Windows 10 isn't so bad once you break it. Sorta like how Germany wasn't so bad once you got rid of all the Nazis.

So either Entity is right here in that people's standards have gone way down, or (perhaps more accurately), the people who simply don't give a damn are people who would have had no business operating a computer 25 years ago.

I mostly just miss 7's ability to disable fully-automatic updates. The number of times I've been unable to properly use my laptop because Windows 10 is taking up all of its processing power installing an update it decided should be installed right then is just plain infuriating. 7's "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them" option was ideal: It lets me know when something's available, but doesn't actually install it until I tell it to, allowing me to defer it until a more convenient time. I know I should "upgrade" my desktop from 7, but I really, really don't want to.

Noop_Noop posted...
I'm sure one day it will be a stable, functional OS

I wouldn't hold your breath. It's almost 5 years old now, and while there have been a few stability improvements, I feel like most of their focus in updating it has been efforts to circumvent people's efforts to take back control of their computers (see: Removing the ability to disable Cortana without using regedit). I can only imagine that will get worse now that their only serious competitors are either no less restrictive (iOS) or have been discontinued (Windows 7).

I hated Windows 10, but I recognize why some people do enjoy the updated aesthetic (especially compared to Windows 8.1) and certain features. I personally use Windows 8.1 for my gaming PC, but I use Windows 7 for my work laptop. We also have Windows 7 on my husband's gaming PC. He prefers how Windows 10 looks, but neither of us could deal with the lack of user control.

I figured. My laptop's old enough (bought it more or less the day Windows 10 came out, actually, and immediately took the free upgrade from 8 so I didn't have to learn 8) that I'm not going to bother messing around with it any more than I already have (mostly just murdering Cortana), but once I stop slacking and switch my desktop over, I'll probably start looking into what I need to do to make 10 more 7-like. I may or may not take advantage of this set of hacks, but I'm definitely not going to just stick with vanilla Windows 10.

I dont really care about being spied on....though I dont agree with it, thats not my main concern.

but making Windows 10 more efficient with less annoying popups and alerts and shit? I might check this out.

I already go through and disable anything I dont feel is necessary for my windows experience, but there are plenty of things I've missed and also as you say, things you can do that windows aint telling you about or do not want you to be able to do.

Honestly Win10 is a decent OS for the most part so long as you're willing to use it the way that Microsoft wants you to. If you want it to work in a way Microsoft doesn't want you to, though, it can horribly break. As far as the spying aspects of Windows goes, while you can easily argue it's morally wrong, practically speaking it's unlikely to legitimately effect you in any meaningful way.

BTB posted...

You don't like it? Don't use it. OSX/Linux/*BSD/other obscure shit exist. You're just validating Microsoft's decisions and contributing to the problem if you continue to use it when you don't like it.

Cortana can be turned off in the settings but the process will continue to run. Even if disabled via the registry, it can only be stopped entirely via deleting or renaming the directory where the process lives.

Timeline, similarly, can be turned off in the settings, but can only be fully disabled via the registry.

These on their own are not of particular import. The significant point is that Windows 10's telemetery service - DiagTrack - can not be disabled via the settings and MUST be disabled via the registry.

Finally, there's Windows Update. Windows Updates have been known to continually undo changes such as the ones mentioned above, and the fact that Windows Updates can not be disabled by the end user in an easy manner, any OTHER steps you take to disable intrusive policies don't really matter. Automatic Updates can, in theory, be disabled via registry hacks. However, the behavior of the WUpdate process itself is highly suspicious.

In short, you can disable the service all you want. Windows will let you think it's been shut off for good. What will actually happen is that a SECOND process which can't be disabled will just necro the Windows Update Process every 24 hours or so. It's particularly deceitful and the kind of behavior that "legitimate" software should not employ. Your two options for killing the Update process permanently are to assign it improper credentials so that it can't log in or download Windows Update Blocker.

There's also the case of advertisements, which... well, the list of registry hacks to disable THOSE is a mile fuckin' long.
