DC, my favorite is Killing Joke. Keep in mind I don't really like either too much. I always have the problem reading/watching a super hero thing and thinking "Yeah XXXX is happening, but why isn't so and so coming to help out since they are more powerful or would be related in some way" I would much rather all the heroes be in their own universe.

Story, DC: Batman: The Long Halloween, by Jeph Loeb & Tim Sale. (Self-contained, Gotham-centered gangster story.)

Story, Marvel: The Mighty Thor: I Whom the Gods Would Destroy, by Jim Shooter & Vince Colletta. (Thor trying to deal with Odin fucking with him.)

Story, Image: The Red Wing, by Jonathan Hickman & Nick Pitarra. (One of the absolute best sci-fi stories I've ever read.)

What's a good DC or Marvel standalone graphic novel?

That's an extremely broad question. What are you into? Would you prefer stories that are canon to the main universe, or are you fine with Elseworlds-type stories set in their own separate universe? Do you prefer stories that are a bit more experimental, or would you rather they were just good old fashioned cape stories? Do you prefer DC over Marvel, or vice-versa?

Also, do you care about how hard it might be to track down? Because I could easily recommend things you'd have an extremely hard time finding because I'm pretty sure they haven't been reprinted for like 30 years.

Just for reference (and to help narrow things down in the future when asking other people), generally a graphic novel is a stand-alone story, while collections of comics that had been released individually are called trade paperbacks. Being specific about which one you're actually looking for can help other people to offer good suggestions.

Though along that line, which do you prefer? Stories from a main comic title that ran across a number of issues but which were collected in a single trade paperback later? Or standalone graphic novels that tell a self-contained story (and which are often somewhat more mature or complex than normal comic stories)?

There's a LOT of good comic collections and graphic novels out there. Trying to narrow down your focus will help make it more likely you get recommendations you'll enjoy.

Kingdom Come

JLA: The Nail

Batman: The Killing Joke
Batman: The Long Halloween
Batman: A Death in the Family
Batman: Under the Red Hood
The Dark Knight Returns

Superman: Red Son

Superman & Batman: Generations

Teen Titans: Judas Contract

Crisis on Infinite Earths

---

The Death of Captain Marvel
X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills
Starstruck
Swords of the Swashbucklers
Marada the She-Wolf
Emperor Doom
Doctor Strange and Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment

---

X-Men: The Dark Phoenix Saga
X-Men: Days of Future Past
X-Men: From the Ashes
X-Men: Mutant Massacre

Captain America
(basically, any collection from Mark Gruenwald's run)

Incredible Hulk: Crossroads
(basically, any collection written by Bill Mantlo)

Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle
Iron Man: Armor Wars
(basically, any collection written by David Michelinie)

Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt

Thor
(basically, any collection written by Walt Simonson)

Squadron Supreme (original limited series)

I could probably think of more if I really concentrated, but that's all that's popping to mind.

If you're willing to stray outside of Marvel, I'd recommend pretty much every single thing Valiant did between 1991 and 1994 (though the first two years are much, much better than the latter two).

Suprised no one has mentioned Daredevil: Born Again. It is probably one of the best graphic novels I have ever read (really it is a trade paperback, but you only need a brief knowledge of Daredevil to pick it up).

That made me remember Hawk-Owl, (mini-series is actually called Ultimate Adventures).

One of the unique storylines of Ultimate Marvel that I would definitely like to see again in some form or shape.

It's not exactly a graphic novel, but Batman: The Dailies 1943-1946 was very interesting. It's a reprint of the original newspaper comic strips from the 1940s.

I wish batman was in his own universe. I think it would be much better. He has enough backup characters to support his own solo world anyway. I also wish the X-Men had their own universe. people hating mutants doesn't really make sense with all the other super powered people running around who some are adored by the public
