After working on this thing for about three and a half years, the game is finally in the can and out!

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1256520

The gist is that King Fatass has declared all the world's food his, and steals all the reserves from a tribe of cultists next door. Too hungry (and too cowardly) to fight, a plan is hatched: Resurrect a skeleton slave to venture to Castle Fatass and steal the food back. Oh and kill King Fatass and his goons while you're there!

The food acts as currency too, so you as the player can choose how much to return and how much to spend for yourself at the shops. Returned food is stored and can be used during the game's second mode "Old School", which is more of a timed attack with a special shop to buy things right away at the start.

Thanks for hearing me out, here's the trailer:

Supposedly the Switch is very developer-friendly and the dev kit is more affordable than some kits out there. I saw this with no firsthand knowledge or experience, however

With how many super cheap games I see on Switch that had what seems to be very little work put into them, I think it must be very easy to port things to the Switch. Nintendo has also done a 180 from their old days and approves what appears to be most titles on their digital store.

That's good to know, I wouldn't have to change the villain's name from King Fatass haha. That was the original name for this one but I figured a... ahem, TON of people would get all mad lol

Congrats man! Great work, it looks fun! :)

If you're interested in Switch, from experience I can say Nintendo is very willing to look at all applications and it seems pretty easy to get approved these days. The dev kit's easy to work with and it isn't insanely expensive like some other consoles (but not quite an insignificant amount either)

Thanks, Sully. I appreciate the nice words. How does the Switch kit work exactly? Curious: If my game has a single folder with the exe and then (for externals, created upon save) a numerical array, and 2 lists that are kind of like notepad files. Then the ini for the option saves and unlocks. Everything is in one folder. Do you just move everything over onto a special dev machine for testing? I have no idea how that'd work.

I think it depends on how you developed your game. Is this a custom engine or did you use some framework like GameMaker? An exe built for Windows is not just going to work on the Switch by copying it over. I assume if you're using some framework you'd have to look up the documentation for building a Switch-compatible version of the game. You need to sign up with the Nintendo developer program first anyway and I think they have information on that site as to how to acquire a devkit

Basically everything he said ^^^ (Snoop is that you??), it didn't even occur to me to ask what you built the game in since almost everyone uses Unity or something similar these days lol. The popular frameworks all have ways of exporting to the dev kit, but if you built it on your own, I assume it's gonna be waaay harder

How did you get Nintendo to look at Switch applications? From my understanding they have it easily accessible for Wii U and not switch.

Personally since I was already accepted for Wii U I actually didn't have to go through the normal process, so I could be wrong... I was under the impression they've always been taking Switch applications (https://developer.nintendo.com/register) but in the first year or so they were much stricter about responding to them.

I can't check without making a new account, but as everyone else says there's been a lot of crap on the Switch shop so I assumed it's opened up a lot.

It's made with Clickteam Fusion 2.5. Kind of like a GameMaker type of product. It's originally designed for people who don't want to bother with coding, however I'm kind of in a unique spot because I had a lot of experience with coding BASIC and VB6 for a very long time (of course that was also a very long time ago!)

Nothing too interesting or earth-shattering. I'm a regular dude who goes to work at a normal job and basically spends all my free time making games on the side. I've been at it to some degree since 1987, but haven't really hit the 'big time' or anything I guess unless you count when I first discovered Steam in 2015. I don't answer to any higher ups that make me do ridiculous crunch but the way I am it's probably almost the same thing haha.

For the most part I do all aspects of game making myself. So the program / story / art / and music. There's a couple exceptions here and there (ex. I only did 2 pieces of music on my roguelike Equin: The Lantern). Lately I've been writing music using real instruments for my stuff, which sounds like it'd be jarring to see pixel MS Paint graphics w/ distorted guitars and drums that sound like they were recorded in a garage (they kind of were!)

Maybe the best story I had was I had worked on Hasslevania 2: This Space for Rent for a total of 9-1/2 years before calling it quits and moving onto something else. That kind of sucked, but it's a good life's lesson and I'm glad it's way past me now.

Ah Clickteam Fusion, okay. Don't know much about it but in my limited Googling, it seems it doesn't export to Switch itself, and the only easy options are working with Clickteam or other third party companies to port it for you. But of course that likely costs a lot of money... Small reddit thread from a few days ago about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/clickteam/comments/ge87jr/how_can_i_put_my_game_on_nintendo_switch_switch/

TC I think your game would be a great fit for the Nintendo Switch and its audience.

In clickteam fusion you can build to two modular formats: HTML5 and flash. No support for Nintendo Switch, but you can get around that. It's not that complicated and I think you should give it a shot.

Porting an entire flash engine is a moderate task that doesn't sound very fun, so what you could do is port your game to Unity, an engine that supports building to Nintendo Switch (Or Xbox, or PS4, or anything relevant really)

Start by;

Build your game for flash
Use this plugin for Unity to run your game in Unity
https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/animation/gaf-free-flash-to-unity-13593
(This plugin does look like it only works on older builds of Unity, and IDK if older builds will build as easily to the Nintendo Switch)

Gauge how well the game runs. Will this run well enough on Nintendo Switch hardware? 60 fps? No latency?

If not you can look at other options such as running it as HTML5 in Unity, which could be as simple as finding a browser plugin for Unity.

Once it's building for unity, and at a reasonable performance, you can get a Switch devkit and easily build it for the Nintendo Switch.

And message me/reply if you need help. Also does your game have a fullscreen option?

Pff, who needs to give these shmucks money?

Well, maybe if a Unity flash player runs like shit. Unity and flash, two words that should never be used in the same sentence.

Nuts that's pretty expensive from what I hear. They don't even list prices (I've asked before for something else). It's like that old adage, "If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it!" Haha

Thanks for your assistance anyhow, Sully. Good luck to you sir!

I agree normally lol, which is why I'm doing my own ports. But I don't like the sound of a Unity flash player... and third party plugins don't always work when exporting to consoles unless the plugin put in extra work to support it. Guess it's worth looking into though -- but checking yourself requires getting a dev kit, so it's a gamble.

Don't worry, I'm sure after the expensive upfront payment they'll only take 90% of the profits after release! (Not a fan either clearly, but hey, it's an option at least :P)

No problem man, good luck to you too!
