No, the arc the manga is on now is the one right after the anime.

I need to reread it. I was incredibly frustrated whenever a new chapter would come out over the last several years since the last few chapters have practically been novels, with enough text to fill a volume of manga on their own. May not bother me as much now.

If it's the sub-arc I'm thinking about I also recommend TC reads it standalone if he doesn't want to read the rest of the arc.

It's a very, very good fight.

Episode 120... I'm starting to see what people meant by the narration. I think most of the dialogue was from the narrator. Which might have been true last episode, but maybe it was more apparent here because the last one had a flashback. It's not bad, the English narration at least is quite captivating. Maybe in subs it is more annoying?

The last shot of Zeno and Netero sweating while the King calmly walked between them was very good. In fact everything from when Pitou arrived at the scene with the King and Komugi was very interesting to watch!

fun fact him and kurapika's only appearances in large stretches of the manga are some meta title pages asking when it's gonna be their turn (which shows togashi still considers them main characters but...)

Episode 113.... I can feel it. I truly believe Gon's transformation is coming soon.

They made a really big deal out of Killua attack those two ants before running back up the stairs. That whole sequence was super weird, if they didn't point out the fact its SUPPOSED to be weird I wouldn't have thought anything of it. Just Killua clearing the way for Ikalgo. It's almost like the story needed a reason for Killua and get separated from Gon, but couldn't think of a GOOD reason.

Chimera Ant time is a trip.

yes all of this is happening in a ridiculously short timeframe

It is very silly that these people have normally-paced conversations in what we are lead to believe are seconds. These characters move and think at superhuman levels. It's part anime trope but togashi also takes it somewhat seriously.

By the end of yu yu (manga) the characters can play a game of rock paper scissors while disarming guards in multiple rooms in the span of 5 seconds.

Hot take: Hunter x Hunter would have been much better off if it didn't try so hard to explain the rules of its combat system.
Also I know this is going back really far but I just can't understand this opinion at all. The way they go so intricately into the combat systems is one of my favorite things about the show. I just love the nitty gritty stuff like that.

Nah HxH's biggest problem is that it can't just let go of characters from one arc to another.

I. e. Spiders and Zoldycks don't HAVE to appear 2/3 of the time like they do.

The cast keeps infinitely expanding and that slows down the pacing that's already very slow due to Togashi's breaks.

Current arc is basically out of control. You have Kurapika, Leorio and another 10 zodiacs; Beyond, Pariston, Ging and their group; Spiders, Hisoka, 14 princes, their mothers and their most promiment guards, the king, 15 nen beasts and the 6 guys Kurapika hired. Also 3 mafia leaders and some of their henchmen. Granted some of those characters seem to be reserved for the next part of the arc but there's still a lot in the current arc, and Kurapika alone will usually fill an entire chapter worth of dialogue/monologue.

The explanations are often long and drawn out and boring themselves, and the story doesn't actually follow the rules in any way that feels meaningful anyway. Though, in a by-the-book sense they of course do follow the rules--I guess the real issue is that the limitations of the combat system don't come across to the viewer as limitations because they're so arbitrary and are frequently twisted beyond recognition anyways.

And like, I'd rather they just don't explain anything then fail to develop a very intricate system. If they're fighting each other with the power of friendship then that might be kind of dumb, but at least it's quick to explain and doesn't leave me with the severe sense of cognitive dissonance that numerous moments in this series do. I like that the battles are strategic which probably is in part due to this, but I'm not at all convinced it's entirely dependent on the complexities of the system.

I feel like the rules for Nen were quickly broken, things like your class didn't really matter, and it really just boils down to "stands without the stands". But even more confusing than stands, because at least stands (usually) limit you to a single power.

Yeah, I'm not sure I ever truly wrapped my head around classes. I think the one rule that does hold true and is worth remembering is that the more restrictions you pile on to your Nen the stronger it gets.

Hmmm I'm not sure I understand the complaint.

The classes thing just means there's a check and balance to abilities. Like a fighting game. Close range fighters won't have powerful long range moves and really quirky support type "stands" will have lots of limitations or still leave the user itself fairly weak.

Tbh I really like this concept. Nen power depends on the affinity you have with the thing you are doing, whether you are using the correct type, amount of aura and restrictions you impose on yourself. Under those 4 rules, everything is possible. It's a good system.

I guess the problem is that characters with enough aura to do impossible things show up way too often. Or powers that push the boundaries too much. Though based on what is usual for shounen I don't think HxH is any worse.

Episode 116 was really good! Gon's character is truly being tested here. What an interesting way to tie all of these plot threads together. Just three problems:

  1. This FURTHER denies me seeing Gon's transformation, because....
  2. I know Gon fights and transforms while fighting Pitou. So this must mean Pitou breaks her promise... stupid cat
  3. Now they have to wait an hour... that will literally take 100 episodes the rate this show is going. There aren't enough episodes LEFT for them to get there!!!!!
