I'm new to this so forgive me if my choices seem a little basic, but I've decided to go with either one of these two machines based on their price points.

Should I get an
MSI 17.3" GL75 Gaming Laptop($1269.00)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti
6GB
2.6GHz
512GB SSD
16 GB Ram
1920 x 1080

or a Lenovo 15.6" Legion Y540 ($1299.00)?
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060
6GB
2.6GHz
1TB SSD
16 GB Ram
1920 x 1080

Not at all laptops are equal

Are you going to be away from a power socket for more than 3-4 hours?

Why?

Gaming Laptops aren't worth it. They tend not to have a long lifespan and will slowdown in a year or two.

Nope, I don't normally take my laptop outside of my apartment.

I have a shitty laptop from 2014 so I'm in need of an upgrade anyway.

For $30 you get an RTX and half a TB of storage?

I'd take the second tbh

So I'd recommend we go a bit cheaper. You're dealing with the new PS5 and Xbox coming out this year so minimum specs are gonna take a pretty big jump.
You can get a reasonably "okay" laptop for 800 that could probably last 3-4 years at low-high settings at 60fps

You got an idea of what laptop from 2014?

Get the one with the better cooling system. Or just get a desktop PC if you're going to keep it in your apartment anyway, it's just so much better and you can upgrade the parts along the way instead of replacing the whole thing every 5 - 6th year.

The Lenovo does look like a much stronger choice. Reading some reviews, the biggest complaints are that the design of the case make it hard to keep clean in some places (there are usually ways around that if you just get creative) and it doesn't have an SD card slot.

So on that note make sure you're reading what sort of slots it has and if it suits your needs. Lack of an SD card slot shouldn't be a deal breaker even if you're constantly photographing/videotaping, just probably means you need to buy an external reader (or just plug the device into your laptop, think most of them support that these days).

If you're buying a GAMING laptop, why would you go with the one that has the weaker GPU? Go with the Lenovo.

screen size is what makes up the price difference but yeah, laptop 2 is definitely the better choice since you can always hook it up to a TV or monitor.

Theyre both going to be mobile versions of an i7. Thats the 2.6GHz spec he listed.

Aye. Looking at Lenovo Canada with comparable specs that he listed gives me this spec:

9th Gen Intel Core i7-9750H (2.60GHz, up to 4.50GHz with Turbo Boost, 6 cores, 12MB Cache)

I haven't pulled the trigger on either one yet, but I'm leaning towards the lenovo but my friend keeps dogging me about the hardware breaking. (He has a lenovo and his latches snapped after two years).

He's really pushing me to buy a Razer Blade but I just can't justify spending that much money on a laptop (at least $1500 before tax). I might look at a stealth but then I'd have to buy extra memory.

I open to suggestions. I really want something that has enough fire power to take me into next Gen but not break my bank. Budget is around 1200 before tax

For what it's worth, I bought an MSI a little over 2 years ago and it has been absolutely fantastic. I have a rather poor opinion on Lenovo laptops as I've owned 2 in the past and they both were pieces of crap that constantly had hardware problems. One had bad latches like your friend's, and the other seemed like every port and jack and drive on the thing broke at least once. But neither of them were from their gaming lines, so take it with a grain of salt like you would any personal experience stories.

Either way, don't listen to the idiots who keep saying "it'll break in a year." How long it lasts is entirely down to how well you treat it. Make sure you're getting a really nice carrying bag if you ever plan to take it anywhere outside your apartment, though. Proper padding and room for any accessories (mouse/pad, adapter cords, etc) are an absolute must.
