I remember when Steve was THE most dreaded possibility, by far, barring perhaps a Three Houses character. Since then, Minecraft has become cool again (like Pokemon did in the late 2000s), through a combination of nostalgia and the weird "Fortnite bad Minecraft good" culture war.

Steve is still going to piss quite a few people off, but they were wise to wait this long for his inclusion. If he was included in the base roster, the reaction would have been far worse.

Personal take: no way I'm buying him, but hey, still better than Cinderace.

Minecraft is a very general population kind of game, not really our slice of things. You don't expect Minecraft to have any power here do you? (At least before today!)

Yeah, it's a very whatever pick. I don't care about him one bit, but it's easy enough not to buy him. Saves me a couple bucks, really.

And it's hard to say he's not worthy of inclusion.

Probably shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, there's sort of a huge generational war when it comes to Minecraft - a lot of adults our age love it but a lot just really don't accept it as part of the gaming pantheon

I mean, even I have to admit that this is probably the first character pick that makes me feel old, I've never really "gotten" Minecraft and this one makes me feel extremely out of the loop. But I'm happy for people who are really excited about this

but something about Steve is just off putting to me. Hes just such a nothing empty avatar, I feel absolute zero attachment to him.

Suppose so, but with a roster of like 80 characters, I imagine everyone already has SOME of their favorites in Smash. Getting this salty over one of gaming's biggest ever IPs (and a Western one that brings a new graphical style and mechanics to Smash) is kinda beyond me at this age. If it makes kids freak out and grows the Smash universe (it will do both), I say awesome. I mean seriously - Minecraft or Min Min?

They liked showing how you can "build" in the trailer
Which looks cool

But how is this practical? you don't stop the game, build your own castle, and then ask people to come at you

I don't think most people on B8 are upset. We just don't care.

Look I get being frustrated, but people swinging out with "why wasn't it GENO??" are on a different fucking planet. It will never be Geno. Nintendo will not acknowledge a character like that when their current mandate says the Mario RPG teams aren't even allowed to put a hat on a fucking goomba anymore.

Been a long time since I browsed /v/ but from browsing it back when Ultimate just came out the most requested/rumored characters I remember Banjo Kazoiee, Steve, and...Doomguy
2 of those 3 turned out to be real

Man, it makes me sad to see so much dismissal towards Min Min. She's an adorable character, ARMS is really fun and it was refreshing to see a new first-party IP included in the DLC.

But she's a "Smash 4"-style pick, if that makes sense, and I think people's priorities have shifted considerably with Ultimate. The gap between first-party and third-party demand has never been wider.

I wasnt sure about the pick at first, but the gameplay footage looked super fun. I always like something different. Plus having 4 characters in one is a nice touch.

This is what happens when you start ramping up the amount of third-party characters to start including Cloud, Joker and Banjo and when the final few first-party characters everyone can get behind (Inkling, RIdley, King K.Rool) finally get in. Now the preferred or most likely first-party options are either considered boring (Impa), polarizing (Waluigi), "No more of this please" (Pokemon and Fire Emblem), and "we're gonna include some WTF character no one seriously considered" (Someone super-retro like ROB or GAW, or something like Pirahna Plant).

People just didn't have a lot of fun playing Min Min. Or ARMs, for that matter. The pick 'makes sense' but at the end of the day I think most people were apathetic.

I watched the trailer again for its own merits and am honestly incredibly impressed. That was a fantastic trailer and Steve looks wild to play. The stage looks great as well. Honestly the only thing that seems middling about this is I can't imagine this doing anything for the music roster.

I don't care about Minecraft but he looks good enough as a character that I might dive back in for this.
