I haven't really been invested in a single player game like this for a while. Not sure why it clicked with me, but it did.

Should I try 4 afterwards? I kind of want to try the first two but that would be a bigger hassle

It's literally the matrix, not a game world.

Aliens take over the earth and shove people in there to control them.

It's a decent game but it's very, very easy. Once you learn basic superpowers you have practically no need for vehicles and weapons. I liked SR3 better.

SR2 > SR4 > SR3

SR2 is the series at its best. It branches out from its GTA clone of a predecessor and leans into the absurdity that becomes it's trademark but without everything becoming a joke. Stillwater is a fantastic, varied city and the missions and side games are much better here than the rest of the franchise. Customization is second to none.

SR3 is SR2 with better graphics, more polished gameplay and less if everything else. The game now rest entirely in absurdity to the point that nothing is serious. Steelport is boring. Customization is worse. The missions kinda suck. Still a fun game but it just doesn't compare to 2.

SR4 is very similar to 3, but it has now moved so past open world crime simulator that it feels less like watered down 2 and more like its own thing. I imagine people who only played 3 would probably like 3 more than 4 though.

I didn't rank SR1 because it really was just a less polished GTA clone.

I don't understand what 'everything else' is that sr3 has less of from reading this. The gameplay is better but the missions are worse? How so?

Like the actual mechanics of the game. Aiming, shooting, driving, etc. That is all better than SR2. The missions themselves in SR2 are still better designed and more varied. SR3 also has story "missions" which are just side games, which is super disappointing.

lol it's a bunch of BS, SR3 is a big improvement over 2 in a lot of ways.

People just liked 2 because it was better than 1, and they liked 1 because it was a more arcadey version of the GTA games.

1 is what we expected GTA IV to be if Rockstar had followed the San Andreas formula. It got some problem with the difficulty curve going up and down on some missions, but it is still pretty fun if you like San Andreas.
2 took everything from 1 and perfected it.
3 is "what if we turn the dial to 11?". It is crazy and fun, but many "purists" disliked this.
4 is "what if we take a new dial and turn it to 11 again?". One of the best superhero games lastgen.

So ignoring the using side games in the main story quest that SR3 does, SR2 has missions where you have to break into a nuclear power plant to steal radioactive material. Get into a sword fight with a gang enforcer. Survive a law enforcement assualt while navigating a tourist trap cave system. Burn a bunch of drug fields, slowly getting higher (and thus altering your vision and control) as you go. Rob a casino. It goes on and on.

On and I forgot the side games, which there are more of and they are more fun. Fuzz, a violent parody of cops, is a better side game than anything in 3 or 4.

Honestly from these descriptions it does sound like I may like 1 and 2 more than 4 (guess it depends how antiquated the actual gameplay feels)

I have been toying with the idea of getting a ps3

Two notes here: First Saints Row 1 is 360 exclusive.

Second if you do play 1 do it before 2. It is hard to go the other direction.

That said you can probably find a YouTube video of the important SR1 stuff and be fine.

I'll second this. If only because SR2 definitely has its moments of legitimate seriousness, like Carlos' death.

Just a very important note: the PC version of SR2 is a poorly-optimized, nigh-unplayable buggy mess. Thankfully, the Gentlemen of the Row mod fixes most of the problems, and also adds some cool (but optional) stuff.

While this is true, they're (slowly) working on a re-release that will be free for previous steam owners that will have have fixes, new multiplayer, and previously console exclusive content.

My problem with 2 is that it felt very similar to 1. And maybe the missions were better or whatever but I don't remember anything about them because the game kept crashing every time I launched a new mission (like, I'd start it, it would crash, I'd restart the game and it would play... then the next mission would do the same thing). So the whole thing just felt like a frustrating chore to play through.

edit: I had another "unique" glitch in Fallout 4 that broke stealth for me, and I've never seen anyone talk about that, so maybe I just didn't have luck with these two games.

Saints Row 2 is the closest to GTA:SA. It's not as good, but it can be a fun alternative.

SR4 is just balls to the walls embracing that it's a sandbox game and lets you have fun in it. If you're enjoying 3 you'll probably enjoy 4.

Little bit of history from an old timer:

Saints Row 1 & 2 when they were released had a pretty sizable fanbase of lets just call them 'white rap enthusiasts'. Think Malibu's Most Wanted. One and two had a strangely multi-ethnic gang where a white rap enthusiast could imagine themselves being "gangstah". When 3 basically went from being a half serious "gangsta" fantasy to being absolutely hilarious insanity they reacted by saying "yo dats wack!"

Well I'm enjoying 3 because it reminds me a lot of San Andreas. I don't mind how over the top it is at all, but I do think I'd like it more if it had more of a ramp up in the story, which it sounds like 1 and 2 did that and 4 is even more straight into the over the top action.

Like I'm already firing rockets out of helicopters in the prologue, it would be cool to do more of the street level stuff first
