9/11 affected America and killed 1/3 of the people coronavirus has so far. Corona is still accelerating further away and is a global news story.

Obviously corona is bigger.

I remember when 9/11 happened there were people on the radio from NPR to Sports talk discussing that Irony and Comedy would be changed forever. It wasn't. But thats how insane people felt, that the world couldn't laugh again.

We had comics where Spiderman failed to be there for 911.

Now the difference is sports didnt cancel then

This won't beat out 9/11 in the long term.

9/11 permanently changed western society by enabling the surveillance state. It made airports, concert venues, and schools miserable and took away our sense of privacy.

It also inspired the horrible foriegn policy and multiple wars that affected the entire globe, as well as the waves of xenophobia that have officially risen to power in the past five years

Long term? This virus might just make people more cool with hanging out online or working from home.

It's a more personal story. So I guess ultimately it's a silly question.

Coronavirus is a big story, but it has to change something in the way we go about things in a pretty major way far into the future for it to surpass 9/11.

Coronavirus has a bigger short term impact because it's changed how people are going about the day to day. Let's say this lasts for like a year (even 6 months). I'd say then it's probably the bigger story. But in reality, we'll probably not know the real impact of the pandemic until several years from now when we can look back and see the actual changes it brought about.

I think because 9/11 was a sudden, shocking impact and Coronavirus has had a more gradual ramp-up you think about them a bit differently.

I'd say Coronavirus is the bigger story now but it's a hard call to make because 9/11 was such an immediate shock.

Right NOW, yes.

9/11 changed things for years to come, but it didn't damn near shut down the world the way coronavirus has.

Now, whether coronavirus will turn out to have the long-term impact 9/11 did, who knows.

Okay sure to the first part of the sentence, but people just saying corona is close to the swine flu are just as big a problem as the people in panic because they're not taking it serious enough. The world has basically closed down, it's nothing like that.

To the topic question, it really depends on how you understand "bigger news story". I doubt the everlasting impact of this will reach what 9/11 did, but this has a lot higher death date and has the whole world allowed.

Pokewars and banananor are dead-on here IMO. 9/11 absolutely had massive implications across the globe; the people voting for it here aren't just being "jingoistic American swine" or whatever.

That having been said, I agree with Ngamer that the gap in influence still has time to shrink.

Many of the security measures people are talking about were commonplace outside of the US in the 90s and earlier in many countries. The Iraq War it led to is a much much bigger story than 9/11, with a much bigger impact. Or the Syrian Civil War for that matter. The global financial crash is also a bigger story. And if you want tragedies there is the 2004 boxing day tsunami that killed over 200,000 people. Hell, the Yugoslav wars lasted for ten years, killed ~150,000 people, displaced 4,000,000 and completely restructured that area. Oh, and the fall of the Soviet Union!

This idea that 9/11 is the most important thing ever is as Ameri-centric as it gets.

@Lightning_Strikes I agree. I know that Americans(and apparently Canadians)think that day was the worst ever but let's be real here. It was bad sure but a lot more events were and are much worse.
We had a Civil war until like 20 years ago as you said(Yugoslav Wars)but fuck them right?Their problem. Or the Syrian Civil war but fuck them too right? I don't see USA intervening there.
Guess there is not much to earn there so they stay out of this. Real noble.

Yeah, people tend to imagine that the everlasting impact of 9/11 in America has been of the same size globally, which is nowhere near true. It's definitely somewhere in between the extremes made in this topic. Lightning Strikes has some good examples of things that at least here in Europe was basically just as big a deal as 9/11. That said, there was definitely more than just some worrying over here.

The things about coronavirus is that it's actually just pausing everything in the world little by little. We're not just paying our respect to the many that has died of it so far and scaredly continuing our own lives. Countries are closed for every single person and we don't know how long it might continue to f*** everything that was supposed to happen over. For sure nothing has been like that in my time.

Okay, you absolutely cannot pull the money argument against corona when it's basically just beginning and the whole world is in a finalcial crisis.

I'm sure 9/11 "learned" people some things too. I mean, I appreciate optimism in general, but use that to be happy you clearly haven't been affected all too much instead.
