Will you go back to movie theatres if it's now like this?

A promotional image for movie theatres in Canada and the US have released showing how the "new normal" will look in the times of COVID-19 as spread seating and less people and some with mandatory masks will now be the common when they open again late this month and July...and just as distributers keep pushing back high profile movies into August and the Fall leaving the summer season for the biggest bust in HISTORY!!

Landmark Cinemas, one of the 2 biggest theatre chains in Canada released a picture showing how people will be seated at their theatres as it shows people spread apart with less people inside. Canadian theatres have also NOT made masks mandatory given the low cases now in Canada where they have now been able to flatten the curve and cases have not been rising unlike the United States.

A stark contrast with the US movie theatres where attendees must now wear masks when viewing a movie except when eating but it's not sure how they will enforce the rules to be sure they are wearing masks unless employees come in to view the attendance every intervals.

Moviegoers will also see plexiglass behind counters at concessions and assigned seatings purchased in advance will be the norm as well with staggered showtimes to give people time to was the theatres.

Rising cases in the US means the movie release calendar will always be a work in progress as Tenet, WB's biggest summer title has been moved several times and now to August 12. Mulan, Disney's 200M franchise starter is now pushed to August 21 as even those dates are uncertain if cases keep rising.

Movie theatres have been suffering the most and are losing huge amounts of dollars with no new films and their survival is at a brink given these new restrictions and now no new movies being released by studios.

Word of mouth is no longer "was that movie good" but rather "how safe was it?" and "what was the sanitizer situation like?" as moviegoers will be cautious once they reopen fully

Will you still watch a movie in theatres if it looks like this?

So Canada doesn't use masks and their cases have gone down. The US uses more masks than ever and it only increases. What the fuck is in these masks?

I rarely go to packed theaters anyway. Have a max of 10-15 people and space groups out well enough (like well over 10 feet) and you might not even need masks while sitting.

So Canada doesn't use masks and their cases have gone down. The US uses more masks than ever and it only increases. What the f*** is in these masks?

Canadians have generally been more compliant with infection control recommendations, including wearing masks in many other situations (despite it generally not being mandatory), and Canada's governments mounted a much faster, more decisive response to the pandemic than the US' did. Even now, Canada's only very cautiously reopening in areas that are doing very well.

The US, by contrast, has suffered from a whole lot more problems with people disregarding recommendations because "muh freedom" and/or because they believe the whole thing is a hoax, was generally quite slow to implement recommendations and testing (and even now has a president suggesting that slowing down testing to help the numbers go down so the country looks better isn't an incomprehensibly insane idea), and is being significantly less cautious about reopening everything. It's very much not just the masks that differentiate the two countries' situations, especially where I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that Canada currently has a higher mask usage rate than the US.

I probably won't go until it's back to normal. Not out of any principle, I just don't go to the theater often. I went to see Sonic with my friend right before it left theaters, but I don't recall before that. Maybe Iron Man.

The fact that Canada completely disregards masks and the US allowed wide-scale social gathering in the form of "protests" kinda supports the hoax claim.

I'm not one of those "I won't wear a mask!" people, but I would prefer to not see a movie at all if I wasn't able to be completely comfortable and enjoy it without one. My house is just fine. Masks are good for being out as a necessity.

Depends. How will it work with the seating? If it goes back to "first come, first seve", then maybe. If there's still paid seating, then most likely not (unless I can get good seats), or on certain weekends when people are less likely to be there, (like Superbowl weekend).

Also, the mask thing is weird. I wouldn't constantly remove and put my mask back on to snack. I'd probably just let it hang...

The theater is dead at last in the west, although it may die in Japan as well which still has 99% of films delayed for 1 year or more, despite theaters opening before even Canada. I think these films need to be released digitally, only games don't have the luxury as most console games are 50 GB+ in size.

Are you okay, dude? You seem to be kind of coming unhinged lately, particularly regarding the intersection between BLM protests and anti-covid restrictions.

I can agree with this. Even before the pandemic, the only reason to go see a movie in theatres was it being a better experience than seeing it at home. Wearing a mask (which I would regardless of how mandatory it is, because duh) changes that dynamic and makes it less enjoyable, which means I'd rather watch at home.
