I didnt see a new topic so I thought I'd continue the discussion...

I've heard mark Cuban has said that the NBA is going to propose to not finish the season but rather have teams play maybe q handful of games over a 2 week period to get the rust off then have playoffs based on current seeding (along with however many games they play when they come back).

I'm imagining the NHL follows the same example but obviously we have no idea how this will play out.

Thanks for making this, I was starting to get antsy without an NHL topic as refuge.

I was wondering what kind of leeway they have to alter the playoff schedule, or if there'd need to be NHLPA signoff. Like, could they do any of the following:

-Skip the first round and just start at divisional 1 vs 2
-Best 3 of 5 instead of 4 of 7 for one or more rounds
-Just stick St Louis and Boston in a quarantined area and have them play in the Cup finals

Honestly not sure about what rules are in place for these type of scenarios. I'd imagine the players / fans would much rather see the normal playoff size and structure with a best of 5 instead of a best of 7 with half the teams. Who knows though.

So like, my thing is, what exactly is the big deal with these sports leagues wanting to cut stuff short, like they have to stick to a schedule? There's plenty of offseason time they can cut into, what difference would it make?

Other than playing in July, and having the NHLPA sign off on everything, I'd think there's an issue around getting the arenas for the days that need games, which are never a concern mid-June onwards for any team (and earlier for a lot more). And on top of that is the NBA potentially resuming at the same time the NHL does and their sharing arenas too.

I don't know if Strife has any insight in what the offseason Xcel Energy Center schedule is like or if there'd be enough empty nights that they could fit their home games in there?

NBA already plays at the same time the NHL does, that shouldn't be an issue that wouldn't already happen during a normal schedule. I would think them restarting at the same time would make it easier, cause then the schedules would align like they would have during a normal uninterrupted season.

As far as getting the arenas, do you mean in terms of conflicting with non-sports events?

This is in fact problematic, yes. I know Staples keeps a huge block clear for NBA and NHL playoffs but they fill the dates up after with whatever they can. The schedule can get pretty full.

They could always shorten the post-season too.

Make the first two rounds best of three, and the last two rounds best of five or something.

That would change your "potential number of games needed" range from 16-28 per team to 10-16.

Man this would be such an anti-leafs things to just barely qualify thanks to a rule that cuts the season. 10 years ago this happens and they miss by 1 point.

Vancouver and the Islanders specifically get screwed if they just skip to the postseason. The Islanders just need 1 point over 2 games to pass Columbus.

There doesn't feel like any good option here. Assuming they'd get that point is unfair to Columbus. Not giving them the chance to make up two games is unfair to them.

Nah it would definitely be based on points percentage rather than current standings. Recall these are the official playoff tiebreakers:

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).
2. The greater number of games won in regulation (not including games won in overtime or a shootout).
3. The greater number of games won in regulation and overtime (not including games won via shootout).
4. The greater number of games won in any fashion.
5. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home

Weird how #1 is "fewer number of games played" when you'd expect every team to play 82, but I guess that's there mainly for determining positioning during the season; but also sometimes games get cancelled and don't get made up by the end of the season. Or in cases like this, that comes in handy.

So in the East, the Islanders jump ahead of the Bluejackets so we have this:

Boston vs. NY Islanders
Tampa Bay vs. Toronto
Washington vs. Carolina
Philadelphia vs. Pittsburgh (nice Pennyslvania classic)

And in the West, points-percentage plays havoc with Vancouver leapfrogging Calgary for 3rd in the Pacific, and for the two wild card spots:
Nashville (78 pts in 69 games)
Calgary (79 in 70)
Winnipeg (80 in 71)

Jets are the odd team out, tough break. So it'd look like this:

St. Louis vs. Calgary
Colorado vs. Dallas
Vegas vs. Nashville
Edmonton vs. Vancouver

Here's a crazy thought (probably can't happen because of the CBA, but hear me out here).

Obviously, if the whole season/playoffs just gets cancelled, that's pretty unfair to the teams who were doing well, right?

Compensate them by flipping the draft order. Give Boston the #1 pick and go down the standings from there.

Why? Because fuck the Red Wings, that's why!

I think even if you're in the business of screwing over the Red Wings, rewarding Boston in any manner is absolutely not a thing you want to do either.

Also, if my draft lottery sims are any indication, Detroit is definitely picking 4th in the current structure.

Fuck the Bruins always trumps Fuck the Red Wings, come on Muffin.

So I wonder if they could write a blanket contract extension into the CBA, I was picturing a full continuation/resolution of the season like this
-Hockey is back in June, full resolution of regular season, fully playoffs
-March-April-May-Early June becomes June-July-August-early September
-3 month offseason, CBA date now October 1
-Training camps and exhibition games in December
-Abridged season begins early January, just like in the lockout season, no all-star game

Probably easier to just cancel the reason of this season and have a full one next time than trying to make things up now, especially over the summer, nobody would be interested in that (probably not the NHLPA either). But would be nice if there was a proper resolution...

Ottawa Senators finished first for once!

....first team to have a COVID-infected player.

Article notes the team was in the California road trip when the season got cancelled so about 2 weeks ago. Article also notes the earliest possible resuming date for the season as early May, which makes sense, but can't see that even happening barring a miracle.

Rogers just charged my friend an overage charge for using too much data while stuck at home, despite us hearing that they would be removing overage charges, so I think the Leafs will be fine.
