American celebrity Hilary Duff enlisted her 15 million Instagram followers to shame a photographer this past weekend. His offense? Practicing his photography by shooting a kids soccer game at a public park.

It all started this past Saturday after the star noticed a man photographing her 7-year-old sons soccer game. She turned on her smartphone camera, marched over to the man, and confronted him about what he was doing.

Who are you here with? Duff asks the man, who is seen holding a Nikon Z Series mirrorless camera and telephoto lens.
Im here with me, the man replies.
Do you know any of the people on the team? No? Can you stop taking pictures of the kids please?

Its legal, the man counters, offering to show ID. Im taking pictures. Im practicing photography. Im not here to scare you or anything like that. Your paranoia is unwarranted.
Its just an uncomfortability factor that these are 7-year-old children and you dont have a child here, Duff says.
Whats that got to do with anything? the photographer asks.
Well, there are children and we would like to protect them, Duff says. So if you could take pictures and practice your photography somewhere else
Me taking pictures of them is not What about other people? the man asks.
Okay, then I will just post this to my 15 million followers on Instagram and let people know how creepy it is that this is what youre choosing to do on your Saturday morning, Duff says.
The 32-year-old Duff ended up calling police to report the man and was disappointed to learn that they wouldnt do anything about him.

T]he police were, you know, pretty dismissive of me, saying, What do you want us to do? Youre at a public park,' Duff states in a followup Instagram Story posted yesterday. Well yeah, Im at a public park, Im at a place where kids play and kids should be safe here.
Its just extremely strange and inappropriate and creepy to have a man photographing our 7-year-old children and that to be completely legal.
Duff says she would like laws in the US changed to allow parents to stop photographers shooting in public places.
Like, if a parent is asking for it to stop, the laws should be changed for you to not be able to photograph that person, she states. If those kids are a subject of your photography practice, over and over and over again for minutes or half-hour, however long it was, and you ask someone to please stop that, you should have that right. And we really need to work on changing that law.

Taking pictures of people in public is completely legal. Reporters, etc do it all the time without having to ask for permission. I know plenty of photographers who 'practice' at sporting events, especially free attendance ones.

yea but to be fair, her saying "we'll see what my 15 million instagram subscribers think!" is bringing attention to it...so she can't blame the paparazzi. she's the reason this is getting attention. Its one thing to confront him. its another to try and mobilize your social media followers against him when no one knows what his intentions there were.

I wasn't sure about this one.Taking pictures like that can be shady.However talking about leashing her followers on him is something I have to question.

My mother is a kids tennis coach and makes sure to get permission from every parent before taking so much as a group photo

I used to work at an out of school care... we could not take pictures without confirmation from parents, however, if someone took pictures and was not employed, that was okay.

I'm sure there are but maybe he just came across that one first and didn't think much of it, getting defensive after being approached with a camera in his face? Its all entirely possible. She didn't have to approach him with her phone in hand instantly assuming he's up to no good with "who are you here with!? We'll see what my instagram subscribers think!"...I don't think that's fair to him. Inversely, he could have handled it better as well, but i don't necessarily blame him when she started the entire thing in a confrontational way, automatically assuming he's some kind of pervert. I'm sure you'd immediately get somewhat defensive with those implications too.

Why do people get so defensive about their pictures being taken in public what is the big deal and why do they care. People love to post pictures of themselves on facebook and instagram for the whole world to see but if some one takes your picture in public all of a sudden it is the end of the world.

i'd rather strangers also didn't have pictures of my kids for [insert reason here regardless of reason]
