Town, cities, etc. Im thinking more along the lines of JRPGs, not Skyrim or Oblivion. What are some good RPGs with fully fleshed-out world maps? Ive played Chrono, FFIV and Super Mario RPG, the latter feeling a little too linear but still a GOAT

Golden Sun The lost Age

At a certain point, the world map opens up for you to explore and there are plenty of optional places to visit.

Will I have had to play the other games in the series to understand this one?

You can even pass your original save from the first game via old school method using a unique code given to you. The only thing that doesn't pass was a new name you gave your characters I think....bit they allow you to add it in somehow
Either way to play it sfe just keep the regular names.

Or if you have a friend/a second GBA, you can use a link cable.

The first one's World Map was actually my biggest problem with the game.

Well I haven't played it in years but the way I remember it:

1. No logical organization.
2. Too few graphics--everything is a field or a forest.
3. Too featureless/big.

Might be a stretch, but I feel Morrowind could be seen as that besides maybe "busy" although there's tons to explore/find out in the world. Depends on your definition of busy. There are many little towns that are optional to go to.

I thought the graphics were fine, but I would openly agree that the organization is a clusterfuck.

I'm indifferent to the size of the map, but to be fair I haven't played it in more than 15 years.

Final Fantasy type 0 actually has a pretty huge world map especially if you do all the optional expert missions which liberates cities for you to visit and tons of optional shit that there aren't even quests for like the valley of monsters.

It even has an airship (you don't get it until the ass end of the game but it's there)
