I will say one of the things that makes voting for Biden a little easier for me is that he isn't going to be a 2 term president. I mean, I am not saying if he did a good job term 1 I would be against him term 2. But, I am saying that as far as undoing beneficial republican policies and his age definitely precluding him from a 2nd term, makes it easier to swallow if he does go after policies I think are good.

Trump would only win the very deep south, Wyoming, and maybe the Dakotas.

Biden is beating Trump, but he's nowhere near pulling off a Nixon/McGovern or Reagan/Mondale type map. There enough states farther right than Texas that Trump could lose Texas plus every state bluer and still win 20 states.

if this was by itself in a vacuum it'd probably end there but if this situation builds on itself at the same time as NK/SK are having their biannual spat on the DMZ and at the same time the West is busy with itself, it's worrisome as there's a limited check.

Well, they could view now as the president having too divided of a populace to be able to act. Which, if they deemed that, they would probably seize Hong Kong in completeness, Taiwan, and parts of India.

Been thinking about this a bit, and coming to the conclusion that banning chokeholds is probably the only policy proposal to come out of all of this that I agree with and think will actually help in the long run.

I'm not sure it will reduce deaths by police, but it will reduce social unrest, because chokehold deaths inspire a lot more cop-hatred than shooting deaths do. For a wide variety of reasons, but mainly centered around the fact that a decision to shoot a gun is a split-second one that in most cases happens once, while a chokehold death is a continuous decision to apply deadly force without pause over a period of several minutes.

There may have been a moment during the whole encounter in which George Floyd represented a physical threat to the officer such that possibly-lethal violence was necessary. But by "minute two of being choked" that moment clearly did not exist anymore. He was clearly incapacitated at that point, such that the decision to continue to apply possibly-lethal violence definitely looks like an intentional act of callous disregard for human life, regardless of what was actually going through the officer's mind (which I still suspect was probably not "I really hope this guy dies underneath me right now")

My suspicion is that "stone chucking and fisticuffs" is a line being pushed by both sides to allow a deescalation of the situation while saving face and avoiding blame on the international stage.

Which I hope happens, because this is probably the most terrifying thing I've read this year.
