Which class do you choose?

This occurred to me, that I've only ever chosen Rogue as my initial class once in an RPG.

I voted equally but it's really more of a game-by-game basis. I probably have a tendency towards mages but it really depends.

Really depends on the game. How useful is magic? Does it replenish easily? Or do you have to manage your MP?

I've always liked mage because it was one of those things I 100% couldn't do in real life.

I can swing a sword, I can fire a bow and arrow (I couldn't do any of these things well mind you, but they are possible).

I will never be able to throw a fireball with my hands, so that's the type of thing I gravitate towards in RPGs.

Heavily system dependent and I'd probably do some basic research on class expectations. But in a generic vacuum, it'd generally be mage. There's a ton of depth that systems can give to fighters and rogues, but magic begs to have it by default. It also plays nicely into weak-to-strong arcs as a low level wimpy mage if left unmolested will transform into a reality shaping force that even the gods tread lightly around. Or, if the system isn't that robust, will at least let you zap things with impunity.

Mage almost always, but sometimes I'll pick a rogue if I'm feeling spicy or if the casting system in the game is extremely counter-intuitive. Fighter bores me.

Usually fighter as I can just mash attack through random low-level battles instead of having to drain MP and select spells etc. Hitting things hard is just satisfying. Also they usually balance the party around the expectation that you'll be a fighter, so there will be mages around anyway.

Archer

This or a healing class used to be my standbys. I always operated with this mentality of "If I don't die, I win." Therefore if I can do damage without taking any, or if I can recover the damage afterwards, those would always be my preference.

More recently I've turned to playing melee types for a lot of things. But ultimately, I picked magic user for the poll because that's what I would play in Quest For Glory and this poll seems tailor-made for that.

For no reason, I made a list of each class I played first in class-based RPGs. Not sure where to place a few of them, paladin in particular seems hard to choose.

Warrior
- Dragon Age II (Warrior)
- Diablo (Warrior)
- Planescape: Torment (Fighter)
- Mass Effect (Soldier)
- Knights of the Old Republic II (Jedi Knight)

Rogue
- Dragon Age: Origins (Rogue)
- Torchlight (Vanquisher)

Mage
- Diablo 2 (Necromancer)
- Diablo 3 (Wizard)
- Pillars of Eternity (Cipher)
- Neverwinter Nights 2 (Wizard)
- Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (Tremere)
- Star Wars: The Old Republic (Sith Inquisitor)
- Grim Dawn (Arcanist)

Other
- Knights of the Old Republic (Jedi Sentinel)
- Torment: Tides of Numenera (Cipher)
- Neverwinter Nights (Bard/Fighter)
- World of Warcraft (Paladin)

Don't Remember
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate II

Oh geez, could I even make a list like that? I feel like that would be really tough to remember.

Fighter:
Divinity: Original Sin 1 & 2
Fallout 4
Kingdoms of Amalur
Oblivion & Skyrim (though maybe this should be rogue due to always using stealth)
Pillars of Eternity
Torchlight 2 (engineer)

Rogue: (these are literally all archers)
Diablo
Diablo 2
Diablo 3
Path of Exile
Torchlight
World of Warcraft

Mage: (includes clerics)
Champions of Norrath
Dragon Age: Origins
Morrowind
Neverwinter Nights
Quest For Glory series (though I played all three paths)

There's probably a bazillion other games that should be on here that I can't think of.

I've gravitated towards classes that have quicker attacks. I think it is better to do chip damage and back away, evade, or defend, then wade in and smash. I just think attack animations for "heavy" classes are just too much fuss for me. If it is a standard sword fighter, then the issue is less apparent. But give me a Tifa/Nel/Yang/punchy stabby person (sometimes with magic to boot in Nel's case), over the slower brutes.

In games like .hack, just use three dual swords/twin blade users, and the enemies are stunlocked to hell. It's madness.

Always a mage unless there's a class that is specifically built around guns.

Somehow the only thing more appealing to me than wielding fantastic/godly powers is using the most grounded weapon imaginable and just shooting evil beings with fantastic/godly powers in the face.

Fighter if tabletop
Rogue if video game

Voted fighter because probably have made more fighters in general, but honestly for first time characters I've probably made more rogues now that I think about it.

Mage by default since I like it best aesthetically. But it depends on the game. If mage mechanics are annoying then I'll go for nonmagical range or melee.

I usually avoid stealth-based characters. I don't want to sneak around, I want to hit things for big damage.

I couldn't make an extensive list like those earlier.

I think whichever class seems like it would do the best at getting in the most things. So usually a Rogue/Thief/Hacker. Sneak & steal, and hope for stealth kills.
