$2k so I can keep all my cash offset against mortgage. Prior to this for close to 10 years it was $500 just for buyer protection as I'd usually pay it off the card first spare minute I had on phone or on computer.

I did get a few offers from bank to increase it to I think 4k from $500 but I always had the option to decline it... Just didn't want it getting stolen and having to deal with that.

$5000 and I have no idea why I'd use most of that. That would be a very expensive loan.

Credit cards kind of exist to tempt people into spending money they don't have. I just use mine for the credit score instead of debit, I get the cashback and end up saving money. They don't make a cent off me.

Nothing wrong with that better than 6k and having someone use them while you recover from surgery

$10kish I think. Bank of America keeps raising it occasionally.

That is my understanding as well, otherwise I would probably ask BoA to lower my limit for security reasons.

$5K, and they litterally forced that on me because for the longest time I had a $2500 limit and they used to hound me to raise it until they just did it anyways my making $5k the minimum limit one of their cards can have.

I use the card for everything (except regular monthly payments) and I barely use $500 a month. Hell, I don't think in the 10 years I have had the card I have ever had anywhere near $1K in debt. And I always pay it off every month (sometimes twice a month if I have money left over from my paycheck).

$6000 on my credit card. It was $3000 and then they upped it automatically. I forget what my bank gives me for limits, but I don't worry about that.
I hope one day they up my rewards instead of my limit...

Why do people keep talking like having a high limit is a security issue? Literally watch your accounts, check them at least once a month. They are required by law to scrub it from your account if you didn't make the actual purchase. So someone just using your card without your knowledge doesn't hurt you in any way unless you need access to that credit immediately.
because it doesn't matter what the law is if it's not enforced what are you going to do sue a fortune 500 company yourself good luck with that there was one case where somebody got over 100k in fraudulent charges on their TD credit card and TD bank denied their fraud claim it actually says in the TD credit card agreement that chip cards are fraud proof and if the fraudulent charge was a chip read transaction then the cardholder is liable.

Personally it is the hassle of dealing with potential fraudulent charges that I would wanna keep a lower limit if it did not affected my credit score. Granted I think my history with Bank of America has been good enough that they would not make me jump through loops to reverse any such charges and I believe any charges above a certain amount/frequency will require I confirm them via text.

Because you can literally file complaints against said company. They absolutely have to reverse them if you file a police complaint of fraud. At least in the US.

Are you referring to a hypothetical that you just came up with, or is there an actual case youd like to show. If its hypothetical...

But lowering the limit doesnt change the problems involved. It just means theyll not be able to buy as much...
I agree. It does not eliminate the actual problem of fraudulent charges and the hassle will still be there if made to jump through loops. I would just like to limit the damage in the worst case scenario.

Zangulus posted...
Generally speaking, stolen credit cards arent used for big purchases anyway. Theyre used for smaller ones so they sneak through easier.
Fair point. From personal experiences, my purchases does not trigger BoA warning system unless I make a very big charge or too many small charges in a very short time.

I wouldn't say it is a security issue, I know the banks handle it well. I had a fraudulent purchase in my account and the bank had my card canceled and a new one in the mail in less then 6 hours after it was made. And I balance my credit/debit statements daily, so again, not an issue of that.

It is just for lack of a better analogy I don't want to carry around a bazoka when a simple 9mm pistol is all I need. If I need $10K in credit for whatever reason I would rather get a bank loan then a credit card.

It was $22k and they just increased it cause I paid it off all in one shot. Guess they figured, $22k isnt high enough to get him into lifelong debt. Raise the limit on him.

They want me at that sweet spot where I cant afford to make greater payments but also dont fall behind. But after paying off that much debt all at once, I am not eager to get anywhere close to that again. So for now my CC is for emergencies ONLY.

This. I use credit for most everyday purchases for the rewards, but I consistently pay it off before interest ever comes into the question. My bank has offered to raise it to $7500 on a few occasions, but I haven't bothered because my approach to using the card means I never need that much. If that changes, I may raise it, but for now, I'm quite happy with what I've got.

How much credit do you all use?
Seems like most of us are smart.
I rarely use more than a couple hundred dollars before a payment, with most payments probably being around a hundred. I make payments after every few purchases or about once a week.
I only get rewarded for using the card and even got a bonus $150 in rewards/cash back in the beginning.
