I enjoy watching tournaments, but I haven't played fighting games in a long time. None of my friends play them and the newer ones don't have interesting single player modes.

I haven't played a fighting game since around the year 2000.
I could never get into them because they're inherently social games. They're basically the only genre of game I could not get into.

Generally no. The Naruto Storms were alright and some people call For Honor a fighting game which i used to play a lot but im still not a fan of the traditional stuff like Tekken, SF, and such.

Not anymore, it used to be one of my favorite genres, but that ended when I lost access to people to play with locally. Last one i played was whichever soul calibur game was on the 360 (4 or 5?). Played a ton of smash 64, melee and a decent bit of early mortal kombat, soul calibur, and tekken . Plus a smattering of other random fighters.

Melee was my best one and my favorite, and its by far the game I have the most hours in.

Once in a while. I basically stopped after they started getting ridiculous with teams and stances and all kinds of shit. I'm more into old school fighters, you pick your dude, they have some special moves, you beat the shit out of the other dude.

I used to play fighting games in high school and college, but I kind of lost interest as time went on. My golden age was mostly Street Fighter 2 (the first few iterations), Mortal Kombat 1-3 (plus Trilogy), Tekken 2-3, and SoulCaliber 1-3 or so. Oh, and throw ClayFighter in there.

I don't know if I'd consider them fighting games, though technically they sort of fit. I always sort of think of them as a different genre that kind of combines fighters and beat-em-ups with different unique mechanics (ie, pins, submissions, weapons, etc).

I used to be hugely into wrestling games (especially the SmackDown to SmackDown vs Raw period, where there was incredibly flexible character creation and storylines you could play through). Once they started going the online/sim route (the last few SvR games and then into the 2k games), and started phasing out CAW story mode in favor of just playing through storylines for established wrestlers, I lost interest really, really fast. I think the last one I bought was SvR 2007 or 2008.

It didn't help that I sort of lost interest in wrestling as a whole around that period as well. I stopped watching WWE sometime around 2001/02 or so, so I had no real attachment to any of the wrestlers in the later games. So that combined with the game mechanics leaving me less and less interested.

I'm kind of hoping that, with the 2k20 clusterfuck and them saying they need to try and get back to a more arcade-y style of gameplay (along with AEW talking about wanting to make a "No Mercy"-style game of their own), I might be able to get back into those sorts of games in a few years. Or maybe not.

While it does kinda seem like its own genre because it's "sports athletics", it kinda feels like it's being discounted for the same non-traditional combat claim that excludes SSB.

I'd give them a separate nod on fighter lists; the only objection I have is that it's presented as a sport and we don't really count boxing or MMA as fighters either. However, it's also not technically a sport so.... meh.

At my peak (probably in my teens/early 20s) probably reaching the 20-30hr mark (which sounds obsessive since it's pretty much work week hours) I really don't see how anyone can play them 40+Hrs a week unless you a Paid Pro Player, b/c even back then I still had PT jobs/school/GF/kid to deal with

Nowadays as an old man, probably about 10-20 peak, usually on weekends if I'm really into whatever FG game I'm playing (only SFV and T7 atm)...but I haven't played any of them for awhile now (on my MMO binge with TOR)

Nah not really my thing. I think the last one I really played was Virtua Fighter 4.

Idk I just prefer farming crops, farming exp, or crafting personally. Nothing against fighting games, but matches that are self contained and do nothing for an overall in game growth just don't excite me. (I used to play some Budokai though back in the day tbh. That kinda has some growth potential via buying capsules I guess. )

Yeah, but that looks like it's going to lack anything resembling character creation or story modes, which is about 98% of why I play those sorts of games. While I might enjoy the gameplay if a friend bought it and wanted to play, I probably won't buy it myself unless they announce CAW/campaign is part of it.

Plus, all the character models kind of look like they're out of Celebrity Deathmatch. Not sure I'm really into that cartoony caricature style of design (though I suppose it could grow on me).

The first fighting game I ever played was Yie Ar Kung-Fu. I could get as far as Fan, who throws these fans in the air which plays havoc with the usual jumping attack technique that works against everyone else. This was back in the days when you had to put money into a machine each time you wanted to play, so getting good could get expensive.

Name one genre worse than fighting.

Fmv games, they're basically dead. I mean from late 16 bit and early 32 bit days, not like shenmue where it is adventure.

Fighting can be very niche, but there is much diversity. You have wrestlers and brawlers like smash and WWF, then you have combo input like mortal kombat and street fighter, and then the more traditional like virtua fighter.

I love me some Sega, so I'll pop in a fighter every now and again, especially virtua fighter and its clones. Lately I play a lot of old school smackdown cause the story mode just keeps me going.
Last Bronx is a really cool looking and fun fighter. I'll pop that in for a few rounds of survival mode if I wanna beat someone with a skateboard, hammer or other weapons.
