Nowadays with these one turn kills, pendulum, xyz, synchro, link monsters, yada yada, every card having an effect nowadays that chains into someone special summoning their entire deck

There are good and bad metas from every era. I love old yugioh, but Pendulum Magicians are probably my favorite archetype to play.

i also love Harpies, which only became fun during the XYZ era. >_>

although maybe its rose tinted glasses, mirror force, pot of greed, harpies feather duster and raigeki are hilariously busted and still are, which is why we now have that "cannot be destroyed/targeted by card effects" lmao

and change of heart too

you're not wrong. old yugioh was best yugioh even with it's obvious faults. IT was at least fun to play and the game still felt somewhat balanced. Special summons were still *gasp* special. Nowadays you can special summon with 0 consequences 5 things in a turn. Before special summons required consequences. Pay 1500 life, or sacrifice 3 cards to do a fusion summon. A 2000 4 star monster was dark elf and it required a 1000 LP hit to attack with it.

Not saying a game can't evolve, but it clearly evolved into something that is no longer yugioh. Heaven help you if you want to try a deck that isn't OTK anymore.

I think the last era of good yugioh is best represented on the 2011 DS game. That too me is the last hurrah of yugioh still somewhat acting like it's old self. It completely fell apart after that. and don't even get me started on that nonsense that was the crazy ban/restricted list crap.

IMO, the most fun metagame for me was mid-late Zexal era and early ARC-V era. Synchro/Xyz decks were the norm, but there were still plenty of viable decks that used Fusion/Ritual monsters (Heros, Gishkis, Gem-Knights) as well. Dedicated Pendulum decks early on weren't that great and Pendulum monsters either went unused or were used to support Synchro/Xyz summons. The game was fast and rewarded good plays and combos, but it wasn't nearly as crazy and "auto-pilot"-y as things eventually got later on in ARC-V (when Zoodaics destroyed the game so hard that MR4 was made) and into VRAINS (when Link monsters and MR4 itself caused tons of other problems).

That era around the end of Zexal and the beginning of ARC-V was just the right level of speed for me. Going back and trying to play older metagames (like through the classic video games or early story duels in Legacy Of The Duelist) feels insanely slow, but the actual current-day TCG meta is so crazy and elaborate that turns can last upwards of three minutes just repeatedly summoning stuff over and over again.

I play casually with my cousins now and yeah, I'd have to agree. Lucky that none of them play Spyrals because I've seen stuff on YouTube about them taking 10 minutes to do their turn. One of them plays heroes though and they sometimes take 3-5 minutes with their turn.

Starting with synchros it seemed like Konami decided that adding new card types every few years was a good way to keep the game fresh.

At the beginning we had normal monsters, effect monsters, fusion monsters, ritual monsters, magic / spells, and traps. Now theyve introduced synchros, xyz, pendulums, and links.

Ill admit that links are a cool way to make positioning a factor in gameplay, but synchros and xyz are just glorified fusions. Pendulums could have been neat but they accelerated power creep by a ridiculous amount.

So the large amount of new card types, combined with Konamis refusal to ban older sets like most card games, makes for a really bizarre hodgepodge of a game.

I feel people romanticize early Yugioh for being more "balanced" when they really mean they were too young to understand any sort of meta and they had no knowledge of the competitive scene. Stuff like Yata-lock that kept the opponent from playing the game has always been around.

The game's gotten more complex for sure, but not nearly to the extent that people that don't play anymore complain about. I never bothered to learn how synchro works, because my decks have always been fusion-based, and it didn't matter as much as long as the other person is playing correctly. You had to learn link summoning a few years ago, but now that one's more or less optional too.

yes it had balance issues from the start, but it wasn't near as bad as it would eventually become to the point where it doesn't even feel like yugioh anymore.

It's like type 1 all cards allowed MGT versus standard. Two entirely different games honestly.

Kaiba destroyed me in one turn busting out the combination of Dark Hole, Cyber-Stein, Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon, and Megamorph. :(

And that's what the banlist is for. That exact OTK combo got Cyber Stein banned and Megamorph limited to 1 for quite a long time, and I believe Dark Hole was already limited to 1 by that point and then got banned soon after. These days though, when there are so many ways to negate attacks or effects from the hand or graveyard, that OTK isn't nearly as much of a threat anymore and Cyber Stein is back at 1 on the current TCG banlist.

I won't pretend that old Yugioh was some marvel of game design, but I definitely think that it's gone downhill. The over-the-top complexity makes it incredibly intimidating for new players to pick up the game.

Since it was mentioned earlier, the anime peaked with 5Ds. The first season felt like they wrote the show before knowing any of the card game rules; combine that with the weird character choices and dialogue and it's hard to watch.
