I usually carry it in a purse. If I don't have my purse, then it's pocket. If I don't have either, it's my hands.

Front left pocket, in a case. I used to keep my old flip phone in my front right pocket with my wallet, and my keys in my left, but since upgrading to a smartphone I swapped it with the keys because it's too big to share a pocket with my wallet.
