As much as the involuntary transformation tends to be the better known deal, controlled transformation tends to be better for narrative purposes (and is truer to the original mythology anyway), so it tends to be the more common version in stories. Logically there'd be no reason for a werewolf to revert on death, but some movies and tv series do that to make the death more poignant based on the human side.
