White supremacists have a new code for the n-word. Its jogger a direct reference to the death of Ahmaud Arbery, the young black man who was shot dead in February while he was running in a suburban neighborhood in Georgia.

Over recent years, online extremists have been constructing a shared, private language that they use to dog-whistle in public, online arenas without having to worry about getting banned for hate speech. Jogger is just the latest example.
These extremists often latch onto brutal, fueled crimes against people of color, lionizing their perpetrators in the hope that they might inspire future attacks. Hate-motivated mass shootings in Charleston, El Paso, and Pittsburgh, to name a few, have all lit up the far-right ecosphere and galvanized the movement. That same process is playing out around Arberys death, even though investigators are yet to come forward with a motive.
In the twisted, putrid world of white supremacy, those who murder and maim blacks become folk heroes, said Brian Levin, who leads the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino. Whether its the Klan, their support for George Zimmerman, or even Dylann Roof.
The McMichaels told police that they chased Arbery in their truck because they thought he was responsible for burglaries in the Satilla Shores neighborhood, and planned to make a citizens arrest. When they confronted him, they claimed that Arbery attacked them, a struggle ensued, and the younger McMichael pulled the trigger on his shotgun, firing three shots in total. Arbery was struck in the chest twice, and then staggered before collapsing in the street.
The McMichaels are claiming self-defense.
The investigation into the February 23 shooting is ongoing, and the Justice Department is reportedly weighing possible hate crime charges. The fact that the McMichaels werent charged until May months after the shooting has prompted widespread outrage over what many see as prosecutorial bias. And Arberys parents have called his death a modern-day lynching.
In recent days, white supremacists have posted jogger under pictures of Obama or articles about crime involving African-Americans. Theres a meme circulating of a black man running, with the words Joggers Will Be Shot. The McMichaels, meanwhile, have been called white heroes on 4chan. Theres a meme going around of a cartoon version of Travis McMichael, with the caption McMichael, Defender Against the Eternal Jogger. They photoshopped the McMichaels mugshots to make them look like theyre smiling, and wearing tuxedos.
Levin added that the fact that Arbery was killed and that white supremacists are glorifying his assailants should come as no surprise. Its got deep roots in the history of racism in America.
Forty years before Arbery was killed by Travis McMichael, 34, and his father Gregory McMichael, 64, in broad daylight, an avowed white supremacist murdered two black joggers using sniper fire in Missouri. Back then, white supremacists would refer to a running ****** target, said Levin.
The idea of running blacks out of town, running them down and lynching them because theyre rumored to be come sort of criminal threat, has a long history that goes back to slave patrols, said Levin. Each generation has its own incarnation, and thats whats so awful and painful about this. But also highly predictable.

There is a difference between acknowledging it and pretending it's automatically racist and reacting to it like it's a slur with a history

Is jogger racist? No. Can it be used as a racist term? Yes. Does this mean if a black guy is jogging down the road and I refer to him as a jogger that I'm only doing it because he's black? No. Does it mean I'm racist if I call a black guy walking around whistling the tune to Match of the Day a jogger because he's black? Yes.

People are stupid. That's completely true. But if you react like the okay symbol or jogger is now a racial sign/slur by default, then you're part of the problem of giving more power to racists.

It's not fair that people are stupid and overreact but dogwhistle racism is still racism. And letting them think they've somehow won by creating a new racist term that regular folks don't know about just gives them more power. On the other hand, reacting like it's a new racist term by default also gives them power. Balance it. Just be prepared for the soccer mom types to freak out regardless.

i think it's perfectly possible to acknowledge that bad people use seemingly innocuous terms for the purposes of coded racism (See: this, the intentionally misspelled version of 'didn't do nothing', things like 'he was a good boy with a bright future!' whenever a black kid gets murdered) while also not thinking the term should be abandoned by all not awful people forever more. the refusal of reactionaries to acknowledge nuance in these discussions is v tiring

But to be honest when it comes to "jogger" I can't really think of a context where it would be racist. Like even if it's a black person jogging and you're saying "hey let's head over to that bench where that jogger is passing by right now" like it's not a statement about skin color it's someone is jogging so they're a jogger.

Thing is though, jogger is gonna be the "dindu nuffin". Anytime something like this happens, racists strive to pick some word or phrase related to it to shove it as a new racial slur or way to mock black people.

So yeah 99% of people in the world is using it right: describing someone jogging and shouldn't have any issue with it being mentioned that a bunch of racist are trying to use it as a codeword for a slur.

Context should matter. And anything can be used as a slur in context and the actual meaning of what the person is doing should be what we are concerned about. But context absolutely does not matter in practice most of the time. People are getting blown up for shit out of context all the time and people are saying offensive shit in context without using any specific words all the time.

Like remember that scene in Princess and the Frog where she was getting discriminated against because of her race when trying to get the money to open her restaurant? They never called her a slur (it's a Disney movie for kids) but the way they spoke made it obvious they were being bigoted toward her. That's how context works.

No one accused racists of being bright, although I argue it's less about shame and more about getting away with shit. Just look at the disingenuous racists on any given forum.

Dog whistles take a while to be discerned, but as with all communication not under crypto, it leaks into common vernacular. The mongrels on /pol/ are probably the first to leak, but there are plenty of sites like that. Facebook groups, racists on youtube, funnyjunk, reddit. Media travels fast.
