Do you like your voice?

I'm fine with my voice. It's not deep but also not very high pitched. Of course I have times when my voice can go in that direction but overall it's fine.

When I speak, the voice I hear in my head sounds great.

When I listen to a recording of myself speaking, it sounds absolutely nothing like what I hear and I don't like it. Oddly deep and frustratingly monotone even when I know damn well I wasn't speaking in such a way. Like, if I didn't know it was my voice that was recorded, I'd swear it couldn't possibly be me talking, it sounds completely alien to what I personally hear.

I frequently get comments saying I have a great radio voice. Recording lessons and posting them on YouTube for online teaching in the past months has forced me to listen to myself talk. I quite like my voice.

I'm one of those guys.

Yep.

The ones that thought they had a great voice for most of their lives.

I used to sing all the time! I sang at bars, I sang while cooking, I sang randomly when I woke up.

To me, my voice sounded GREAT!! My wife liked me singing, nobody ever said anything about me not having a great voice.

Then a few years ago, there was a singing app on my ipad, you could sing songs with other people. I did it, and then I heard myself singing.

I do not sing well.

I asked friends and they were like "Yeah, but your so enthusiatic" lol.

Nobody, in 40+ years, told my I couldn't sing.

I don't sing much anymore.

Prob has more to do with my place in life then the knowledge that my voice sucks, although I'm sure that would have factored in anyway.

I sang when I was happy, which doesn't happen much anymore. No more family, no friends where I live now, and I'm totally isolated down here in the basement. Kinda hard to find reasons to sing lately.

Suggest you read the first book, skip the second and third, and then read the rest.

Wish I had done it that way.

I read dune the first time when I was around 5 years old, I made it through dune, but it was only meh to me at that point. I didn't make it through the second book though.

Went back and read them all a few years later, enjoyed dune alot more (became one of my favorite books) but still wasn't a big fan of the second and I stopped midway through the third.

Was in my teens before I read the rest of them, which get quite good again after the third book (or did for me). Wish I had just skipped book 2 and 3 all together.

I know exactly how my voice sounds because it is exactly my father's. And I don't mean it kind of sounds like it, I mean that even my family members need to see who is talking to know which one of us it is.

That said, I have kind of a stoner surfer dude voice, so not a huge fan. Still, it is oddly relaxing to people so I usually make a good first impression without trying that hard.

I don't like it. My voice is deep and monotone sounding. I say monotone because I can't really hear my own accent when I talk. I know I have a pretty strong one because I'm from the Caribbean but when I hear my own voice live it all sounds like a drone. Other people tell me I have a sexy voice especially foreigners. They're like I love how you guys (islanders) talk.

That's because when you normally hear yourself talk, you receive both sound transferred through your ears externally by air conduction and sound transferred internally through your bones. This bone conduction of sound delivers rich low frequencies that are not included in air-conducted vocal sound. So when you hear your recorded voice without these frequencies, it sounds higher and different. Since your recorded voice does not sound how you expect it to, you dont like it.

This is similar to how we often don't like our own picture. We're used to see ourselves in a mirror, so the image we have of ourselves is mirrored. If you like combing your forelock in a certain direction, other people actually see it in the opposite direction. The same goes for imperfections such as moles, pimples and scars.

How can you be misgendered if you sound like a gay man? Sounding gay still implies that you sound like a man. Unless you're actually a woman, I don't see how you can be misgendered. Also, a voice can't sound gay, only an accent can. Gays who talk in an effeminate accent can actually sound not gay if they try, just like how a straight man can mimic a gay accent if they want. The gay accent and mannerisms are basically just replicating a type of female speech. Gays who adopted it during their development were subconsciously trying to act female because they felt more closely related to their female peers. The same goes for very tomboyish lesbians, their natural behavior is closer to a male one.

---

Paradoxically, when I was undergoing puberty around the time I turned 14, I actually liked my recorded voice more than the one I heard in my head. My voice was just getting deeper, it was when I could no longer shriek like a girl. Since my recorded voice sounded higher, I recognized it more than the one I was now hearing in my head. I hit puberty late and my growth spurt was insane. In primary school (6-12 years old), I was always in the middle in class pictures, i.e. half of my peers (both genders combined) were taller than me. On my first year of high school (12-13 years), many girls were taller than me. A year later and we were equal in height. Another year later and I finally exceeded them but only barely. By the time I reached my maximum height at 16 (yes, that fast), I was now among the tallest. My height is 182 cm (1 cm below 6 ft).

That's not how frequencies work. We as humans have trouble hearing frequencies that are too low or too high. The rich low frequencies I mentioned being delivered by bone conduction can't normally be heard. They can only be "felt". This is kind of like how most deaf people can still "hear" low frequency sounds. They reverberate in your body. You don't need ears to "hear" those sounds because our ears are incapable of hearing them. When you talk, your voice reverberates in your body and so you can "hear" those low frequencies. When you listen to a record of your voice, you can't hear those low frequencies.

Most deaf people can still hear sounds delivered by bone conduction. These people can actually hear themselves talk, but what they hear is very limited. They don't hear via air conduction, so what they hear is the difference between what you hear when you talk and what you hear when you listen to a record of your voice. Sound also travels in solids, and that's what bone conduction is all about.
