Ignorance on aspects of culture is never something to be ashamed of. But there's a difference between neutral gear and drive, and in this case, the "drive" is being proud of it. Which, as you stated, you are proud of not knowing about Jake Paul. Which kind of proves my point. A disaffected lifestyle is just a disaffected lifestyle. You don't have a moral imperative because you aren't familiar with a thing, and aside from people who share a close-minded worldview, no one is impressed by people who trumpet a fanfare of glorious ignorance.

This is ridiculous. Theres a matter of degree, its not all or nothing.

Yeah, Im going to maintain that what you are ignorant of/disaffected from matters, a lot. Not all subjects are created equal.

Eating veggies a la carte does not a vegan make. You're still living a purposely disaffected lifestyle.

that's totally different. you're not in real life talking with friends. you're already on the internet, given that you're on this board. as has been pointed out, googling is a much more efficient way of getting an answer than typing up a "who?" post and waiting for someone to reply to you.

I don't think it's that different! I'm not posting on some huge impersonal reddit, I'm on board 8 and consider you guys friends, or at least acquaintances. It's true that googling is more efficient, but there are a lot of subjects (both in face-to-face and in online conversation) that I don't care enough to research independently, but would care enough to ask a friend a simple "Who's that?"

It's still not even remotely close to the same situation.

fair enough.

like i said, i personally don't like it if you come into my topic just to ask what the topic is about but that's a matter of personal preference, i guess.

Yeah, if we're getting into the subset of people who are not trolling, actually care, and really do just want to know who the person is, then we can go back to "it would have taken you less time to just Google it".

Wow, this topic is still going.

To address this point, it's not a matter of time elapsed; it's a matter of time spent. Although I might get a very literal answer immediately by googling, unless I want to legitimately research this person, I'm only going to get a very surface answer. "Dudeface is a renowned Youtube content creator known for pranks." That still doesn't answer why I should care, or why I might find him interesting, and determining that will require far more effort than I have invested.

But if I just say "who?" and someone answers, they'll probably tell me the relevant bits that someone walking onto the scene might want to know.

Googling something might be more efficient but I'm also fine in waiting for an answer to something I only have a passing interest in. I didn't need to know who Jake Paul was right away. I was content to let the topic play out and learn as I went.

I do feel like the Frank Zappa appreciation topic is different, because that's clearly for fans who enjoy his work. (And you provide informational links in the first post anyway! Anyone asking "who" after that is clearly a troll tbh)

But a breaking news topic is for everyone, not just people who have heard about the guy before, and it's full of people asking questions about the situation (do we know what he did? has he made any statement yet? could it be related to the rumors that ____?) So coming into that topic to ask a more basic question ("who's that") doesn't seem out of line.

I wholly appreciate this perspective. I think some of us are caught up in the weeds where intent plays a part though. You can often recognize someone who might be looking for actual answers vs. someone who is just trying to be disruptive.

Condescending who should be saved for when someone irrelevant says something stupid about someone who is currently relevant.

"James Woods says AOC is a COMMUNIST!"

"Who? Never heard of any James Woods."

"He was Hades in Hercules."

"Wasn't that like 20 years ago? What's he done recently?"

"Ummm I don't know. Something... maybe? KH3?"

"Yeah, don't see why he's relevant."

aside from the good point that i do provide information in the first post, i don't think the difference is that big.

to go with one of shadowdude's examples, i don't know who kevin durant is. if someone made a topic going "lol kevin durant was running around naked in a mall," i wouldn't enter the topic just to ask who kevin durant is. i'd conclude that i'm not the target audience for this topic. that's not to say it's completely unreasonable for someone to ask the "who?" question in that topic but i just wouldn't do it. it's another matter of personal taste, i guess.

that being said, i still disagree with the "privatebiscuit is obviously implying that you SHOULD care about who jake paul is!" point that tons of people are making. i don't see that at all. to me, it comes across as if he just feels like talking about a story related to jake paul. like how i want to talk about frank zappa or someone else wants to talk about kevin durant etc.

If I see your topic about someone, I'm going to have to at least determine if I do or not.

This is, of course, not unique to me, even though your post is basically telling me to butt out.
