Vote totals for the top 30 Pokemon for each generation:

None of the Gen 1 starter middle evolutions got into the Top 30, but that was a highly competitive generation just to make Top 30. Charizard doesn't break 100000 votes as a result of the extreme competition near the top. Mew somehow manages to beat out Mewtwo, which I totally didn't expect. Squirtle was the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen I Pokemon, but it finishes 13th here.

Houndoom, the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen II Pokemon, only gets 20th for this generation. The difference between Lugia and Ho-Oh is the largest difference between the 2 main boxart legendaries for any generation. Lugia comes fairly close to tripling Ho-Oh in raw votes.

Gen 3 had the closest race for the number one spot, with less than 400 votes separating Rayquaza and Gardevoir. Latias ends up being more popular than Latios. In a rather unusual result, Aron ends up beating Aggron by more than 6000 votes.

Piplup > Empoleon for Gen 4 (Bane would totally like this result). Leafeon getting more votes than Vaporeon is clearly the biggest sign of Gen 1's stacked competition at the top.

Galvantula, the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen V Pokemon, fails to appear in the Top 30 for this generation. Joltik does make the Top 30, appearing at 27th.

Pangoro, the winner of Board 8 Ranks the Gen VI Pokemon, only gets 26th for this generation. Diancie at 16th place was better than I expected from it. Goomy also failed to finish higher than Goodra, maybe a sign of the Goomy memes dying off? (plus Gen 6 being at least 6 years old now)

Rowlet and Decidueye finishing 2nd and 3rd for this generation was a huge surprise because of the voting format. There should be a good deal of overlap between Rowlet and Decidueye in terms of people who like both of them, but could only vote for one of them per day. That's probably the only reason Mimikyu won this generation so easily. All of the starter final evolutions made the Top 10, even Primarina who is the least popular of the 3. Buzzwole is the only Ultra Beast to make the Top 30. Tapu Koko is the only Tapu to make the Top 30.

Snom may have pulled off an impressive 4th place this generation while breaking 38000 votes, but I think this result is fueled by rallies due to Gen 8 being so recent. This meant Snom could easily capitalize on the memes while they are most relevant. It would be interesting to see what happens to Snom in the future if we ever get more Pokemon of the Year competitions. Even though there's a large difference between Zacian and Zamazenta (slightly above a doubling), it's still not as huge as the beating that Lugia put on Ho-Oh for Gen 2. Although Hatterene only finished 13th here, it has potential to grow its popularity even more due to the Gardevoir comparisons. Plus Gardevoir had over 17 years to accumulate the popularity it has today. Also, Appletun > Flapple, like it should be.
