Ever since he said New York did a good job with the coronavirus I cant take him seriously. Guy cant even wear his mask properly or follow social distancing. What a joke.

Not really an equivalent scenario. You're not factoring in the limited odds of actually contracting the virus in the first place on top of the mortality rate. And on top of that, the mortality can't factor in all the asymptomatic people or those with mild symptoms that never even get tested in the first place

I think it's more a matter that you don't understand the argument at all. If people are insisting that masks don't work and others are claiming that they do, the fact that somebody pushing for masks and distancing the hardest is seen neither wearing a mask nor distancing shows that even they don't believe their claims (thus supporting the idea that they don't work).

And acknowledging that something doesn't work doesn't magically make it a deepstate conspiracy. At this point it's clear that the measures being taken don't actually do anything -- because again, why allow massive gatherings of thousands of people at times if those same measures meant you couldn't let a handful of people go to church? -- and they're just being done for the sake of show.

Sure, it's not perfectly equivalent, but at least part of that discrepancy is covered by the fact that you're ~8 times less likely to roll four 1's than to be killed by Covid (0.077%), and I'm okay with saying that the rest of it is mitigated by the reality that "playing" is likely to entail forcing multiple other people to also play against their will, plus the fact that infection will stop being an unlikely outcome if everything returns to normal the way people like him want it to.

Basically, if you want to dismiss Covid because its mortality rate isn't all that high, you need to consider what those odds actually mean. Rolling double snake eyes is something pretty much anyone that's played any appreciable number of dice-based games has experienced. It's very uncommon and you probably won't see it on any given set of four rolls, but it definitely happens, and attaching such a dire consequence to it as death is enough to dissuade most people from rolling in the first place.

Buddy, I am anything BUT a parrot. Check yourself.

There were 249,590 cases of the virus in Italy. There were also 35,970 deaths.

Italy controlled the virus WAY better than we are, and had far more hospital beds etc per capita (we are already filling them up/maxing them out). This means if the virus fully breaks out in the US, we'll have a worse ratio of deaths to cases then Italy probably.

Just in case math isn't your strong suit, Italy had a 14.4 death rate.

If we have a 15% death rate in the US and eventually everyone gets it, that would be 47 million people or so who die.

It probably wouldn't actually be that high, I'd be amazed if it was over 20 million (just because alot of people will get it before hospitals are full, and after the main outbreak, and some people will just totally avoid contact with people, and others will have left the country or will do so as soon as they can again etc.

But yeah, it's not a .5 death rate, in general even if you don't over tax the hospitals and have a massive out break, it's still more like 1%, which could easily reach into the millions of deaths especially hitting the elderly hard.
