If I wanted to play a carbon copy of the original, I would have just played the original.The counterpoint to this is that this game showed how awesome a copy or near-copy-with-upgrades (like Wall Market) can be. It's not just a choice between lego PS1 graphics and nice modern graphics, but a totally new and refined experience that the original just cannot match at all. So when it the crazy twists come in this game, it doesn't make people worry about ruining the PS1 game, but about ruining what this game and the future parts could have been if they just stayed pure. I am personally optimistic about how they will handle the next parts, after seeing how masterfully they changed things here.
