My coworker who continued to test positive for over a month finally came back today after getting a negative. She said her only symptom was a fever for an hour and that if she didnt have work that day she would have never noticed. Crazy, imagine how many people might be walking around like that.

Yep. Though it's a little encouraging seeing the death rate continue to decline in general. It's a Tuesday which usually sees some carryover death reports from the weekend, and the US seems like it's coming in under 1k today.

Definitely encouraging, but really what this says is that we were doing a good job getting cases to drop a few weeks ago. I'm still quite worried about things starting to tick up again as restrictions are loosened are compliance drops.

nice unintentional joke in there.

i'm impressed they managed to graph that. it's not a surprising conclusion or target to study - we already knew fecal matter transmits it and one infected person with the runs could have their shit infect others after hours pass after they're done. they managed to successfully calculate the levels of sewage each person on average has, basically. it's a literal "how much does your town shit" chart.

So this is an infographic that gets updated every day for my city, Edmonton in Alberta, Canada

https://i.redd.it/7rxrbzwjk6151.png

Population of the greater Edmonton area is 1.3 million and we've only had 524 confirmed cases total, with 13 deaths. In May, we only increased cases by 34 and 1 death, so basically COVID had no impact in May.

It's well known in the city that the hospitals are pretty empty, so I don't think this is a case of the city just isn't testing or is manipulating the data in some way.

My personal experience throughout this whole thing been that people are very cautious about social distancing (people in stores maintain distance and are nervous getting close to pass eachother, and outside they will cross the street if they see me coming with my dog or whatever), and a lot of people do wear masks and gloves.

So it seems to me that the coronavirus did make it to Edmonton but basically has not spread at all in the populace due to the quick measures and people taking it really seriously, so that's really good.

I'm a bit worried though. When all the shut downs started, I made some arguments in here where I speculated if it's possible to smooth the curve TOO much too early where it doesn't start spreading enough to move through the population to utilize hospital capacity properly and begin building herd immunity. Then when restrictions lift, COVID will spread just like everywhere else and overwhelm capacity.

Funnily enough, it seems like my city is in exactly that situation. We implemented measures so well early on that basically nobody in the city has it. So if we start lifting restrictions and everybody stops taking things seriously because we are already mission accomplished, it could spike more than we can handle.

I think the best thing to hope for is that lifting restrictions is done in a gradual way that allows the virus to spread in a reasonable way but not in a giant spike

Hard to say though.... today is my first day back in the office and measures are pretty strong here... but I went into my backyard yesterday and my cousin was there after biking with 3 of his kids, a family friend and 2 of her kids, chilling in our patio furniture with my brother and cousin that I live with, and nobody seemed to be concerned about social distancing anymore....

The real issue is August is going to hit and all these businesses are going to be running skeleton crews to try to eek out lost profits.

Unemployment is going to stay high, economy fully opened or not.

It was part of Pakistan after India and Pakistan split, but it's been independent since the 1970s.

Also yeah, it's the 6th most dense nation of the world and the five ahead of it (Monaco, Singapore, Bahrain, Malta and Maldives) are all tiny in terms of area (less than 1000 square kilometers vs. Bangladesh's 144,000)

new covid measures in my country as of yesterday. they include:

  • gatherings with 30 people are allowed
  • two people per vehicle are allowed
  • high schools partially open
  • more trains and buses active
  • bars and restaurants partially open
  • cinemas partially open
  • museums partially open

i went to a bar yesterday. there were about 25 people there. because it was a pretty small bar, it was impossible for us to keep the proper distance from each other. the price of a lager went up from 2.60 to 2.80.

It definitely does not spread well outdoors, for a plethora of reasons.

  1. Sunlight kills the virus when directly hit by it much quicker.
  2. If you are outside, it is usually warmer. Virus spreads best at 38 degrees.
  3. You are likely to disperse coughs into air and not towards people outdoors
  4. Indoor air systems can recirculate the virus in the air.

You probably still wouldn't want fans at NBA/NHL games if that's the case.

If we don't see a major spike, you probably could make the argument for lower capacity seating of MLB/NFL games. For my White Sox, you wouldn't even notice the difference, honestly.

Haven't seen an updated study but I believe research was also showing sunlight inhibited the virus' ability to stick to surfaces.

Theoretically, piling a massive amount of healthy young people on the streets for herd immunity strat is better than spreading it through a work environment of ages that are going to range up to the 60s

Neither is ideal of course, but i suppose we should look at upsides when we can.

Problem is the general populace isn't going to really sit well with social distancing arguments when protests have shot that out of the stratosphere. I don't know if the populace will ever relatively accept them again.

The biggest thing there that is interesting is schools reopening. While many states have bars and gyms and such already reopened or about to, schools is the one that many others don't yet.
