I played the original a couple years ago and it totally holds up. This one looks pretty janky so I dunno if it's even an upgrade. The dialogue and visuals seem like they lost something. Probably will still get it anyway.

I feel like assuming the position that "remaster" means nothing more than "lol we changed the resolution" is really reductive to the term and similarly ends up reducing the term "remake" as well by rolling in a ton of things that don't deserve to be called such.

Reimagining and reboot are pretty much the same thing I just couldn't think of the word reboot at the time

Remakes cover a broad spectrum and this is just a low budget remake

Despite the title, to me, final fantasy 7 remake is an entirely new game that just happens to bear similarities to the original final fantasy 7

How is this an argument you guys had in here, they are literally calling it Prince of Persia The Sands of Time Remake. Like that's the title. So it's a remake. Doesn't matter if you personally don't qualify it as a remake because the graphics aren't completely up to snuff or whatever, they're literally calling it a remake.

Depending on how things go with the story from now on, I feel like I'd agree with SHINE's view on FF7R since starting from the next part you'll probably barely be able to call it a remake at all.

What makes it a remake, exactly?

A remaster is when you touch up the visuals (and the audio, in many cases) of an existing game but don't change anything else. N Sanity is completely identical to the originals in every way besides visuals and a few new physics quirks from them using Warped's physics across all three games. Just because they did a really good job updating the visuals doesn't suddenly propel it into another category. There needs to be (and is) a distinction between updating an existing game and actually creating something new and different using an existing title/story.

N.sanity is still remake territory to me. I could look at that and think it's a new game and not just the old crash games

To me a remaster still looks like the original game just with higher resolutions and maybe better textures like I think of the God of War HD collections on PS3

Xenoblade is where it gets tricky because while the character models are definitely remade the majority of the world itself still looks exactly the same as it did on wii so I'm more likely to say it's a remaster

Remasters are the original game with just minor touches like higher resolution, improved textures, maybe redone character models, etc. When the entire graphics engine is brand new, that's when it enters remake territory. And then there's wildly different levels of remakes from just a simple graphic overhaul but still recognizably the same game to something a lot more substantial like REmake 2. In fact that's a fairly good example REmake vs REmake 2, both just remakes but on different ends of the scale.

If you look at it as a technical term, it's easy to tell what is a remaster and what is a remake. A remaster takes the original game data and pipeline, and upgrades it. It's like those Skyrim mods that upgrade textures, audio, and shaders to make the original game content look better. The line between "the original content" and the upgraded stuff can be blurry, but the point is you start with the original game source data. This is matches up with remasters of a movie or song. They use the original data and just use new technology to produce a better final result.

A remake is actually a new product entirely. You can use the original game source as a reference (e.g. CTR remake using the old code to match the feel of the physics) but essentially all the assets and code in the game is new.

For players, this distinction doesn't really matter that much, and a remake can easily be worse than a remaster. But the words are now commonplace in games marketing so we're stuck with them.

tbh an entirely new graphics engine, while keeping all the game data the same, is pretty firmly a remaster. When a game is rendered to the screen, there's a long data pipeline, and the graphics engine is at the very end before it gets displayed on your screen. You can definitely swap that out without affecting the game itself. That's what cross-platform ports are, especially cross-generation remasters.

TLOU PS4 goes even farther with an all new graphics engine, and also an all new game engine that goes from a single thread to many coordinated threads. Lots of code had to be rewritten for that. But the core gameplay logic, the scripting of what actually happens in the game, was the same.
