The first to drop from the top 10 does so almost entirely for the music itself rather than the lyrics and villainy, and really this is because of my feelings toward Slayer more than anything. Slayer's always been hit or miss for me. I've ultimately just never cared for Tom Araya's voice much, despite definitely having respect for the band's talents. While I can definitely headbang to this song as good as any other, the lack of vocal variety from verse to verse just kept it from being all that it could be. As a villain song itself though, Dead Skin Mask nails it. It's one of the few songs nominated to take on a real villain instead of a fictional character, singing the song through the perspective of killer and body snatcher Ed Gein. I have to give Slayer props here, because lyrically they don't hold back, intimately tackling everything; Ed's obsession with corpses, his collapsing sanity, and his kidnapping and murders. Just in case it wasn't evil enough already, the song culminates with one of his victim's pleading to be released, with Gein/Araya drowning her out. There's not much on the list able to match the pure grisliness of that.

I seriously have to thank UF8 for introducing me to this song. I feel like a part of me has just been missing having not known about this sooner. Fun fact: The first time I listened to the song, I just listened to it and didn't look up any lyrics until after. I had to check several times to make sure I had the right song, because this is some (admittedly catchy as all hell) peppy peppy k-pop stuff that doesn't sound anything like what I imagine a "villain song" to sound like. It kind of reminded me of the first time I heard The Beatles' "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," which was an upbeat cheerful song about a guy murdering people with a hammer. These are some of the most hilariously sadistic lyrics of the entire contest, and I love it. I unfortunately had to deduct some characterization points because this told me very little about who the Seven Sisters were beyond a teen girl beyond that loves grisly slaughter. What a fuckin' banger though.

So Ayreon's wasn't the only concept album I made a note to myself to listen through after the list, as The Mountain Goats' "Beat the Champ" definitely caught my attention after this hit. On it's own the song is a real nice listen; the vocals are intense and the constant strum supporting it makes the whole song really gritty and raw. It's a little unsettling honestly, and I love it. But where this song really shines is in the way it builds up this character so well in so little time. The song follows what appears to be a professional wrestler, in character as a werewolf. He seems to be the star of the show, likely due to how well he plays up his character, but there's where things start to get wild. As the Werewolf gets WAY too into his character, he becomes an unreliable narrator. He starts talking about things like "blood pooling on the canvas." As a listener, it's difficult to know how much of this is serious is how much is part of the show? How much violence is he putting on as part of the character and how much is he actually inflicting? When he mentions everyone ending up "dead before the dawn," is he talking about the personas being abandoned post-show, or is he talking about actual slaughter? This is the kind of thing that made it very hard to rate for villainy, but either way it's safe to mark this guy as a danger to those around him.

I definitely do NOT need to thank Jesse Custer for introducing me to this song, beause I'd heard Psycho Killer probably more times than any other song on this list. For good reason too, because this is one of the most endlessly catch songs of all time. Is this the most famous song about a serial killer? It might be, and I'm definitely having trouble thinking of a bigger one. This is also one of the biggest cases of unreliable narrator in the list, as it's hard to tell exactly what this killer (inspired by Norman Bates) is truly doing. While his actual actions are vague, it's easy to infer that this is a man on the brink of insanity. He jumps back and forth between languages in a way that seems appropriate for his unhinged mental state. He vaguely rambles in French about the things he'd done the night before to an unnamed woman, in between vague ramblings in English over the petty things he hates about people, like their vanity and redundancy. More than anything else, it's the stream-of-consciousness way David Byrne sings that really makes this an unforgettable classic.

Great write up, and I didnt actually know about the Norman Bates inspiration, which makes me like the song more.

I remember hearing part of Psycho Killer as a kid, but this is the first time I had a title to go along with it. I guess songs about serial killers dont get much air time these days.

I was so glad to see a Starkid song nominated. There were plenty of options to choose from, and Kick It Up a Notch is easily one of the best, despite Starship not being their best musical (though it is still very good).Dylan Saunders has a fantastic voice, and (while this didn't factor into the ranking) I'm always impressed by how he manages to maintain the vocals so well while also puppeteering the giant crab head. This is definitely a song that takes advantage of its length, as we can follow the entire breakdown of Pincer enacting his plan. He offers Bug (the protagonist) a chance to become a human, then doubles down on pressuring him into it by convincing him it's his only chance to live his dream. And as Bug starts to give in, you quickly see Pincer's luring tone turn to one of aggression as he pushes Bug forward, before ultimately celebrating on the success of his plan to use Bug as bait so he and the mosquitos can devour the entire group of humans. It's essentially Moana's "Shiny" but with a little less dazzle and a lot more deception. Even the things I often dislike in some songs, like the break's from singing and the side characters chiming in, I don't mind here because 1. the side characters can actually sing worth a damn and 2. the talking never feels like a distraction, but instead a necessary part of the song. This is just a great example of everything being done very, very well.

Yeah, there's a reason Hamilton is the most acclaimed musical of the last... what, 2 decades at least, right? Fun fact, Jonathon Groff was born in my city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and nobody will ever shut the fuck up about it. It's kind of wild how much people here talk about him. And yeah, he's fantastic. Somehow despite only being in the musical for probably a total of 15 minutes at the absolute maximum, he manages to absolutely steal the show in a way that can only be topped by Daveed Diggs (who coincidentally is ALSO one of the remaining songs hmmmm). In the context of the musical, You'll Be Back comes out of nowhere, drastically changing both the tone and genre the rest of it was going for and giving us one of the most hilarious moments of the entire show. Groff has an excellent voice and absolutely nails the comedic portrayal of King George at the same time. King George comes across as a larger than life cartoon villain, giving the audience and other characters what seems like a love song. A love song in which he threatens to slaughter thousands in a war as a way of regaining America's love. I mean, this song, like every other Hamilton song, has already been discussed to death, and I'm sure its placement can't be that big of a surprise, because this is just one of the best villain songs to ever come off the stage.
