I tried starting with Metroid NES on virtual console and I just can't tbh.
Thankfully I can eventually get the remake on GBA and Metroid 2 remake on 3DS so I can avoid the primitive ones.
It'll take me awhile to be able to get GBA versions though. Is Super Metroid a good start?
I have the prime trilogy though never made it very far in the first prime game. I plan to play through those also

No, start with either the original or Zero Mission. Granted, it's not a franchise where you necessarily need to start anywhere with the exception of the trilogy which should come after each other.

It's worth the wait.

Ok, so, start with Zero Mission, then 3ds metroid 2 remake, Super Metroid, Fusion, MP trilogy in that order would be good?

it's hard to get started what with those stupidly long vertical corridor rooms, but once you make it to the first boss or so things start to click a lot better.

Super Metroid contains a brief synopsis of the original game and Return of Samus, so it is not a bad starting point. If you can play Zero Mission first, though, do that.

Super Mertroid is honestly a good enough entry point, considering it gives you a rundown of the first 2 games in the opening.

trying to remember... I was thinking my nephew beat metroid 1, but now that I think of it, I think he got stuck at certain parts. he did beat Super Metroid repeatedly though. so I guess metroid 1 is definitely harder. pretty sure I've beaten metroid 1 though but it was a long time ago.

I'd just start there yeah, unless you're going for chronological story-wise. In that case, Zero Mission

Also try AM2R, personally it's my favorite Metroid

The original Metroid 1 is kinda tedious to play.
You always have to grind health and missiles for so long every time you die.

If you're gonna play it, I'd recommend using the ingame Invincible code(you also get most of the upgrades+infinite missiles).
The game is tedious as it is and cutting off one other tedious thing is worth it IMO and you get to explore as you wish.

I think I've beaten it two times legit and I'll never have the patience to do it again.

The original Metroid 2 is better because at least it's somewhat linear.

I still have my original Metroid NES cart and never beat it legitimately as a kid...I had to snatch codes from Nintendo Power and friends.

Zero Mission, however, makes the original Metroid very tolerable and quite fun. I actually prefer Zero Mission to Super.

I love og NES Metroid, but I can see where it didn't age well if you didn't play it when it first came out. Super Metroid is a classic but the movement feels really floaty to me.

Like someone else said, I'd try Zero Mission first which is basically the first game remade with many improvements.

nes metroid is... well it's a game! I don't really like it, and I love old nintendo games :x

gb metroid II is actually pretty solid. I like it a lot better than the generic-ass remake nintendo put out

super metroid obviously the best

fusion is real good, but very linear

zero mission is a better way to play the original metroid, even if it's different at it's core

edit: but yeah, like some others have said and/or posted games, there are a lot of other games to play if you want a metroid-type experience without playing metroid. A lot of them are generic/overhyped trash, but a lot of them are reeeeeeal good

Played, yes, beaten, no. Made more progress on Switch and can't show the ingame achievements (which determine unlocks for later runs) there, but I do have 8 on Steam.

Waiting to play Mega Map on Switch, it is already on Steam, but don't have enough done to unlock it there (must have been to all biomes).

The OG Metroid is kinda old school retro tough, for many Millenials who chose to play it today.

It was hard for me as well as a young kid, but I think when I got into my early teens, I was able to finish it.

Nowadays, it's kinda easy, if you know what to do.

And now I have beaten a run. :D

Got 25 / 76 in game achievements on Switch right now. Steam is only showing 75 in game, but since it doesn't match the total count on Steam, I think at least some are hidden achievements.

Anyway, a lot more work ahead either way.

Yup . The Prime Trilogy takes place in between Metroid II and Super Metrpid, Fusion is Metroid 4 and so far no games have gone beyond that.

Looks like the bug bit me, too. Got Switch Online and jumped right back into Super Metroid. Unfortunately, I do not remember as much of it as I thought I did; still easy to get lost in Maridia. Not getting optimum time on this one, but I can always play it again. And I will. Love this game.
