Well, for starters, Dark Souls 1 initial reception was kind of 'meh' in terms of how divisive of a game it was, both with fans and critics. Then it started building up a fandom all of a sudden.

Now, with its sequels and spiritual succesors being released and winning multiple awards over the years, it's a cultural videogame phenomenon.

Yes, this is just assumptions, but you don't have to have to be that keyed into the scene to know Dark Souls is always growing. The first one being the best is still by far the majority opinion, even with DS2 backlash drying out and that game having a resurgence, and DS3 always being considered a very good game. None of the game's communities are drying up, and it won almost if not possibly the most GotD nods at the end of last year around, though this is also through observation since we don't have hard numbers on that.

Dark Souls is a big fucking deal.

The Last of Us is a very good game currently going through a lot of bad press and upset fans due to delays and internal issues.

I mean that's kinda how we have to judge them!

Otherwise I'd have Galaxy 2 winning the contest!

It sounds like you only played the tutorial, I would say no other game could do what CK2 does

Just going back to an inconclusively answered question from 2013: TLoU VS LoZ:LBW, who you got?

Assuming TLoU/LoZ:LBW are equal and TLoU/CK2 stays as they are right now, Bayonetta gets 75.05% on Crusader Kings 2.

In 2013, ALBW probably would have won if it came down to a 1v1, based on what happened with Brawl vs. MGS4 removing Fallout 3 and Ultimate vs. God of War removing Red Dead Redemption 2. All cases of a Nintendo game against a Sony exclusive removing a broadly popular multiplatform game. TLoU would have had to gain substantially more than either of those (in fact, Brawl was the net beneficiary from Fallout 3) in order to win and that seems unlikely given how broad GTA's reach is. To win TLoU needed to get an extra 3.17% off of GTAV, here's how both of the non-Nintendo finalists did relative to the Nintendo finalist:

MGS4: -1.9%
GoW: +1.65%

This also follows with RE2 only getting an extra 1.66% against Fire Emblem off of Sekiro. Now, FFXV did get enough, pulling an impressive 5.95% extra off Uncharted 4, but that's going the other way - so if you had removed TLoU GTAV probably would have gained more. This makes sense given the natures of exclusives and multiplatform games. A multiplatform game probably has more to gain from the removal of an exclusive than an exclusive has to gain from the removal of a multiplatform game.

Nowadays I would take TLoU by a hair, because I think it stuck around in the popular consciousness in a big way while ALBW got completely overshadowed by BotW. However round 1 has me not so sure!

Kills me too to have all these great games "trashed" because they're not worth anything in a contest. Smaller stuff like The Talos Principle, The Witness, and The Stanley Parable are all legitimately great games that more people should play.

I know this is GameFAQs, so as a general rule Nintendo > RPGs > Everything Else, but I hope the tiny bit of extra exposure gets some people to give some of these "other" games a try.

In theory these contests would help thay but at the end of the day they still cost money and unfortunately if youre not gonna do well in this contest (hell sometimes even IF youre doing well in this contest) if peoples tastes dont align with the lower seeded games theyre just not gonna buy em

It isn't just gameFAQs though. This is a popularity contest first and foremost, so an indie game with a small playrate has an uphill battle against a mainstream industry game. Those games would be losing in most other sites.

Never used these contests as a means to find new stuff to play. They have however put me off games even more.

I can't remember if I played Undertale before, during, or after THAT contest. But I'd have to think that infamous run got many people to check out that game that knew nothing about it beforehand.

I think if a "no-name"/indie game DOES win a poll, that should be enough for people to take notice. Hollow Knight and Ori are both FANTASTIC Metroidvania style games. Major studios literally could not do them any better.

I saw a lot of Dark Souls at #1 on multiple sites, so not sure how much they've narrowed their selections.

I will still stand by the BotW hate train, especially after giving it a good 15 hours last month to try and give it a chance. That thing blows.

The only one from that list not in our contest is Pokmon GO. Would've been interesting to see how that did.

imo even if BotW never existed I don't think most of the #1 awards go to Dark Souls. For lack of a better word, it's too 'hardcore' to be universally loved. Praised, yes, respected, yes. It's also not an experience everyone can enjoy. Something more sandboxy and carefree like Skyrim probably gets the most.

Nothing worse to me than a large, open, sandboxy game. I want linear, guided experiences, with very little downtime. If you asked me what the bottom of the barrel is, it'd be stuff like Fallout and Skyrim. Just absolutely hate that stuff.

But, you know, guess that's what's in! BotW basically killed Zelda for me.

Also, personal prediction I'm rolling with until Round 2: this is also why I think Last of Us still has the edge over Dark Souls. People will respect vote Dark Souls over an indie they don't care about. We'll see if that extends to games they like

I didn't think much of the TLOU Vs. Dark Souls match. I think people are much more welcoming of a hand-holding cinematic game than a supposedly brutal one so I went with the former.

I'd take Pokmon GO. It doesn't seem to be too hated for a mobile title, so I think it'd get more votes than anti-votes.

Though I also still think Fate/Grand Order can still beat Journey and that's what my bracket has too.

If you haven't played Super Castlevania IV, I highly suggest it. It's the best 2D linear experience I've ever had.

Mario Kart/Uncharted might be the most consequential match of the first round and I'm still not sure how it'll go. Initially I had Uncharted and felt confident, and then I was essentially forced to change to Mario because that was the overwhelming favourite on the board and historically I've been to biased towards Uncharted and been burned because of it.

I still kind of like Uncharted for this match despite changing to Mario Kart. It's consequential because the winner is going to win again, so it's more than just a one point loss. I also expect this to be the largest B8 and casual discrepancy of the first round. You've got to assume that Uncharted is the overwhelming site favourite both because of seeding and the game.

Posting here as well for discussion purposes.
