It would have been really hard to explain how Superman failed to prevent it. In the DC universe, NYC is very close to Metropolis. And Clark can fly faster than planes. He's probably able to go from Metropolis to NYC in less than 5 minutes
I doubt he could stop the first plane as no one even knew what was happening until it hit
