This is backing the discussion up a bit but about the COVID-19 death count I thought general consensus among medical experts was it's undercounted. I think the best attempts at getting an accurate count have come from those looking not directly at the reported statistics but comparing the amount of deaths in 2020 for a given time period against the average amount of deaths for that stretch of time (or against 2019's equivalent, etc.) and looking at the "excess" death count with the likely assumption that COVID-19 deaths make up most of that difference.

Now obviously that doesn't tell the whole story (random variance, other causes, etc.) but I'm inclined to believe that's likely the closest number to the "true" count we're to get.

Problem is that due to various factors, deaths from other causes are typically down right now.

For mostly the same reason death rate remains stable during a recession/depression.

I am emphatically not saying (as I made explicitly clear in the post you're quoting) that what Reade alleges is not extremely bad. What I am saying is that it is closer to being assault without penetration (which would be sexual assault, not rape) than what people normally understand rape to be. I'm honestly not sure how anyone with self-awareness can say something like this, and think "This was a good idea." This is Brock Turner's dad level of spin. "Just a few minutes of action." It's the equivalent of saying "I'm not defending this... BUT---" which is like saying "No offense" thinking it suddenly absolves you of any offense, intended or otherwise.

I think its worth noting that Brock Turner was only found to have digitally penetrated his victim, so if youre comparing severity of crimes, the Biden case is the exact same act.

I only called Biden a rapist because of the people explicitly saying I believe Tara and I dont care admitting theyre ok with a rapist as long as its their guy.

If Joe did it, he is literally as bad as Brock Turnerand nobody here would dare defend him if he was compared to a rapistso I just dont know why youre on this hill.

No, you're minimizing Joe Biden's alleged actions. Innocent until proven guilty, but man, what an unbelievable double standard. And no, you wouldn't be acting like this if it was Bernie, or a Republican. For that matter if we are going to have different standards for different people, mine would be higher for a high ranking US senator than a 20-year-old college student.

Now if you want to argue that a candidate can be the best choice for the country notwithstanding his personal misdeeds, that's fine and perfectly reasonable. But that argument isn't going to be impacted whether the candidate did something horrible or something that's also horrible, but not as bad.

I would never have made the comparison of anyone doing what Biden is alleged to have done to what Brock Turner did, whether I loved or hated them. They're not the same.

I'm describing the idealized version for Sanders supporters. They largely think that Biden stepping down means Bernie (being second in delegates) should be the winner. The reality is that Biden stepping down throws things into such chaos that there's really no way to produce a successful Democratic nominee. Give it to Bernie, then a sizable portion of Biden voters would be pissed on multiple levels (don't want a socialist, don't think Bernie is a real Dem, think Bernie only got the nomination due to a Sanders supporter lying about Biden, etc.).

I can't help but think all of this would have been avoided if Elizabeth Warren had been the nominee.

Warren had some pretty good economic policies, but she's a women so lol

but if things need to be rationed out, to higher risks based on the data the place has would be important.

nah, there's a biologic factor. diseases and even literally what blood you have inside of you says so. there's been shortages of blood for certain races precisely because of people thinking that.

nah, one aspect can be ethnic but another racial. using sickle cell, most common within sub saharan african descent. this isn't an ethnic group, there's multiple ethnic groups in that region, we're looking at a racial one. it affects black people in the US, Africa, and Europe alike despite multiple generations and regional differences. you can do the same for certain bone issues across different races too, it's just certain quips in the DNA and body that do mark differences that have stuck with us for literally hundreds of years.
