A suspicion I've had about the reinfections that are supposedly worse the second time around is that the people never actually got infected the first time around. According to a Lancet article from the end of September which I read sometime last week, in the UK somewhere between 0.8% and 4% of tests that return positive are false positives. It's not because of a weakness with the test (specificity on many tests used is extremely high) but generally from a variety of forms of contamination of the sensitive test.

So what could be seen with these people is just an initial infection that happens to be moderate to severe.

I don't think reinfections are real either because they said some people seem to have immunity from sars are even regular colds. If from sars though, that's like a decade prior.

If there is saliva in the food and I digest it, why wouldn't it pass

I think they're usually saying the virus cannot survive inside food, like it would in a living body.

But I imagine it can still last on the surface of food for almost a full day.

Yeah if you live with someone who has Covid, chances are you're going to get it even if they never leave their room/wear a mask. The virus stays in the air and can be spread through ventilation systems.

Given the insane gain of function this thing has, I legitimately think its impossible to contain it. Hard immunity or a vaccine are the only ways to go, and the latter probably wont even work given most corona strains are known to mutate.

This seems to be easy to create a vaccine for and to gain immunity because the protein spike or whatever is so close to the beginning of the chain. The mutations always seem to come later on. That's why immunity is being seen from those with even colds or sars or so on.

i remember when i was freaking out over 1200 new cases in a day back in march lol.

Hospital I work at is breaking its record for COVID patients every week. And we are now setting up another area of the hospital to hold more patients cause the other two are almost full.

My previous symptoms are gone..even the smell came back

But there is a new symptom that is even more worrying - shortness of breath
Thanksfully it's only when I am laying on bed, and it's "mild" but it makes it very hard for me to fall asleep
I also fear this is going to be permanent/for a long time

I dont know what the point of Lockdown 1 was if its just gonna get worse and worse way more than what they feared then. Lockdown 1 was useless because they stopped it too soon. All that effort and scrapping by and people suddenly being out of work. So yeah they need Lockdown 2.

Lockdown1 sorta did work to slow it down, but yeah we threw away all those bonuses now.

But I imagine one reason for such a sharp increase in cases is also that we test a lot more

My problem with lockdowns is that they don't have a endgame
I mean yeah we already had the first lockdown, saw great results, but then now the "second wave" is even worse and we are having another lockdown
Then what? in 2 months from now we will have a third lockdown? to what end? until we have a vaccine?
I have been hearing "the vaccine is close to being ready" for months now

The endgame is to achieve herd immunity, whether through a vaccine or enough people getting sick without overloading the medical system.

What this virus has shown is that in most countries the medical system was already nearly filled to capacity so we don't have much of a buffer when something like this happens. We're lucky that COVID-19 isn't as bad as some of the early reports.

I think that's mostly just saying social distancing, hygiene, masks, etc. are the best models and lockdowns should only be used in last resorts because suicide and domestic violence numbers seem to counteract the lockdown benefits.

It actually seems like if everybody follows the rules (no big events, universal mask use, social distancing, doing things outdoors instead of indoors, etc) and we have contact tracing we can probably keep R under 1 (though it's possible that things get worse in the winter and that's no longer enough). When things get really bad there's kind of no alternative to a lockdown, though, because you need the number of active infections to drop ASAP.

Unfortunately some people seem to be incapable of even making the minimal sacrifice of wearing a mask, though.

Lockdown is supposed to be used for 2 to 6 weeks but it has to actually be strictly followed and you know, nationally implemented unless you have border control within the nation. The last part has been the biggest problem with the United States.

Yeah this is the issue with the US. People are literally too stupid to follow the simplest guidelines.

Like I had to call the cops the other night to escort a troublemaker out of my store and a not a single one of the 3 cops that came into my store had a damn mask on. -_- Like if the cops aren't even gonna abide by our executive order nor our own store rules, then of course neither are the people.
