It might have to do with Florida having such a high percentage of elderly people per capita. Number two in the nation after... Maine, actually. But Maine only has like 155 confirmed cases.

States like California and New York have higher overall numbers of elderly people, but also bigger populations overall and as a result bigger medical infrastructures, so the per capita is the better number to go by as it would be a better indicator about which medical infrastructures are going to be overburdened.

NY Gov responded saying it would be a federal declaration of War. His entire quote interesting...

"I do not believe it's going to come to that on this," Cuomo told Ana Cabrera. "I've been speaking to the president. This would be a declaration of war on states. A federal declaration of war. And it wouldn't just be New York, New Jersey, Connecticut. Next week it would be Louisiana with New Orleans, and the week after that it would be Detroit, Michigan, and it would run all across the nation. South Korea hasn't had these sorts of shutdowns, because they've been testing a ton. If you can identify and isolate people carrying the virus, you can be a bit more relaxed with the general population. The way back to normalcy is with mass testing.

I support mass testing and I believe no other way will return us to normalcy but the numbers will be so overwhelming that it will not seem that we are on the right path

Cuomo seems to be getting upset at the measures other states and Trump is taking or considering against NY. You have that and then what the Rhode Island Gov announced today. They have their cops and National Guard looking around for New Yorkers to force them to self isolate in their state.

He is right though. US has like 10-14 other hotspots.

South Korea has no borders with countries open. The North Korean border is literally militarized with a dmz. They are a peninsula unconnected from there.

Comparing them to countries with large borders with surrounding nations is pretty much a fools comparison.

Same with Japan. A literal island nation.

1700 people in quarantine, 200 potential cases, all of which are being tested. No open borders and a government that responded immediately and preemptively.

And this is a sub-Saharan landlocked African nation.

There is no excuse.

It's in the southern hemisphere. They will have their day when they enter their winter which let's the virus spread faster. The African and South American nations seem to be doing great with numbers until you remember they are less likely to be testing and reporting due to lower health care systems and because the heat there is going to help with not spreading the virus.

Also, Africa is lesser traveled areas by tourism and travel all together.

So Cuomo questioned the legality of a quarantine and restriction of movement... While shutting down businesses and ordering a restriction of movement in his own state? He is basically telling his constituents that they shouldn't listen to his own orders.

IIRC it's been like 3 weeks and we're at 13, with huge events making a couple of those topics last about a day. Assuming things keep happening at the current rate with no surprises, my guess is...32.

If big events happen, (more celebrities, or Trump or the Queen catch the virus and/or die, more hotspots in the US turn into mini-Italys with hundreds dying each day, etc) then 57.

Yeah, our biggest problem is the lack of capability to test. South Korea prioritized the production of test kits back in January(they had their first confirmed case the same day we did: January 27th), and they were able to ramp up production fast enough to catch and trace case clusters and effectively isolate them, mitigating spread while ensuring their public health infrastructure was as prepared as possible for the carnage. They've managed to slow the spread and significantly mitigate the number of fatalities.

Really, in the coming week, we're going to find out a lot. How bad are things going to get down South? Can Michigan get a handle on the cluster in Detroit, or is it already too late? Can NYC cope, or will those hardest-hit hospitals have to resort to triage like the ones in Lombardy? How long will the problem keep Trump's attention, and will he ever actually act?

Washington-4319 cases and 195 deaths

Oregon-469 cases, 15 deaths. Oregon had 98 deaths yesterday, 68 today. People starting to say it's not going to be as bad as first thought but still early.

Washington Gov Jay Insley waited way to long to order a shelter in place.

Agreed. I want to get a haircut but barbershops gonna be closed at least a couple months. At least Netflix dropped the new season of Ozarks so got something to watch for a couple days. Other than that not much to do but play video games.

And there's still a shortage of testing being done in the State. I live in the STL Metro East and my wife still doesn't qualify to be tested despite being in rough shape, but not bad enough to be in the ICU so the State doesn't want to test her. So I imagine there are a hell of a lot more infected in IL than being reported.
