MLB's "no bubble, let's yolo this" strategy going swimmingly.

The Miami Marlins had 3 positive cases, had a team meeting and decided "yeah, let's play", played the Philadelphia Phillies, and today it turns out they're (Marlins) up to 11 positive cases. Both the Marlins' game against the Baltimore Orioles and the Phillies' games against the Yankees now postponed.

I was borderline on whether MLB could pull this off but didn't expect it to get this bad this quickly. Guess my instinct that the NBA being the only ones with a realistic chance of finishing their season might hold up.

Professional athletes are at zero risk from COVID. Getting herd immunity early will be a competitive advantage.

Season is not over. 2 games are postponed. Shit happens and it was always a possibility of postponing games. Why do you act like the season is over because an organization got positives?

I think people wanted to look into it more and not be like oh four black people in a row hanged? Must be a rash of suicides! Just off the cuff like you did. The worst thing an investigation does is yup it was suicide. The worst thing your do nothing approach is that a murderer gets away. And then only a literal psycho would come with a wide smile and be like looks like it was just suicide :D

But look who Im talking to.
Re-read the exchange. It was the exact opposite. I was the one who said you should wait for more details and you shouldn't assume people were lynched. This conversation pressed into multiple topics. Wang said it was likelier to be suicides. An argument ensued over that. I brought facts to support suicide was likelier while also maintaining we should wait for autopsy reports and more details.

You literally just described the behavior on the other side and pinned it to me.

But look who I am talking to. People who make wild claims to try and support untrue narratives because it is what they want it to be. Then can't even man up and admit they were wrong when they are.

Oh and let's not forget how just prior to the conclusions jumped on this being lynchings was people berating wang for jumping to a conclusion.

I didn't say it was over, but I definitely think that's where we're heading.

If the Marlins are at 11 positive player cases (+ some coaches) can they be expected to field a team that upholds competitive integrity in the next 10-14 days? Do they just postpone every game they play in that span? If they just pull in a ton of walk-ons so they can nominally put a team on the field but in reality is basically a AA team just to keep the gears turning what are you doing to the competitive integrity of the game?

I'm not sure what MLB does regarding this incident. I think there's a decent chance they try to power through rather than deal with the embarrassment of pulling the plug this soon and after the first major incident but there's pretty much no way this is the last time something like this'll happen.

Yes, they can still field a team. Or they can just play make ups later after quarantines if they are in playoff contention.

I referred to MLB in that context as the collective sport of baseball and not the league offices specifically. The MLBPA rejecting a bubble is dumb and they should be called out for it.

If they found it too inconvenient or too cumbersome due to the increased roster sizes compared to the NBA then that's a sign that maybe you shouldn't be playing the season if you're unable/unwilling to take the safety precautions.

In my opinion, the reasoning for them being against it was obvious.

MLB wanted 3 bubble areas, Arizona, Florida, and another I forget based on their spring training leagues and such. I think Texas.

However, the players were so much for more money that I think it is likely they turned this down because they wanted to try and maximize their money (hoping fans would be allowed) and for convenience (not being in the bubble itself).

That said, I can't imagine anyone thought there would be zero outbreaks all season. Just have to move forward using their plans they have in place for this contingency. Wait for 2 negatives on anyone who hasn't come back positive and move forward with the players negative and backups/AAA prospect call ups.

Still have no idea how 70% is based.

On my pre-wage increase last year rate? My post-wagw increase rate? My post wage increase this year rate? My highest quarter? My 2019 income divided by 52? Like? Lol. I don't get it.

In some of these scenarios it will be like $900 to get me to 70% wage replacement.

i don't think anyone knows how they're calculating it and won't until they release the text

Saw a WaPo article about it saying some in the GOP were talking about putting an income cap on it so presumably that implies it doesn't necessarily have one right now but who knows. CNBC articles from Thursday were speculating they might try to implement it in a flat payment like they are now using either average or median worker income (depending on what number they use that could mean anywhere from like $180-$300/week) but the reporting today that they want $200/week for 2 months while states somehow update their systems to accomodate whatever 70% system they decide on appears to imply it's not a flat payment to all but individualized somehow.

Seeing how the GOP is complaining about $600 being too high and wanting to slash it down to $100 or $200 I would have to imagine they cap it somewhere, and probably in a pretty draconian way but who knows.

Still feel like this ends up being all scrapped and the compromise deal with the House ends up at like $400/week.

I could see them agreeing to a 600 a week extension for 2 months while states upgrade system to a 70% system.

I don't think anyone is really against a % system (though I would argue maybe 80% is fairer), if it weren't for the computer system problems that Mnuchin himself said was an issue.

But, they could have already had them working on this in the past few months. This is just dumb scrambling.

Trump the democrat.

From the spokesperson for a pharmaceutical industry group:

The presidents plan to import policies from socialized health care systems abroad is disrupting our work [on Covid-19 therapies] and diverting our focus away from those life-saving efforts," the spokesperson said. "We remain willing to discuss ways to lower costs for patients at the pharmacy counter. However, we remain steadfastly opposed to policies that would allow foreign governments to set prices for medicines in the United States."

It's not a Democratic policy. Joe Biden would never support it. It's a socialist policy. Directly piggybacking off the work of countries with socialized healthcare. Thank you President Trump for doing more for the working class in 4 years than the Democratic Party has done since 1980.

I do think it is slightly disingenuous to frame it as "Bernie supporters" when Bernie himself has pivoted away from stuff like this. Like all power to the delegates but the man himself doesn't really factor into things or deserve any credit for this. As GMUN pointed out, many are still supporting Biden. The only reason to invoke his ghost is to get one last round of complaining about Bernie and the general progressive base.
