Do you have a problem with people on public assistance/welfare?

Principal Tramp, Deborah Morse-Cunningham, who is an employee at New Dorp High School in Staten Island and makes 130,000 smackers a year is coming under fire as Mayor Bill De Blasio is disturbed by her post where she made a post on "What is Privilege" and then made racial stereotypes against people of colour!!

She is still working there despite that lengthy comment she made which has since been deleted, along with her facebook after someone blew the whistle on her

In one of the lines it says "Privilege is wearing $200 sneakers when you've never had a job. Privilege is wearing $300 Beats headphones while living on public assistance. Privilege is living in public subsidized housing where you don't have a water bill, where rising property taxes and rents and energy costs have absolutely no effect on the amount of food you can put on your table"

She made the remarks referencing that people on public assistance use their money on expensive clothing and electronics while "cheating" the system

Her status was spotted by a parent at the school who then started a change.org petition to have her fired as it read "Deborah Morse-Cunningham, a longtime educator and assistant principal at New Dorp High School on the South Shore of Staten Island and has decided to use her platform and social media presence to post anti-black messaging during this time. She recently posted a rant to her public fb page, detailing vicious stereotypes and racial profiling directed at the black community. As someone responsible for the tutelage of our month, this is especially troubling and problematic rhetoric to say the least"

The petition now has amassed 9900 signatures as the petition states it leads them to question what kind of practices she's instilledin the culture of the school.

The school has a 49% minority enrollment with nearly 60% of students in ECONOMICALLY DAMAGED households.

The school made a statement that they stand against racism and schools must be safe and inclusive and said they are investigating on the teacher

Mayor Bill De Blasio said he hasn't seen the post but is "very concerned" and said no one in a position of authority should use racialy insensitive language especially from an educator

Her status as a teacher has not yet been determined but it's expected she's getting the hook..

Do you have a problem with people on public assistance?

"Privilege is wearing $200 sneakers when you've never had a job. Privilege is wearing $300 Beats headphones while living on public assistance." sounds more like questionable choices rather than privilege in the scenario of a person living on welfare.

If a person can work then yes I have a problem with my hard earned tax $ go to their lazy ass. My wife's sister is the perfect example of this.. she cries anxiety and blah blah to get free money so she can sit on her ass all day for nothing. She can work but "it's too hard".. pathetic.

But that actually is privilege. that's why I've always used my disability money sensibly.

Of course I do sometimes, that's just my personality - not a sweeping statement of all people on disability

The difference is that it's his money and not taxpayer's money.

I don't have a problem with limited welfare programs for people who actually need them. But it's fucking garbage in it's current state.

Either way, the quoted part of her statement is fine, but it sounds like there was a bit more to it.

Not at all, if you're deliberately gaming the system. Your rent is already already covered, your food is covered (several time over), your utilities are covered, on top of whatever other benefits you're getting.

She doesn't mention black people at all though, people are assuming she's referring to black people so it is those people making assumptions that's in the wrong, not her.

I fully agree with what she's saying, if you're on welfare and somehow able to afford luxury goods like that there's something that's definitely broken since the average person working their backsides off can't even afford to make those purchases.

She does not mention black people that is true.
However, she is talking about privilege as her main point and all over the news we hear about "white privilege"
Her mention of marching and protesting is also directly linked with the subject matter.
It would be incredibly naive to accept that she is not talking about "black privilege" from her twisted perspective.

Of note in the story is the fact that there ARE many people who game the system and should in fact not receive any money assistance from the government at all, of maybe just food stamps.
The majority of people who are on welfare though would most likely rather just have a job instead (or be able to work, in cases of disabilities.) Since they don't get enough to make a comfortable living.

As far as having $300 beats headphones, even someone on welfare, (without supplemental income from other sources) could afford one pair if they save money over time, assuming that this is the one luxury item they have and not "one of many". Regular people with jobs can save to buy a cruise, or a trip to Europe, or a swimming pool, etc... which cost several thousand dollars each.

Saving a few dollars here and there by making smart choices and being thrifty can save enough money to a music lover to afford expensive headphones.
A person with a job and no passion for music might think it's a ridiculous amount for headphones and exclaim "Even I can't afford something like this with a good paying job! HOW the hell can a welfare person afford these?!?" It sounds logical but, didn't you do to Disney at a $2500 price tag last year?
(Or get a new gaming PC, or buy a Gibson Les Paul, or "insert your own thing that you did but, conveniently forget about in order to be offended right now.")

Of course, maybe that $300 dollars could have been better used to enroll in a class to learn a craft that might get them a job more easily, or something to that effect but, it's not that outrageous when you think about it.

I went on about the headphones more, as I find it harder to explain expensive sneakers but, if that person runs a lot and also happens to not have a car, it might be more useful to them than we'd initially think? I don't know.

Also, there is the obvious fact that she is a teacher and might be talking about kids who's parents are on welfare but show up at school with these items. Maybe the kid works at the gas station after school, gives some money to their mom to help her stay on top of bills and saves the rest to buy cool gadgets because their a teenager and they actually deserve something nice for helping out. Maybe?

It is really easy to make judgement calls when viewing it solely from your own perspective and without having all the information.
I just did it myself, I know it and I did it on purpose to show the following point: We have become a people that often just assume the worst and quickly judge others in the harshest ways, without even considering that there might be reasons to explain things. It's everywhere these days and it sucks.

Yes, there are plenty of people who are dumb and nasty and are not worth the waste of oxygen they breathe but, we cannot lash out at everyone who does things differently than our own selves just because we think otherwise, it's so counter-productive.

Anyway, I've typed too much and no one will read any of it now, but it was fun and I'll just finish writing the rest of my book some other time.

That got me thinking about this little read that I found some time ago.

It's true that there are lots of people who abuse the system, automatically judging less fortunate people who have something nice is also no good. You don't know how they got it, how long they've been looking forward to it, or how much it means to them.

She's a tiny bit right, mostly wrong.

Having assistance is a privilege, but she's making a lot of assumptions about these people's circumstances.

"Gaming" the system while living in terrible conditions doesn't really make sense. I'm sure most of them would rather be an assistant principal.

It's true that many of these are rather poor choices even assuming things work like she says.

And this is why it's such a fantastic response. Cries about white privilege are almost exclusively referring to rich privilege and are solved by issues of wealth divide. She targets the actual issue at hand and doesn't devolve in to race baiting.

I'm sure they'd like to, but they'd also rather game the system than put in the work to become principal. She's just calls poor people lazy which brings us back to the evergreen topic of wealth inequality and the great unequaliser of exponential growth.
