Try to keep debate centered around the Coronavirus itself. Discuss testing, outbreaks, trends, safety regulations, vaccines, treatments, personal experiences with the disease, or so on.

This again is the counter I use.

https://youtu.be/NMre6IAAAiU

As you can see in it today, South Africa and India have been moving up quickly in cases, in addition to some of the usual players like Brazil and USA.

A couple of people I have seen that tested positive recently are the Oklahoma governor, Russell Westbrook and Harrison Barnes, the Pac-12 commissioner, the Arizona Cardinals owner (I think).

We have yet to see anyone really famous succumb to the virus, which if someone did I think that the narrative to the every day person could change because it hits home moreso. However, famous people are getting the disease.

Israel wondering if schools opening caused outbreaks. In a blow to those who think reopening schools is a good idea.

On the flip side, Belgium has criticized not reopening schools by saying abuse of children is rising dramatically.

Masks have been made mandatory in shops within England starting next Friday. I was wearing a mask anytime I went to a grocery/convenience store anyway (outside of a couple of times, including today as I forgot to put it on before entering), so this doesn't really change anything for me individually.

Pretty well! They did better than a few of countries that had strict lockdowns.

"sweden did great because they're not the country that did the absolute worst in the world"? this is really the argument you're going with?

How do you explain that exactly if lockdowns are a magic panacea which definitely work?

Yeah, looking at that graph (assuming the scale is not really off between countries) whatever happened in Israel doesn't seem to be linked to schools, or if so there's something particularly off about how schools are opening there.

Because college football involves more players than soccer at closer average proximity than soccer.

It is exponentially harder to operate safely.

Soccer players are spread out along the entire field for much of the game.

Football players spend every play literally all huddled together trying to grapple with each other.

There's a pretty decent difference.

Like, neither should be happening, but equating the two is also silly.

A football team also has like 3 times the personnel (players, coaches, staff) as the average soccer team. Ballpark numbers of course. But just in terms of players, a soccer team dresses ~20 active players, while a football team dresses ~60 or so.

Professional sports are interesting to me.

I think there is an understanding that there is an element of "not safe" to them. But also that getting live sports off the ground and on TV could play a critical role in getting people to stay the fuck home. So I think there is definitely some merit in asking them to play at some risk to themselves if they are willing.

That said, college sports where the players are already being exploited should absolutely not be attempting to play right now.

The NFL is also likely too high risk to get off the ground but I expect them to make the least effort to make play safe.

I would assume all the other players that want to play are also going to be doing their best to try and make a career at the next level also.

Under your philosophy they shouldn't be allowed to attempt to make their dreams come true.

I mean, imagine how much money Joe Burrow would have lost if they didn't have a season last year.

I'd be surprised if college football goes ahead (or completes the season) purely because of the sheer number of players they would have to keep tabs on.

105 players per college (not including staff). 130 teams even if you restrict it to just top division. And you're dealing with unpaid college kids rather than (theoretically) more mature adults whose earnings depend on it.

I just don't trust college kids not to mess it up when you're dealing with that many.

ok I was trying to look up exactly who makes the decision for whether or not college football will happen and found this quote that maybe explains a different between college football and womens soccer

College football remains a four-touchdown underdog, thanks to individual campuses, academic requirements and the inability to take 13,000 FBS players and put them in a bubble. If the NBAs ability to play in a bubble that reportedly costs $150 million is being regarded as tenuous, the chances of college football being played in some recognizable form in the fall are similar to attempting to keep a candle lit while walking 10 miles in a hurricane.

there are too many college football players to keep isolated in the way theyre doing it for other sports

Muffin is honestly correct when he says college football is the most "republican" or "conservative" or whatever of the 6 major sports leagues people watch (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, NCAAF, NCAAB. If you include MLS for 7 its still obviously the most conservative). Also Notre Dame and Ohio State are pretty shitty examples against his point, as Notre Dame is a Christian school and people dont realize how redneck and backwoods Ohio is. Especially the southern part of the state and western parts.

I mean since social media revolutionized recruiting in 2007 as well, the most powerful schools have pretty much been entirely in the SEC (Bama, LSU, Florida, UGA, Auburn), Clemson (south carolina), Ohio State, and like the occasional Oregon or something, and Oregon had Nike bankrolling it.

http://www.thepostgame.com/blog/dish/201303/how-politics-correlate-sports-interests

Pretty interesting breakdown.
