Am I on some prolonged prank show? Did I literally watch a grown ass woman weep over not getting her fast food quickly enough? This has to be some sort of joke.

Because there's no way a grown adult who breaks down over a minor delay(One basically any regular has had to endure) is not only legally allowed to carry a lethal weapon, but legally allowed to kill if she feels threatened.

And of course commenters are making the excuse "She's scared because her food could be poisoned!", so the disproved Shake Shack incident has already done it's work(The irony is that any of these fast food workers could be working with Corona, but I'm guessing none of those people care how little they're still getting paid).

i mean realistically an absolute ban on choke holds doesn't make sense since cops are already allowed to kill under certain circumstances. putting choke holds on a category of guns would be a significant improvement but just not a ban.

if states get funding ideally they'd be able to put their budget to the other areas hurt by corona too. but that's basically a workaround to the fact that states are fucking broke right now.

qualified immunity, at the very least, needs massive reform or just be canned. and this is a weird one since technically that should have some bipartisan support. one of the few times Thomas has an opinion i like.

I think the implication is that giving the police the right to attack/beat/murder everyone who doesn't comply with their orders opens the door to excessive violence inflicted on the mentally ill, who may lack the faculties to comply in the manner the police want them to (and the same goes for inebriated people).

When he re-enters society, he's suing the police officer and the police department as a whole because he has actual damages there that will be more valuable than suing Trump for his stupid Tweet. It's very doubtful he can prove enough damages from that Tweet, and enough to be provable that Donald Trump's Tweet is the sole reason for any damages he would receive, especially given the dubious nature of that Tweet overall.

He'll be getting a tremendous payout from the police department anyway over all of this, likely at a high settlement to put this thing to bed. He's an old man that was presumably retired, and if he's in as bad of shape physically after this as it appears he is, I don't know how much impact on his everyday life that Trump's Tweet will actually affect him.

Threats he gets as a crippled old man who will probably need assisted living now, from the report? He won't be online or anything, and he likely won't even be going outside very much now. I don't think he's going to get enough threats to actively hurt his quality of life.

I think what happened to this man is horrible, and Donald Trump's tweet is positively ridiculous and idiotic, but I think it's unrealistic to think he'll get sued for defamation over it given everything else. Do you think he's going to want to testify in his shape about why he thinks his life has been harmed because of Donald Trump? Lawsuits are exhausting and Donald Trump's lawyers are just going to bleed out this man's money, likely the money he got from the police department settlement, and it's far more realistic that he's going to be told by any lawyer it's not worth it and to just save the money he has for his family and loved ones and to live the best quality of life he can with it.

The settlement from the police would come from the city. Cities settle more police claims than you'd believe, actually.

I'm not as familiar if the individual officer would be on the rope for any settlement deals, but I feel like he wouldn't be protected enough to not be forced to pay.

Is there any remotely feasible way to settle lawsuits against the police and not have at least some tiny part of the settlement come from the plaintiff's taxes? If the money didn't come from the government, it would come from the officer who got their salary from the government.

If I had to guess, the officer is likely protected by the union in most cases so usually the union wouldn't allow it to be taken from his salary (presumably he'd have to pay some kind of sanctions to the city though), but this case seems atypical because it was so out of line that it resulted in the officer being discharged from duty, so I don't think the union can protect him from being sued as an individual.

I think it's a mistake to characterize it as some weird outrage mob getting "up in arms" and not just a bunch of deserved criticism that happened to go viral. Why even complain about the complaining if you understand why it happened.
