Not necessarily. Mewtwo did worse than Mew, Incineroar was just ok, Jigglypuff and Pichu did nothing special, and Ivysaur isnt even in Kantos Top 30. Greninja was crazy popular long before Smash, and with Ash Greninja and its massive media focus its popularity skyrocketed. The same is true for Lucario. Plenty of Pokmon in the Top 10 arent in Smash beyond Spirits.

Look again, Jigglypuff wasn't in Kanto's Top 30 either.

I am happy that the top 10 is so varied in terms of generations
Mimikyu getting so much love warms my heart
Lucario is super overrated and I don't like him being #2
Sylveon being the second most popular Eeveelution is the most surprising result in the top 10. Even more popular than Eevee? what?!
Bulbasaur being more popular than Charmander and Squirtle? ahhhhhh?

The only explanation for those are SFF (Pikachu taking votes from Eevee and Charizard and Blastoise taking votes from Charmander and Squirtle)
Mewtwo not even top 5 in Gen 1

Honestly Gen 1 results are super strange
The other generations results makes more sense

Typhlosion at #4 for Gen 2 is surprising, but the other 4 are fine
Sceptile #4 for Gen 3 is also surprising
Gen 4 and 5 are pretty predictable
6 is fine..but again, I never realized Sylveon was so popular
7 having Zeraora is surprising because of how little screen time it got. Two anime episodes that who the hell watched and a small role in a movie that who the hell watched
It was also a Gamestop exclusive for a "third version" game
Gen 8 I expected Falink instead of Alcremie but it's fine

This is only due to the nature of how voting worked.

If you could just choose any pokemon for your top 10 or whatever, these results would definitely be more Gen 1 biased.

There's the small chance of meta voting too. Years ago Arceus won a popularity poll because it was announced the winner would receive an event distribution, so some people could've been thinking along those lines for Zeraora.

Yea can we get the rest to see where our actual favorites ended up

Although I am happy to see Mimikyu and Umbreon there

You can actually see the Top 30 Pokemon for each generation on the Pokemon of the Year website, but you first need to select a region from the drop down list below "More results:", followed by scrolling through the entire Top 5 for that region before it will show you the rest of the Top 30.

Or if you were given the option of voting for 10 Pokemon, but could spread your votes between any of the generations.

Unlikely. Bulbasaur got more votes than Squirtle, Blastoise, and Charmander combined. Bulbasaur's definitely more popular than Squirtle, at the least. Probably more popular than Charmander, too, unless you think almost half of people that picked Charizard have Charmander as their #2.

If it were full evos only things would look way different.

The Chespin line was the only starter line that didn't get a single Pokemon in the Top 30 for any generation. It couldn't even make an appearance in Gen 6's Top 30 despite being the smallest generation.

Total number of votes if we looked at just the Top 30 Pokemon for each generation:

Gen 1 - 731203
Gen 2 - 666184
Gen 3 - 679819
Gen 4 - 644209
Gen 5 - 529559
Gen 6 - 636377
Gen 7 - 597601
Gen 8 - 619399

Gen 1's Top 30 still has more votes than all of the other generations, but I think Gen 1's votes are more heavily concentrated at the top compared to the later generations. There's also the possibility that more people chose to put in votes for Gen 1, and some people may have chosen to not vote for the later generations. I'm not sure if it was possible to not vote for certain generations, or if the voting form actually required one vote for each generation before it would accept the votes.

Gen 5 easily has the least concentrated Top 30. Genesect with 7905 votes is higher the number 30 ranked Pokemon for Gen 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7.

Also, the Japanese site for the results revealed that there were a total of 6608215 votes overall (spread out over 890 Pokemon). The Top 30 Pokemon for each generation combined for 5104351 votes (240 Pokemon), which meant there were 1503864 votes for the remaining 650 Pokemon.

You could vote for as many or few generations as you wanted one time each day of the voting period. You were presented with a button for each gen that would then take you into the full list of Pokmon from that generation in National Pokdex order.

Vote totals for the top 30 Pokemon for each generation:

https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/154738784536231936/682784824100126722/unknown.png
https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/154738784536231936/682784887073538088/unknown.png

None of the Gen 1 starter middle evolutions got into the Top 30, but that was a highly competitive generation just to make Top 30. Charizard doesn't break 100000 votes as a result of the extreme competition near the top. Mew somehow manages to beat out Mewtwo, which I totally didn't expect. Squirtle was the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen I Pokemon, but it finishes 13th here.

Houndoom, the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen II Pokemon, only gets 20th for this generation. The difference between Lugia and Ho-Oh is the largest difference between the 2 main boxart legendaries for any generation. Lugia comes fairly close to tripling Ho-Oh in raw votes.

Gen 3 had the closest race for the number one spot, with less than 400 votes separating Rayquaza and Gardevoir. Latias ends up being more popular than Latios. In a rather unusual result, Aron ends up beating Aggron by more than 6000 votes.

Piplup > Empoleon for Gen 4 (Bane would totally like this result). Leafeon getting more votes than Vaporeon is clearly the biggest sign of Gen 1's stacked competition at the top.

Galvantula, the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen V Pokemon, fails to appear in the Top 30 for this generation. Joltik does make the Top 30, appearing at 27th.

Pangoro, the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen VI Pokemon, only gets 26th for this generation. Diancie at 16th place was better than I expected from it. Goomy also failed to finish higher than Goodra, maybe a sign of the Goomy memes dying off? (plus Gen 6 being at least 6 years old now)

Rowlet and Decidueye finishing 2nd and 3rd for this generation was a huge surprise because of the voting format. There should be a good deal of overlap between Rowlet and Decidueye in terms of people who like both of them, but could only vote for one of them per day. That's probably the only reason Mimikyu won this generation so easily. All of the starter final evolutions made the Top 10, even Primarina who is the least popular of the 3. Buzzwole is the only Ultra Beast to make the Top 30. Tapu Koko is the only Tapu to make the Top 30.

Snom may have pulled off an impressive 4th place this generation while breaking 38000 votes, but I think this result is fueled by rallies due to Gen 8 being so recent. This meant Snom could easily capitalize on the memes while they are most relevant. It would be interesting to see what happens to Snom in the future if we ever get more Pokemon of the Year competitions. Even though there's a large difference between Zacian and Zamazenta (slightly above a doubling), it's still not as huge as the beating that Lugia put on Ho-Oh for Gen 2. Although Hatterene only finished 13th here, it has potential to grow its popularity even more due to the Gardevoir comparisons. Plus Gardevoir had over 17 years to accumulate the popularity it has today. Also, Appletun > Flapple, like it should be.

This was a worldwide competition, which means the Japanese fanbase can make some of their preferences more visible here. And since the anime is way more popular in Japan than the rest of the world, any Pokemon with an big anime presence could get a boost in this competition.

One of Japan's preferences being made known here was Reshiram finishing less than 2000 votes behind Zekrom. Outside of Japan, Zekrom is definitely more popular, but Reshiram is more popular in Japan.

How do you know this?

There was an competition in Japan back in 2016 to select a Pokemon for an event distribution for the 2016 Pokemon movie. Greninja was the winner of that competition and it wasn't even a legendary or mythical that won. In the full results, Reshiram finished in 21st place while Zekrom got 33rd place. The top 100 was heavily filled with legendaries or mythicals since this was deciding the event distribution for a Pokemon movie. Pokemon that have a major presence in the anime (such as a Pokemon owned by Ash or one of his friends) usually did very well in the competition since voting audience were generally heavy followers of the anime.
