However, I'd like to take this time to interject with an announcement that I will be running a special guessing game list next Saturday, starting at 6 EDT, to commemorate all the users in VGMC (and BOST) over the years. Consider it my send-off to all of you after five years of hosting. This will be an extended standard list, spanning roughly six hours, so please drop in for the party as you're able. I'm too lazy to rank them right now, but wow! Five of Mycro's seven (non-support) nominations retired! That's nearly a third of the remaining field. Last year he only had one nomination that made round 3 (Caravon Stories' Raging Spirits), while the rest lost early. But yeah, it's an excellent set of retirees, probably even better than last year's (IMO). Eight I'd rate a 9+, and another three or four I'd rate an 8+. There's only one I'd rate below a 7, but that's only because I don't like the style of it... I think it's a worthy retiree, objectively speaking!

Rating stats (for the ~10 users who did ratings for tracks in this contest) are getting there. It should be ready tomorrow, I think. If anyone wants to send me any last minute adjustments, it's not too late! (either ratings or rankings are fine)

I think this is a fair approximation of how I'd rate this year's retirees. As you can see, it's clustered towards the "good" section, so at least I don't dislike most of the retirees. Though, to be honest, this year's list of retirees definitely doesn't seem as good as last year's for me. I don't have an entire list like this in my head for last year's retirees, but I know for a fact last year had more songs in the Great and Amazing categories than this year. I'm only really thrilled about the songs that made it to those two categories, but I do like plenty of the other retirees so I don't want it to seem like I'm being too harsh about them lol. In any case, congratulations to this year's retirees!

All in all, this is looking pretty dang good to me ! Only one song I dislike left, and a good percentage of songs are ones I actively enjoy! Hooray!!! Division B is mildly hecked though. Also that big vgmc tribute list thing looks real neat. And I'm glad I randomly returned last contest instead of this one or else things could've been kinda awkward & frustrating with regards to eligibility.

Since nobody has signed up for Saturday on the guessing game schedule, I've claimed that as well. So I'm running two Saturdays in a row. (Greedy bastard, I know.)

This Saturday's list is a compilation of one-off appearances from VGMC1-14. Because it's such a long list, I decided to tinker with the format, and rather than survival with extra lives, we're going to just go with a straight time attack. Personally, in spite of the volume, I think the list is doable in a modest amount of time. Especially so if some folks who have been around for the early years and remember the old lists decide to show up. So I'm plugging this here to see if some people who don't regularly frequent the games might be interested in playing a game tailored to all those tracks we never brought back.

From a nostalgia perspective, next week's list might be more meaningful if you had to pick between them, but that depends on which you'd rather look back on, the contest songs or the people who brought them to you.

I think we picked up a cool set of retirees! I'm happy for Mycro/Tox and KCF, as well as long-time fans of Blue Reflection and Pokemon. After two contests, I'd say VGMC 13 still has my favourite retirees, but I expect this year's to grow on me with time. My preferences even hold up by genre: Top retiree (Battle!! > Credits), Epic vocal duet (NWO > Endeavour), Cute girls Gust (Atelier x3 > TIGAR), FM synth (Demon Truck > YOKAI/Rude Buster), TCal (Servants/Crabulon > Filthy Mind), and visual novel (Innocence/Skyclad > Classroom). I guess VGMC 14 can have glitchy rhythm, because I like Credits better than Chocolate Missile?

Overall, this year felt more "dark/atmospheric/indoors" where last year was "bright/energetic/outdoors". Perhaps it was fated after we had the champion that we did!

I was hoping that was the case. Not only that, but NFUN's original vote for Rude Buster seems suspect.... it looks more like an anti-vote than a vote based on listening to the music. Then again, I just checked NFUN's ratings and he did rate Rude Buster higher than TIGAR. But I want to hear what was said on discord.

Oh, I have no complaints about NFUN's initial vote. I'm super literal and would have counted that as a switch to abstain but "vote for [eliminated song]" is a common enough vgmc joke that I can see it being dismissed just as that. Just usually it happens in the reverse order where the "real" vote comes second.

Same. I already had it as one of the nominations that I transferred directly from the "nominate for VGMC14" list to the "nominate for VGMC15" list. Luckily I liked its retirement round opponent enough that I was like "no matter who wins this, I want to nominate the loser next year", so I pulled out the list to update.

That and there was something in my most recent blind playthrough that I wanted to nominate next year.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is just the third game in VGMC history to have multiple songs make the bracket in its VGMC debut and have all of them retire that year, followng Ar Tonelico II and Mega Man 3, both of which went 2-for-2 in VGMC2. The only other game to have ever had a 100% eventual retirement rate with multiple songs (a status which Ar Tonelico II lost the very next contest and MM3 lost in VGMC5) is Ys Seven, which amazingly enough still has that status--Innocent Primeval Breaker took 3 tries to retire, appearing in VGMCs 6-8, while Desert of Despair got it on the first try in VGMC7, and we've yet to see another song from that game.

(There are 45 games that have only ever had one song in VGMC and it's a retiree, including 19 that did so on the first try. Four of them, including 3 of the first-try group, received their retirement this contest.)

Endeavour just might be this year's Revenger. I'm still happy about Partizan's performance... before the contest I would have never guessed it would do well.

Moonstruck Blossom, though... whoa, talk about dominating! I'm not sure how that happened. Midnight Lady is a lot weaker when extrapolated (or rather, compared directly) through The Filthy Mind as opposed to through Thermosphere. Maybe there was SFF going on? Or Thermosphere strenghtened as it progressed or something. Regardless, Partizans vs. Moonstruck should prove interesting.

Speaking of x-stats, this round we're going to be able to compare x-stats of the wildcards through two different paths! I'll do those calculations sometime soon.
