trump. It's why not only Biden is polling ahead in Pennsylvania, it's that he's polling routinely in the 50+% range.

Trump can't win this way.

I think he also pulled the NDA shit on WH employees (which is completely absurd; they work for the US government, not for him); I imagine he wants to make them feel extra threatened. It wouldn't surprise me if that's what's making Conley do this whole song and dance to avoid answering any questions instead of just straight out saying "I was only authorized to share X, Y, and Z, and if you want to know anything else you'll have to take that up with the President"
