I'm trying to figure out how dead my bracket is for taking Fire Emblem here when I ALSO took Persona 4 to win. I feel GTA losing is gonna kill more brackets while 3H probably has the brackets in its match

I actually don't like shitting on games I haven't played, tbh. I'll believe it's a good game. It's just that I'm not really into extremely complicated games, and bashing JRPGs because of that is... eh.

Early on during the bracket phase i got the impression Persona and FE were pretty close for division winner with nobody really giving Xenoblade a prayer. If that still holds true i can't see it affecting you that much tbh.

In terms of the guru Xenoblade had more brackets winning that Persona 4. Of course both had less than 10% each. I imagine the overall site will be similar since both games had between 30-40% just reaching here.

Following up it's most popular entry on a console not known for jRPGs with one of its worst entries on a console that WAS known for JRPGS in Legendia.

Abyss right after is a masterpiece, but it's frontloaded with a lot of stuff that, incorrectly, turned people off.

Vesperia is great but was locked on a console even LESS associated with the genre, and a bunch of people missed it.

The Xillia and Graces years were heavily unpromoted, series was being treated like it was Gust tier.

They make a much bigger push in marketing for Zesteria, except WHOOPS, it's generally considered the worst game in the franchise, or second worst.

Berseria absolutely KILLS it in quality, but both the publisher and the consumers were still spooked by Zesteria and the games marketing and sales take a hit as a result.

We can only hope Arise, which has been lying low but will likely be heavily promoted and looks like it's getting a LOT of attention put into it, can revitalize the franchise. The word of mouth on Berseria is so strong that it's got some good will going into it, too.

I mean if Arise ever comes out lol

Let's just hope that Arise is staying out of sight because they're putting a bunch of effort in and want a big re-reveal, and not because the game is getting upended by the director sleeping with a VA and re-writing the entire game to give them a bigger role.

So true. Tales is a marketing nightmare. Imagine if Symphonia and Vesperia had been on Sony consoles in the US from the start. Series would be huge. Hell, they should've released Abyss on Gamecube as well.

It is hard to say what Symphonia would have done releasing on PS2 exclusively instead, where it would have had competition and it would not have been promoted as much.A big part of why Symphonia succeeded was because it was on a genre starved console and got an ENORMOUS Nintendo push. People that normally would never have played it even with a PS2 did so because it was on the GameCube.

Vesperia, on the other hand, was on a console not known for Japanese games period, much less RPGs, and was also in the middle of Microsoft artificially pumping that console with jRPGs in general.

Would have loved to see Symphonia followed up by Abyss on the Gamecube with the same marketing push, though, since that's such a better game.

That's a great point. All Gamecube had in the RPG department was Skies of Arcadia. Meanwhile PS2 had FFX, KH, Xenosaga, Shadow Hearts, etc, and backward compatibility with PS1 RPGs.

The PS2 release of Symphonia wouldn't have mattered too much. That system was saturated and non-Square JRPGs struggled. What Tales needed to do was follow-up on its newfound, huge audience with Nintendo gamers and started releasing Tales multiplatform. Not have the next three games skip Nintendo systems before releasing an obvious beta 6 years later on the Wii.

It's the only Elder Scrolls game I've ever played. Liked it quite a bit after a 2 hour false start when I was trying to pick up and sell every item in the first cave. Then I realized how big the map was, lol. Definitely doesn't take a full RL day to cross but I remember it feeling enormous at the time.

Tales typically has solid voice acting, but not always, and that early it would have been a gamble looking at the difference between Legendia and Abyss there. Even if the quality could be matched by some later games, that cast was certainly unique in the realm of RPGs. Imagining Lloyd not voiced by Robin is difficult.

Nintendo system exclusive JRPGs have traditionally done very well because the fanbase is desperate. People rag on ToS for being propped up by that factor (which is...kinda true) but the best example is Baten Kaitos. There is no way something that aggressively mediocre sells more than 10 copies as a PS2 game.

Wow. This is something I've taken for granted with Tales.

Thank you, Nintendo. Can't imagine that game without the voicework.

Agree 100% on BK. That game, while unique in many regards, is extremely average. That said, I did enjoy the plot twist.

ToS, on the other hand, I enjoyed more than any of the PS2 RPGs I played before and after it. ToS had a fun factor that couldn't be touched back then.

The card battle system, visuals, music, and the plot twist were awesome.

The characters and storyline, on the other hand are completely forgettable. I only remember Kalas by name, along with the annoying blonde chick and the redheaded musician guy. Beyond that, everything's a blank.

Baten Kaitos Origins is legit an all time great and it's a shame nobody played it.

Baten Kaitos was definitely the superior RPG during that summer, but you just can't beat action rpgs anymore (or ever since like the 2000s).

Trails has the issue of being niche and also having had several releases this decade a lot of which were sequels.
