Okay I platinumed. You were right that pride and joy was pretty weak. The hardest fight was somehow Leviathan.

Not Bahamut? With Megaflare basically being instakill?

Also, what was your party? I had Barret/aerith/tifa so less concerned with Leviathan flying around...

Barret, Cloud, Aerith.

Bahamut never got his megaflare off. Though, when I beat him in the VR he did get it off but Barret and Cloud were able to live it with a manawall. It does like 8500 damage, but Cloud has 9999 life for me and Barret like 7900. They both had half health after the mega flare and I think I just arose Aerith right after in the VR, or maybe she had reprieve.

Nobody died in bahamut or pride and joy. One person died during Leviathan. That was it the entire run.

The one line that seems so out of place in this game is when Aerith says "Since I am so generous" when talking about giving herbs to the orphanage.
She's a god damn 1%er with a mansion and massive garden. It shows how her cuteness comes from her power and status more than her own self.

I felt it was meant to be a joke or sarcasm, but having heard her say it 3 times now... I don't think the voice actor succeeded in making her not sound serious with that line.

Summons were great because they didn't muddy up the gameplay at all. They were occasional spectacles and that's it.

Admittedly, summons would be more interesting if using them was some sort of trade-off...but then many players would have avoided them entirely, and that would have been a lost opportunity for nostalgia.

For example when re-playing OG FF7 I basically never equip summons anymore, even though I have fond memoreis of them--I don't use them because equipping them hurts important stats, and using them costs so much mana, and also they're so tedious, and also they don't really feel that powerful anyway, and also they're limited use per fight IIRC.

So if it was a trade-off like that in this game, I probably would have strategically avoided them entirely once again, and that kinda would have been a bummer.

So yeah, I agree with foolmo, I like them how they are, just kinda fun to see and not terribly important.

Yeah that how I end up in FFX too, even though that game has a super good balance with summons imo. It's just too tedious to use them, so I don't.

It's cool that here you don't have to think about them at all.

I rarely use summons in FF games as I don't see the appeal and they typically have long ass animations or slow you down. I think I basically used them in FFX to avoid damage.

So yeah I like the implementation in FF7R. Used very sparingly and didn't slow down anything.

Started the original. Beat Midgar in 5:23. Some things I had forgotten: Cloud still talks to "himself" when falling to the church. Wasn't sure if that was added in the Remake. Heidegger's role is super minor. Rude doesn't show up until Shinra Building. And Wall Market is just too weird. And now instead of feeling Remake was padded, this one feels way too rushed.

There's plenty of non-summon ways to beat Ruby. Mainly dazer abuse and/or brute forcing by the defense using hero drinks or relying on fixed damage from like Lucky 7's + Comet 2 or ???? Enemy Skill or you could probably do it by throwing a ton of gil at him. Not sure if I'm forgetting one.

Everything in the original game was perfectly brisk without feeling rushed and I'd take the 2 screens to get to Reactor 5 over the brutal Chapters 5 and 6 they put us through in the remake 99 times out of 100 (with a 1 time margin of error)

I keep wanting to come back to this for a hard mode playthrough and the platinum trophy, but some of the chapters kind of drag on a little too long. CH17 in particular before the boss rush at the end was just straight up a bad time for me gameplay wise, and I don't really want to have to deal with that again.

I've heard that the speedrun skips entire chapters completely, I wonder if that'd be possible to do in a regular run, or does the game not count it as beating a chapter for the hard trophy?

Essentially what you do is walk through those barriers that occasionally pop up. You walk sideways to them and then sprint through. Ive seen speed runs do it before.

i would doubt itd help on hard though. The completion trigger is at the end of the chapter, and you straight up skip that. I could be wrong though so good luck if you try it out! The skip itself looks pretty easy.

(I think its only for two chapters though so I dunno how much it would help)

Skip all the cut scenes. It probably cuts the game basically in half. Depending on your dress situation, you might be able to skip side quests also.

lol, considering the alternate path to Wall Market throws the "caution" barrier, if you can "get through" that... no arm game.

I guess the question is, would you have to go through the arm game in chapter 13 - which I can tell you, from my experience having suffered through this, there's no way to access the lab other than through the collapsed expressway. Despite the game throwing up Caution stoppings throughout the game, they don't stick one there. You can run all the way down and through Wall Market, and round to the Sector 7 park, only to be met with solid concrete preventing any passage to where you need to go.

I imagine the game just has the ladders already "down" in Chapter 13 assuming you went through the game already in Chapter 9... but maybe not...!

Interesting about the speed running stuff, because I didnt see any pause menu tricks. This was like three weeks ago or so I watched my last speed run so tech probably has already advanced since then.

Not sure what the general consensus on B8 but thought I'd add my two cents.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game from start to finish. The pacing was generally good, the music was awesome in places. The only thing I could really gripe about is the battle mechanics were maybe a little too convoluted. I dont think I got the most out of it.

I liked the pitstop areas where you can take a breather and do some side quests. If anything, more side quests please? (I'm a side quest kinda guy).

I found hard mode a step up without being unfairly difficulty.

Also with regards to the ending: If I wanted to play a carbon copy of the original, I would have just played the original. I'm glad that they have mixed it up and thought it was a clever way to do so. OK yeah, some of it didn't make sense to me, but i still liked the deviation.

The counterpoint to this is that this game showed how awesome a copy or near-copy-with-upgrades (like Wall Market) can be. It's not just a choice between lego PS1 graphics and nice modern graphics, but a totally new and refined experience that the original just cannot match at all.

So when it the crazy twists come in this game, it doesn't make people worry about ruining the PS1 game, but about ruining what this game and the future parts could have been if they just stayed pure.

I am personally optimistic about how they will handle the next parts, after seeing how masterfully they changed things here. But I can't argue against the fear that the future games are ruined.

Beat all chapters on hard aw yeah.

I got incredibly "unlucky" and it made the final Sephiroth fight like ten times harder than it needed to be. Catastrophe actually KO'd two of the whispers, and it lead to Barret being in my final party over Aerith. She had my cure all and is all around better equipped. I wound up losing once because Barret didn't even have revive or heal. Luckily Tifa + instant limit break item + haste wound up carrying me almost by herself. I don't like that I can't just pick my party there at the end.

Now I just need three more dresses and one more weapon skill for the platinum. I somehow wasn't paying attention and didn't realize I was missing one until just now!
