Most bars aren't following any of the guidelines here. That said, it is not illegal to not follow the guidelines. They aren't laws but recommended guidelines.

I went out drinking last night and the night before. None of the bars I went to seemed to have any sort of precautions in place. Actually I tell a lie. The bar I was in last night had two jars on the bar marked clean pens and used pens. That's the only difference.

But other than that they were no different to pre-COVID. They were a little quieter than usual but still plenty busy.

Ours just post the guidelines, ask you to read them, and to make a decision if you are going to follow them or not. lol

New York has received 25,000 complaints of noncompliance with reopening rules, governor says
Andrew Cuomo said they have received reports from across the state that there are large gatherings, social distancing is being violated, and people arent wearing masks. He said the state has received 25,000 complaints of businesses that are in violation of the reopening plan.
Manhattan and the Hamptons are the leading areas in the state with violations," the governor said.
We have never received more complaints in a shorter period of time," he added.
He continued: Whats alarming about the 25,000 is the volume but it also shows how smart people and how offended people are that they are complaining."
He said this is particularly true at bars and restaurants. This is a question of violating the law.
Cuomo ran through the consequences to explain the gravity of the situation. A bar or restaurant can lose their liquor license for violating the rules, that is a big deal, he adds were not kidding around.
Inspectors and task force members are enforcing this, Cuomo said, adding he called a couple of bars and restaurants himself after he saw images from within.
Youre playing with your license, he said he told them.
An individual cannot violate the open container law as well, he added. You cant stand on the sidewalk drinking a beer, youre violating the open container law,
He also advised local governments that failure to govern will result in closures.
Earlier he said It is our behavior, nothing more nothing less, that determines the future of reopening. When all the numbers are good, those numbers can change in a week.

Wow.

Can you imagine the chaos of people reporting bars doing better than there's or getting out vendettas. Or trying to rollback to shutting down now? Would be chaos.

oh totally. weather is good and after the protests it's impossible to say in good faith "hey guys, maintain 6 feet" like before. the main thing i've seen are people eating outside, restaurants with outside areas are common here. said outside area is usually a few feet in front of the place on the sidewalk, which was always fine. cocktails to go being drank are probably the open container law stuff but both rules were always stupid ones nobody likes and should be kicked off the books.

and revenge calls/claims are definitely something people do. people are petty enough to do it. in some cases there isn't much of a violation occurring either - the functional difference between meeting up with friends as opposed to meeting up with friends in a bar is zero for guidelines. you're allowed to be in groups of 10 for any lawful reason here. bars and restaurants can't enforce a lack of social distancing there because there's already a purposeful lack happening in social gatherings like this.

i was going to stop doing the "where's the netherlands on the list of countries with the most cases" updates but i will point out that, for the first time in months, my country climbed up a spot on the list. first we dropped from #25 to #26, with colombia taking the #25 spot, but now we're back at #25 and colombia is back at #26.

there hasn't been a huge increase in new cases per day or anything here (it's about 200 today) so this probably doesn't mean much. the netherlands, colombia and ecuador are all close together at the moment, so we'll probably see some more placement changes there soon. still, i do hope we're not going to climb up even further on the list because of the looser restrictions we've had since 6/1/bars not adhering to covid measures/etc.

Our goal wasn't to get rid of the Coronavirus. Our goal was to keep it from overwhelming our hospital systems.

Also, there was 133k recorded deaths in just 4 nations of the EU (Spain, Italy, France, UK) compared to our 119k.

That's about 240 million population to our 330 millionish.

Why is that the goal? Why are you satisfied with that level of response if the EU can reduce cases by much more in the same amount of time?

And if we do keep the goal as what you say it is, were very likely going to have to shut down again at some point since cases are going up again in a lot of areas in the US.

Actually, the opposite is likely true. When they re-open they have more people not with immunity to make it spike again.

Re deaths, yes its true that hospitals in several European countries were overwhelmed, boosting their case fatality rates; they waited too long to act. But when they did shut down, they were able to get the substantial decline you see in that graph (NYC did this too, but most of the US did not). Without getting our number of active cases under control like the EU now has, it isnt going to take all that much growth in cases to get us to the point of overwhelming hospitals in many areas (I believe thats close to being the case in some southern cities right now). If you crush the virus down to a small enough level, you might be able to handle it without measures like shutdowns (e.g. through context tracing). The higher prevalence is, the harder that becomes.

Other than in NYC, thats not going to be all that significant. If 3% of your population got COVID, you only reduce R by 3%; that doesnt make the virus spread all that much less.

Should anyone realistically expect the USA to outperform the EU in something like this? I ask earnestly.

When you break it down logistically, does it make sense for a single, huge, massively sprawling nation to have a more firm grasp on protecting its 330mil than 20 something small countries all self-managing (and maybe cooperating too but idk I haven't paid attention to Europe really)? You have to combine the top 7 EU states by population to equal the USA. That's 7 governments at the country/federal level. Like, is it fair to compare countries to U.S. states and say "Poland roughly equals California. Romania roughly equals New York." etc. based on population?

Curious how people feel about that. (I know the USA has sucked at everything, I'm not defending us.)

States (without federal support) are definitely at a disadvantage compared to nations, particularly with respect to funding (they can't just deficit spend like the federal government can). This is irrelevant in our current timeline because Trump was basically doing jack shit to help, but in a hypothetical Clinton (or Romney, or whoever) presidency where the federal government was more involved, you could very well have had additional problems where some states refused to get on board with the plan from the federal government.

Well, that's the thing you aren't considering. A lot of places haven't had their initial spike yet in the United States. Yet, you are adding them all in at different times into your chart to show a consistent flow. Where if you put New York and New Jersey and Massachusetts up, they would resemble your chart. But, other US states never really got it yet like them, and maybe won't due to social distancing.

They also tell you to disregard cases because different testing comes into play. I can again show you the Nate silver analysis on this if necessary. Hospitalizations is a better barometer but even then if the wrong populace is getting infected in one place and not the other it can skew things too. We are not overwhelming our hospitals, so we are doing what we are supposed to be doing.
